Looks like Myanmar is getting it now. Hope the fishermen got warning of this the boats they use in Myanmar won't stand up to any sort of weather.

Crikey that doesn't look that far away from us.

Denver if you still got your washing out maybe time to bring the larger sheets in, unless you feel like relocating further up the hills with us!!!

Yes it's called Earthdesk you can find it here. I have it centred on Phuket and zoomed in to the max but you can choose any city worldwide or show the whole world with night and day. It downloads satellite information and projects it on the map makes it interesting to follow big storms.

The newspapers reported 4 dead in Rangoon, and the rest out by the river delta...

They say now that on the island of Haing-gyi they have found 109 bodys, and still counting... 20 000 buildings destroyed and 90 000 homeless..

A taxidriver asked where all the guys in uniform was now, since they where so fast at show up and beat people before, but now they are gone...

Hey Soupy, have you got yer head in the way of the projector or is it yer thamb on the screen? 55555
Yes, a noth swell and quite large 2 days back, funnily enough it didnt get into Layan (nth Bang tao near the island) at all...in fact it seems biggest in the centre of all the beaches when i would have predicted the south ends to be maxing out and the north ends cleanest.
Big rain here at Lala today....

Thats crazy numbers, basic shacks for living is not strong but how about normal houses? Would e.g. Phuket have such big problems with a cyclone like this?

Seems it was pretty deadly with winds of upto 190km/hour ripping thru the remote and rural countryside................even more developed places like Phuket would have taken a pounding I guess.....

Interesting question, Nicke. Personally, I don't think that Phuket has much to worry from a cyclone. Due to its latituce the cyclone strebdth wont be as great as some degrees further north; however, two issues which bear consideration:- firstly rainfall, cyclones tend to dump huge amounts of water, and this can lead to landslides and flooding, and more importantly is the storm surge. Its not a tsunami, but cyclones can develop huge rises in the level of the sea. It is more gradual than a tsunami, and evacuation is easier because of the amount of time available. One of the advantages Phuket should have is the government and infrastructure is controlled away from the coast, so even if Patong Beach is devastated it should still be possible to develop a rescue plan. If you look at places like Queensland, the state is controlled right on the coastline in cities like Cairns - these are the ones most likely to be affected.
