This is when I know I am in Thailand and not just in another tourist country. I have been over there 5 times now and try something different every time. places, food, etc. Daytime is for learning about places and meeting people, night time is for eating drinking and making merry. There is no other place I have been to that is like the place. But, as i know someone will say, It has its bad parts, just like any other. It's not just because I am on holiday that I like it so much. People that I have met are welcoming and the food is one of the best in the world. 28 days 32 hours to go, but i'm not counting!

What I start to dislike about Phuket is that it's turning more and more into a charter-destination. It's like the new Madeira where everything is set up against tourists.......The good thing is that you can still easy escape by going away from the beaches against Phuket Town..........Many nice thai-restaurants where you will be the only farang, but still be treated like a local.
Hope to see you around in a few weeks time..................

I spent about ten minutes in Patong today, paying my CAT Telecom bill. They had all the drains up on Rat-U-Thingie Road and some poor blokes in the hole wearing paper masks, scraping the proverbial off the walls down there.
Jeeez, I know it needs it, lack of rain and all that, but the stench!
Still people sat in restaurants having a sandwich while they watched.
What did you do on Holiday Dad?
At least Kamala is a wee bit fresher than that and a nice breeze down here at the Club from the sea and the 'clank, clank, clank' of the MIBs on thier outdoor multi-gym at the police station. I may have to pop round there and have a word or start singing John Denver songs to them.

I have just got back from a quick 8 day trip and one of the things I set out to achieve this time was to research other areas to stay apart from Patong. Kamala was high on the list due to its proximity to Patong but not being right in it so to speak.
I gotta say I thought Kamala was a pretty good place. Sure the beach is just ok by world standards but compared to the sh*thole that is Patong beach it is 5 star. As someone mentioned before there are enough entertainment venues and resturants to keep you occupied and there is a decent amount of talent about if you look hard enough. It is a lot more "laid back" than Patong and I personally found it less "commercialised" than Kata and Karon, and certainly there are a hell of a lot less of the "package tourist families" swanning about during the day with the kids asking their parents about why that young lady looks so happy holding her grandpas hand. Also once you get back off the beachfront and into the town itself you can find the full range of stuff that you will find in any normal thai town.
The best thing is that it is only a 20 minute ride by bike over the hill and you are into Pootong. And to be honest the only real reason I would go to Pootong is to party and pick up my root de juer, other than that it is just a dirty tourist infested sh*thole with about as much charm as a festering boil in the sun.
My plan now is to ensconce myself in Kamala for a short time during the wet season as it is central to where I will be roaming daily which is the beaches on the north of the Island. I will pick up a couple of takeaways from Pootong and enconse them in my digs for the duration if there is no talent worthy of my sad middle aged body to be found in Kamala during that time of the year.
I guess I am just a country boy at heart....

Passed through Kamala many times but never actually stopped by for a beer. Anyway on Monday we went for a late afternoon spin on the Harleys and ended up at the 1st bar into Kamala on left, can't remember name but has big Harley D sign outside.
Most of the women were friendly enough but the majority looked like they've been round the block a few times and it reminded me of a Bangla Rd retirement home.....
After that we went to a bar 150yds up opposite siam com bank, again cant remember name but about 2 of 3 bars together. What a breath of fresh air the girls were much younger and fresher looking. I went to the toilet and almost knocked myself out on the spiral staircase, minimally protected with pipe lagging or some kind of 5mm foam. I'm sure that has caused some accidents over the years!! Had a few games of pool with the girls and generally had an enjoyable time. We were happy to buy some lady drinks as none of them asked and pestered for them.
Could have stayed all evening as it was a nice change but had to get the bikes home. Enjoyed Kamala though but i'm sure there is so much more to see than the 2 bars we went !!! Will come again soon and try some more...

Last pic was taken with a zoom so partly explains the poorer quality. Plus I like to just point & click

Thanks for the photos HF.
In the last one, I saw that development from a longtail and couldn't figure out how you got to those houses - a hidden escalator? 555
Can one of the esteemed Lalalian D's perhaps enlighten me?

Is there anywhere in Kamala that offers a good massage, with (you know) extras?
I'd be interested in any "detailed information", especially about any happy endings.

If you want to ride a Harley in Phuket they can be rented from Nicky's Handlebar in Patong. Didn't rent one myself but spoke to some Aussies that did, & I think they said it was 7,500 baht (plus hand over passport) for a full days escorted tour including food (I think).
Anyway, I can recommend the food there & found the bar to have a pretty good atmosphere as early as 6pm. Even heard Nicky give a pretty good speech in relation to the alcohol ban.

4x4 with a good handbrake, local bus not recommended. Chuffing steep climb but the concrete lorries seem to make it! I can see it from my front door and just waiting for them to slide down the side into the sea.

MWM mentioned 'Mountain View Bar' - It appears to be Harley or biker 'orientated' and where lots of the local biker types hang out. (Not the KBG, that's the noodle stall by the 3rd 7-11) Good place to pop in for a cold one and have a chat with the leather clad chaps in............chaps!! I don't recommend the carpark for falling asleep under your bike though. Bit lumpy.
I was in there last night and molested by a drunken lady boy in the toilets - cost 100 baht mind!
The bike shop (Thai owned) just past Mountain View has loads of custom (Harleys included) for sale, I can ask them about rentals. They did a good respray on my leaking flattner tank and are currently looking around for a price on a new rear tyre for me. They said they can source and move bikes from all over! (Take that how you want!!!) They recently brought down three 2nd hand big 1200 and 1600cc BMW tourers from BKK with lots of headlights and knobbly bits that Ewan McGregor likes!
Apple Tree bar is owned by two Canadian big bike enthusiasts and I have been in there when the bikers pop in for a cold one on thier travels. MWM might even have been one of them!
Whoa! All this in Kamalalala and Mosques too!
