Hi SuRFeRGiRL ,

Me are not a snorkeling expert , but i think "paradise beach" can be wery good for snorkeling just around Patong ....or just rent a longtail boat for some ours ...
But i´m sure you soon gonna have some proposal from outher bm
in all differnet ways ....

But if you go out to Phi Phi island you should definitely take a contrated tour
around the island , i have done that before and its wery good and cheap !!
You will not be disappointed .

Hi surfergirl,

The north end of Kata beach has a reef that extends for maybe 100 metres and is only a short swim from shore.

I snorkelled it nearly every day for a month in July and found it great - but very changable. Some days had surfable waves that made swimming hard and some days had very poor visibility (maybe 1.5 metres).

If you go around Christmas time I have heard that the sea is very calm and visibility is great there.

On its best days it was fantastic with an amazing variety of fish. The coral is badly damaged though but recovering - probably from dynamite fishing...

if you can scuba dive ,then it is well worth taking a dive trip to similian islands, you all sorts of sea life sharks etc and if your really lucky you can see turtles, manta rays and it has been reported rare sightings of whale sharks.
the trips are to be honest very cheap in terms of diving trips, if i remember right a night on a life aboard which gives you 7 dives including a night dive came to about 9000bht which when you consider it includes your meals aswell ,cylinders and weight is very good, compared to else where in the world.
