Food????

Not sure if there is a thread already on the food in Patong but gonna ask anyways..

Where are the best places to get Seafood? I have heard of the 3lb phuket lobster... Is it really that great??looking forward to trying that..

and what about the street vendors? are they safe to eat? obviously everyones immune system is different but any bad incidents happen..will I be able to get Western food....i heard the banana pancakes are soooo good...

should i take alot of imodium??

please do tell.when i was studying in china almost 9 years ago, i lost almost 10 lbs from the food..well, i thnk it was the food..want to avoid that as china was not the most sanitary place..but the food was so good...

Hi Cali,

You will find some god seafood restaurants on the Beach Road but there are a lot everywhere.

I used to buy some food on the street after the discos or the bars closed and I never have had a problem, but I have always imodium on me bacause I like to eat very spicy, so sometimes I was happy to have it under the hand.

Thailand is the most wonderful country for food in my opinion and it is one of the reasons why I like LOS so much.

you are much more likely to need the imodium from eating western food than Thai as it is often less well cooked.

Was that Wattana clinic ? nice place with good staff , got some of the blue diamonds from there once and the doc was very informative about how the pills work.
Also had a few injections in my ass there too

make sure you avoid the water from the tap /faucett cali , dont even brush your teeth with it ,some hotels allow you some free bottled water but nothings for free ,i avoid it ,i think it was this that made me ill last time!better to pay for water ,then u know its ok.also salad is sometimes washed in polluted water ,theres no guarantee ! the thai water system works on low pressure ,so the water supply is "sucked from the main pipes by pumps-- rather than the opposite,if there is a leak in the system, any polluted water that surrounds the pipe where the leak is,-is sucked into the system via the damaged hole in the pipe thus causing what was clean water to become poisonous to drink

You dont need to worry , patong is absolutely littered with pharamcies everywhere you go , Bangla rd & soi sai nam yen both have plenty , you can buy anything you need from these place.
You can even buy penicillin over the counter in thai pharmacies which is something you cannot do in my country (england)

what about the ice in mixed drinks? Always wonder about that. Prob going to stick to beer and shots..

Is it smart to buy a case of bottled water as soon as I get there? and use that for brushing my teeth

Nearly every bar serves the moulded ice, with the hole in the middle. These are made from clean filtered water, and are fine for consumption.

I havn't seen it used in bars for sometime, but then again I don't get around to other bars that often, but shaved ice used to be widely used. This is ice shaved off a large block, and you bet that this is not made from good water.

There was another thread recently about the water in Patong, which eventually had some good info in it. I suggest you do a search for that.

Basically as has been said, don't consume the tap water, if your guts aren't up to it. It wont kill you, but can make you pretty sick.

But then again, don't go around worrying yourself stupid about it.

It's not like Mexico

All the ice is delivered to each bar, they don't make their own to my knowledge. The ice is safe. The tap water although I don't drink it I use it to brush my teeth. Although my body system is probably used to it I would use bottled water for teeth brushing if I were you. Any thing like the runs or the drips is easily cured very quickly by a visit to one of numerous pharmacies here. They are very good at prescribing medicine unlike from the states they work almost as a doc on the spot.

Don't worry, have fun!

Never, ever was sick in Los! But if you shit a lot, that can also come from the spicy food, you are not used too!

I eat everything evrywhere, except in touristic restaurant!

No worries Andy.

Just that I been to China and Taiwan few times and I got sick each time.

In Taiwan, I got sick from the 7-11 food.go figure!
In China, I got sick but I think it was cuz I actually saw how they washed their dished. They just rinsed them with water no soap...
It was my fault for eating there but just seemed so good.

So, bar owners, what are the beer glasses washed with? ;-)
I have always used tap water to clean my teeth and haven't had a problem and the best bit of advice is to just be slightly wary but don't ruin your stay by worrying unduly about it.

It's all a matter of concentration. The human body is able to mobilize it's natural defenses when bacteria is introduced into the body. Small amounts of bacteria (usually e-coli) are engulfed and pass right on through. Residual tap water in a washed beer glass or a teaspoon consumed while brushing teeth present little problem for a healthy person. Gulping a glass of foul tap water in the middle of the night is a different story. Additionally, water does not allow bacteria to colonize (nothing to feed off of), so unless you run across some exceptionally bad stuff, you have little to worry about.
I think conventional wisdom leads people to believe that it was water that made them sick, when actually it was more likely something they ate. Bacteria can multiply at an astronomical rate given the right medium. A warm pan sitting around for 5 or 6 hours is quite conducive to bacteria growth. Couple that with the overpowering nature of Thai food, spicy, often salty and sour, (Curry came about long before the invention of the refrigerator to disguise the taste of spoilt foods) and the unsuspecting Farang ingests a meal of healthy bacteria in the prime of their short lives, hell bent on reproducing with abandon anywhere in a warm digestive tract.
The onset of symptoms can be abrupt. Eat a meal at 0200, back to the hotel, sleep, then up at 0500 for an urgent visit to the loo. The body mobilizes it's defenses, but cannot cope with the invasion. Fever begins. Too weak to even leave the bathroom you embrace the cool porcelain until the wretching subsides. Forget about going to a pharmacy for medication, you cannot even stand up-right...besides, nothing will stay down. Eventually, your body purges the bacteria from both ends, and regains control. You'll feel better within 18 hours. At this point you'll desperately crave some kind of electrolyte solution. The thought of beer makes you gag. Bet you wish you had some gatorade in your mini-bar!

Sorry, I got carried away. My point: Prepare for the worst, but don't let it consume your holiday. Be reasonable about where you eat. I've had some great meals from street vendors, but also got the above malady from street food. If you aren't "local", don't eat like you have been living in Thailand your whole life. Have some familiar medication with you (if you need it, you'll be glad you have it), and ALWAYS keep, at the very least, a few litres of bottled water in your mini bar. At least this way if intestinal disaster strikes, you'll be prepared.
