Antibiotics Question

Went and got all my vaccinations for my trip (leaving mar 26) The doctor also prescribed me Zithromax for severe TD. Did anyone else get this and use it? I haven't filled the prescription yet.

Been reading up on it and it seems like it is highly recommended to have it with you according to a few websites.

Unless you already have a severe condition I don't think that is necessary. Just be smart and read up on how to be carefule with water, ice and foods. I've never had a serious problem with the food.

Roger that, I would say leave the prescription on that personally. If you do get the TD's while you are here, either, drink lots of water and flush out your system and let nature take it's course! Literally, over a day or so!

If you do have something important to deal with and need to dry it up a bit! Then you can buy (Very cheaply) some Imodium from the Pharmacies here in Phuket to bung you up a bit. Personally I don't like that because all it does is 'hold in' the bug that is giving you the problem in the first place! Up to you as they say.

Use bottled water for drinking, brushing your teeth (I use tap water for that and no problem) and most bars use bottled water ice in your drinks anyway.

WTTB and enjoy your trip.

My Doc suggested I carry some imodium with me, just in case it was required for the flight home & to avoid looking all furtive when lined up in customs. Though I suppose that if customs think your behaviour makes you look suspicious & they want to do an internal, then I guess the mess could be on their hands - literally
That said I've had 2 trips & no probs. When buying water I was told to make sure the seal wasn't already broken, as this could suggest the bottle has been refilled with tap water

I think he is talking about STD not TD

Ziromax is an antibiotic specifically aimed at treating STD thta you have picked up from a lady etc

if your have immodium problems then they can not be cured bu Antibiotic etc

Regards

Drew

The thread started as an antibiotic question but seems to be more about vaccinations.
Firstly, never had an vaccinations to go to Phuket. Not exactly like heading into a jungle any more. To me its like heading to the Gold Coast in Queensland AUS. Hot tourist location with a beach and a landscape of high rise resorts. so the chances of catching some exotic disease in Patong in my opinion is unlikely.

As far as antibiotics. Last year I had a tooth filling a few days before heading to LOS. On arrival I had developed an infection in the gum. I went straight to the first pharmacy ask for something for an infection. They gave me amoxycillin (not sure of spelling) no prescription required and very cheap.

I think in general it is not necessary to get vaccines before traveling to Thailand.
When I had my last physical I mention my Asian travel to my doctor and he said that if I travel much outside of the cities and tourist destinations .... then yes. He did say that I should make sure my tetanus shots up-to-date, but that would be true even at home. To be on the cautious side or if I were to venture more about, the hepatitis should be considered.

I read in the Gazette that it is now mandatory to micro-chip "farang women" on entering Phuket. Failure to comply will result in a 10,000 Baht fine.....

I would NOT take Zithromax for travelers diarrhea!
You need water, sugar and salt. (Coke and chips)
It's not recommended to give anitbiotics for diarrhea. (Basicly you kill the normal bactira in your colon as well as the harmfull. It might prolong your recovery and give you cronicol problems.
Let your body fluss it out. (With bloody diarrhea you should see a doctor.)
Zithromax is standard treatment for Chlamydia (STD) in Norway. (But can be used for tonsillites and more)
If you have no fever and its gone a couple of days, you can try Imodium, but remember, it only slows your colon down, it does not treat the infeksjon.
Amoxycillin should take care of anyting with your airways.

For vacsine I have taken Hepatitt A wich can ruin your hollyday (fecal - oral cotamination.
(I have vacsine for B, and it isn't so nessesary anyway (you get it mainly from blood))
Then I would refresh (every 10 year) trippelshot of tetanus, difteri and one more (I dont remember)

I remember on of my dad favorite jokes back in the 70's when microprocessors were just starting to get 'small".

One day microprocessors will become so small and so powerful that they could be implanted in the brain.
The major benefit will be that someday you will be able to have a normal conversation with them.

..... since we aren't there yet, I guess the statement still stands.

It appears to me its the lovely thai girl friends that should be micro chipped. How many time has a ever faithful white bloke gone home to earn money to support his thai girl firend and her family only to hear/find out that she has wandered back to the bar scene and most probably got 2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/+ suckers supporting her believing she is as faithful as a white girl.

To me if there is any micr-chipping to be done I really wouldnt mind Jacque Cousteau micro chiping just one thai girl and im sure there will be plenty of migrating and advanture to produce a high quality documentary he is famous for.
