They rely on the fact that you'll be leaving town pretty soon.

They didn't count on me coming back for an exchange/refund the next night.

I had two exchanges over two days and they all turned out to be duds.

The watch appears to run just fine, but then you realize it loses time.

Battery models were cheaper because they were slimmer and not an authentic copy.

The wind up models were very close in size and looks to the originals but don't keep time.

So basically buying a fake watch in LOS is like taking a BG back to hotel, you have to take a test drive until you know if it's worth the money you spent...

Not really brought back (well sort of), but this Norwegian guy I met at a bar had just gotten the logo of his favorite football team tattooed on his forearm. He was nearly in tears when I pointed out that the name had been spelled incorrectly. Classic.

I'm a watch guy. I've got about 30 of them sitting in a case. Many of them were purchased in LOS. Got a few Rolexes but I go for the more exotic like Panerai and Piguet. My favorite is an Aluminum watch I buy in Patong that's battery with a Breitling face. Breitling doesn't make a watch like this so its a fake of a model that doesn't exist, making it somewhat of a unique watch. An aluminum watch is a feather weight compared to a big Breitling. I have 4 of them with different colored faces.

If you can get to a reputable watch guy, you can usually get a nice watch. There is a watch shop right at the entrance to Soi Eric where I bought a couple on my last trip from. You can buy an 800 baht Rolex or a 3500 baht Rolex from here and the guy will tell you the difference. Often I will buy a good battery watch because I have better luck with them. The movement is usually Japanese. Generally, you can pick up a nice watch for 1500 baht. Try a couple of different places to get a feel for where the price is if you find one you like. Don't buy an 800 baht Rolex.

The 3 things that spring to mind are the following:

1, Fake Rolex in Phuket, needed a watch so bought this one, one day later while walking through the airport i heard something hit the floor, looked round to see my new Rolex submariner with date, on the deck with broken strap.

I have a fake submariner - its been working since 2004... I dunno, perhaps its magic!!

I was comparing it with another BM's, real submariner last time down.. Wasnt alot of difference lookwise, my glass has a magnifying glass thing for the dates and the real one didnt. Regardless, he wouldnt trade with me

excited to buy some decent ball point pens...found 'pilot' pens at lotus.....bought 20 odd of them.....at 5 times the price of the cheapo ones they had.......not one of the 'pilot' pens worked at all....

an inflatable pool thing for kids to sit in...which is designed to flip over the second the kid is in it trapping them upside down under the water.

shorts that fell apart in the first wash.

togs with stitching that disolved.....in the wash not the pool thankfully.

some office chairs that fell apart first week.

buying 'chocolate' that is actually 'chocolate flavoured confectionary'

thai whiskey

bought a fair bit of software and only a small number dont work - but at about $3 a pop who's worried, loads of Concert DVD's that all work..???
Plenty of t-shirts that actually have retained their shape and size but only wash in COLD water.
I bought a couple of watches that fell to pieces in a couple of days but bought the g/f one and it still goes after 18 months.....?????? - could never understand that.......5555555555 - maybe the ones I bought for me were special "farang" ones.....!!!!!!!!

That'll teach us

Ever the business men a few years ago me and a friend bought 200 England shirts from the stall in Bangla on left as you go down. Done deal so we thought and off we went to the Dusit Laguna. Guy was really helpful and delivered the goods. Smelling a handsome profit on return to England off we went in glee with the knowledge we had the best shirts available even with the England hologram. Got to Bangers and was told we both had excess baggage and would be extra £220 each. So we paid the money still happy in the knowledge that the holiday should be paid for in full. Shortly after arriving back in UK there was a big footy game with England on. We set up shop in the local pub and started to sell our wares. Things were going great until some smart **** noticed the hologram spelt Endlang not England. Word got around and refunds became plentiful. We became the lauging stock. Not long after that the strip changed so I am now selling personalised polishing cloths if anyone is interested. Great if you are a Brit.

Was drunk one nite and exited a soi of bars somewhere in patong. Saw the 'scary movie' mask and thought it would be so damn cool to own one. Haggled and got it 20B cheaper than she asked for it so I felt please with myself.

I then shoved it into my pocket and has never worn it or even taken it out since then! That was about 4 years ago!
