OK Dodger, I will go. After a few beers the danger goes away anyway !

Where do you suggest to start the night? noodle bar then beer bar. what days are the markets on? Any places for about 1000 - 1500 that dont charge joiner fee. I will be there on 22nd April. After going to Patong (2 nights) and Kata. Would want to stay for two nights.

Gee, I understand that some of the comments are tongue in cheek and all, but there seems to be a sense that Kamala is some kind of crime infested dump.

I’d choose it over any other parts of the island that I’ve lived, and after more than four years here I have no intentions whatsoever of moving. And it certainly is no less safe than say Kata or Patong. It offers a more relaxed atmosphere, good eateries, nice beach, good range of hotels / guest houses and only a short hop from Patong. And as Dodger says, more than enough bars and the quality of the girls beats Kata / Karon heads down.

Not that I really care (much), but it would be a damn shame if someone did not consider moving / holidaying here due to misconceptions spread through this forum.

Walker: A great hotel is the Siam Guest House. I think their prices are around 1500 BHT in late April. No pool, but practically on the beach. A number of decent guesthouses on the main road as well. A good place to start the evening is the Beer Garden. Markets on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Enjoy.

Another one Walker, would be Papa Crabs Guesthouse, 1000bht per night high season, 500 bht low, 1 minutes walk to the beach and views from the room.

Agree with Sundance, good venue for the start of the night in Beergarden, you'd have to walk passed 20 bars to get there (Koi's, Long Maa Doo, Little Aussie Bar, Corner Bar some of the better ones) so would have a good idea on the way back. Vienna Bar, Apple Tree, Gecko's Dive Inn, all on the high street, good options. The pub is opening on the 16th with live bands on weekends, looks upmarket and should do well, then save yourself for 1 - 2am pop up to the Chang Nightclub.

Feck too many to list them all, ask around in the first bar you stop in, locals are friendly, you could be unlucky and bump in to us!!!!

I thank you for your spirited defence of La La Land.As you well know I sometimes sneak over there for a drink or two and have friends living there.

Dodger sometimes you are too easy to bait.

Walker - both Dodger and Sundance have given you helpful steers. The other stuff is our merry banter.

Saint B and Count D may be spotted - most likely at KBG (the bar not the bike gang). KBG is also popular with the Kamala Hasher's so you might want to bear that in mind. I did highlight personal enjoyable spots - hope you dont mind Dodge and note that I didnt get lippy like these other non-Lalalalalaians!

Funny no-one has mentioned that Kamala has its own Hash (Kamala Koma HHH) headquartered at Bann Rim Klong (good for Sunday roasts).

This sounds worth investigating ...

I've never lived there. But I'm reliably told that bullet proof vests are in order when riding over the hill ...

Thanks for the advice D...

Dodger/Sundancekid Thanks for the info. Will book one of them.

dennisinkamala quoted "What no one has told the OP is that Kamla is... erm.. well there is..."

Kamala is actually an ok place with plenty to see and do, Dodg is correct.
Unfortunately I cannot give specifics as I am the original social leper in la la land, I never go out and nobody invites me to.
S'pose it would be the same wherever I live. Consiering Mission Hills, at least can be crap at golf near home and maybe even get a game with someone else.
Who knows.

Anyway, try Kamala, you wont be dissapointed, unless you run into Crusty.

Good choice of hotels either which one you go for. I’ve stayed in both (as have friends), and they are very good value for money. Personally I would choose Siam due to the view and the (huge!) size of the rooms. If you can afford the extra baht that is.

Do not pay much attention to the Kathu crowd though. Try spending one night at the Kathu Hilton and you’ll see what I mean…

Oh, I am “reliably told” that the Tuk Tuks in Kalama are all bullet proof and up-armored these days, so you should be perfectly safe from the illustrious bike gang. They even have kevlars stacked beneath the seats, and quite cute attendants (with a full set of teeth) showing you how to put them on and pointing out the emergency exits upon departure. So… not to worry.

We are doing Airport runs at a reasonable 500 Baht (One-Way) If you survive your time in Kamala.........We take you back for free! B-6 Armour, Run Flats and a welcome drink. Yep, we check our attendants teeth daily.

I used to charge 6K USD for this in Iraq (Airport to Hotel) Same offer, survive - Airport for nothin'..........So this is a bloody bargain.

The broken glass was a pot hole in Surin. Nothing to worry about, you'll be fine.................Just let us know what size body armour I need to bring for the wife and kids.

We all seem to be forgeting the benevolent side of Kamala!!!
Like the "Tuna Preservation Society", whose avowed aim seems to be protecting all the world's Tuna fish from harm!!!
They have even been known to hire a boat to take them out so that they can feed their little darlings!!!

P.S. Their members have also been rumoured to hug a tree on occassion, but only late at night and after one of Dodgy's Tours
