Death Toll could be OVER 100,000
FT.com / In depth - Burma death toll could exceed 100,000
And it is only going to get worse unless aid gets in there now. There is no two ways against it. This is a crime against humanity in progress.
I really think the Security Council needs to pass a resolution today and they need to just get in there and help the 1,000,000 without shelter, food or water.
Otherwise the UN is just proving it is a useless shame puppet organization.

It won't be the first time.
I think Burma IS taking the "aid", it's just that they don't necessarily want the foreign "aid people" and journalists along with it...

Too a very limited degree yes, but
1) donors have no confidence that burma can deal with a disaster of this magnitude alone. Any country would be very challenged.
2) even if the Burmese government could deal with the disaster, there is great concern the supplies won't get to those who need it. You don't want this stuff ending up on the black market.
Those 3 Burmese don't get to decide the immediate death of tens of thousands of more people. Concern for territorial boundaries in this extreme situation is unreasonable. This is why the UN can supercedethose boundaries under international law.

True, I guess I should have said the gov't WANTS the "aid" (supplies, food, medicine, shelter materials, etc), but not the help distributing and/or delivering it to the end users. It's weird.. they ask for the aid (which is a minor miracle in itself), and then drag their feet when it comes to accepting it...

Been searching to see when Thailand was last hit by something similar. Looks like it was Typhoon Gay, a tropical cyclone which caused significant damage in province Chumphon of Thailand in 1989.
During the landfall in Thailand, Gay claimed at least 458 lives, also more than 600 fishermen were reported missing. Two hundred fishing vessels were lost and major damage was done to the coral reefs.

Dodger told me it was a Burmese general who owned it as we were there. Made me feel guilty for supporting them right away.

Thats why the protests last year were so tense (and hopeful) as they are probably the only thing that people could rally to. Also the troops would have additional moral issues about firing on Monks.
Even then it is simply very tough.. The military keep an iron grip on everything.

They can be effective too. They were instrumental in bringing down the Diem regime in Vietnam during the 1960's

Reports of senior monks floating down rivers after the last "peaceful protest". At what point do you slip into the "subhuman" catergory ???

We debate the human cost whilst Bejing debates its econonic future. The powers controlling this crisis have shown themselves for what they are. Monsters.

Get on with it
Is there any evidence that the military junta ruling Mayanmar care about the non military population of their country? Do they care if 100,000 of their people may have have died? They do however care/fear other powerful countries using aid as a pretext to 'take over' the country.
Perhaps the best solution is to use countries 'friendly' to Mayanmar as conduits for delivering aid to the stricken people; such as Indonesia and China.
Alternatively just load up some f8cking big planes with supplies and drop the supplies to people in the Irriwaddy Delta without permission from the Junta. Certain countries drop bombs on other countries without 'permission' so dropping food, water, medicines and tents doesn't seem like a crime to me.

Same as it otherwise would have been. Hot, humid and expect a fair amount of rain.

No evidence whatsover. They care as much as the US elite did about their ordinary people when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.

You raise an interesting point here... and one I agree with. However, it may not have been from a lack of caring, but more from a lack of really knowing what the feck to do.... Same same Burma maybe??

I read in Norwegian news today that the junta is exporting rice to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, I can understand why the junta want take care of the food UN is sending, more food to export.

Official estimates of loss of life keep growing.
Officially 77,000.
Maybe as many as 200,000 after diahorea and cholera set in.
No end in sight to the rain as well, hampering efforts to get aid to more remote areas.
Airasia are organising flights with aid for anyone in LOS interested.
