One-2-Call

I use One-2-Call. Don't know about the texting to the UK, but it's probably similar to texting the USA. I've gotten a good, clean signal from both Bangkok & Phuket (also Pattaya). The operators speak English very well, but I had a friend set up the GPRS internet for me. You can do this yourself, if your Thai language skills are ok. SIM cards available in any mall or electronics store for about $20 US. "Balance Check" is one of the requester services available on the card. When your balance runs low, just buy a refill card from just about everywhere (7-Eleven, etc.). The refill cards are in Thai & may be a little tricky to use the first few times. Have a friend do it for you until you feel ok doing it yourself.

For text messages, I find it's a lot easier if you have the number you want to send a message to in your address book, than typing it in for each message. Messages are delivered immediately.

Calls within Thailand are 5 Baht / min. country-wide. I don't remember my Thailand-USA rates were, but I think they were around 15-20 Baht / min. These were the rates last time I was there (June 2004).

I have also a sim card from 1-2-call. I can call and send SMS all over Thailand and also to Germany and have no problems.
I can also recommend this card.

DTAC & One-2-Call! are the only one's that you can rely on, calling and sending SMS to all other cell-phone networks there in Thailand.
I found using other cards I could not call competing cell-networks card-users, or receive calls!
DTAC & One-2-Call! where a bit more expencive, but why have a cell-phone that can only call selected cell-phones?

I was in MBK in Bangkok the other day and my friend needed a Sim card. Went with 1-2-call. it was 199 baht with 50 baht credit. There are different prices for different phone numbers eg. 666-8888 is way more expensive than say 537-9426. There were some sim cards for as much as 17 000 baht for the best numbers. If you dont care what your number is go with the 199 baht ones.
