Great free online book by Stephen Leather

Hey everyone. I was looking for some information about the Bangkok scene and found this book online. It is a great read if you have some time and want to read about the all too familiar "I fell in love with my Thai-girl" catastrophe. Check it out at the following site. It's called "Private Dancer". Warning...you won't be able to stop reading it...it is really fascinating.

i thought it was pretty good. the funny thing is that i printed it out in the middle of my work day and it took about 15 minutes for all the pages to print. i was praying that no one would need the printer!

What did you think?

What was the general perception of the book? I really liked the writing style..flashing back and forth between characters, getting the different points of view of each situation, and the description of the NEP area reminded me of my time there last spring. Does anyone know if "Fatso's" really exists? According to the book it should be about a 5 minute walk from the Dynasty. I will be in Bangkok at Christmas and would love to visit it if it does! The "long glass" challenge seems like it would be pretty funny to watch. If anyone who has read the book cares to make a quick comment it would be interesting for me to see how others felt about it. Luckily many of the problems faced by the main character Pete will never happen to those board members who actually research the scene before going to the land of sin err I mean smiles!

I read private dancer in May on the plane from Amsterdam..It was absolutely riveting and I could not put it down.....kept everybody awake by keeping the light on. After reading it I did have a more negative and hardened view on how it works in Thailand. I would recommend reading it after you have been in Los for a while so that you get some of that initial "died and gone to heaven" euphoria in the first few days.

PATPONG Sisters, it's a great book althought it is 10 years old. The best book of the bar scene I have read. (It is about Patpong in Bangkok, not Patong in Phuket)

The author is a hippie and live a happy life in Goa/India these days I have heard.

Hm, I looked her old website now but nothing had changed, it is still from Goa beginning of 2000. I found another webpage that claimed she died 26 March 2001, this because lot of people tried to contact her but she never answered her emails.

But her book Patpong Sisters is a great book, a highly recommended book for all newbies.

I read The Basement from the same author a few months ago. It has nothing to do with Thailand but it was a good novel too. I really enjoyed it!

Can't wait to read more!

This book has really made me thirsty for more interesting reads. Thanks for dropping the names of the other books...I will definitely check them out. To answer Marc's question I think the author you were speaking of is Christopher G. Moore. Apparantly he is the one who originally labeled the Thermae coffee house in Bangkok "The bar from the original Star Wars." Here is a link to a sample of his description of the old Thermae. I went to the new one last year and left after 5 minutes...wasn't my scene at all. But if I had a time machine I would love to visit the original!

Happy reading!

Robio

Before I ever thought of purchasing a computer, I read an excerpt from Private Dancer entitled "I love you too much" in a British magazine I picked up in Hong Kong in 1997. I was so enthralled as to what the outcome was, I wrote Stephen Leather (c/o the magazine) a letter asking him questions on the Thai bar scene and if he ever saw his girl again. 6 weeks later I received a personal reply along with a paperback he purchased for me entitled "Travels in the skin trade". It was pure, fact-based, non-fiction, no sh*t info on what makes Thai girls tick. I finally read Private Dancer on line in 2001. You are correct when you say it is impossibe to walk away from!
