A bomb exploded at a beer bar in Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district last night killing a Malaysian tourist and critically injuring a passing Thai woman, local authorities said.
It went off about 7pm on Marina road, known locally as RCA Kolok, which is popular with Malaysian tourists. The critically injured woman was passing on her motorcycle, witnesses said.
About 20 other people were injured, around half of them Malaysian tourists.
Region 9 chief Pol Lt-Gen Manote Kraiwong later ordered all beer bars in the area to close down because there was no curfew in Sungai Kolok and the bars were open to attack.
Pol Lt-Gen Manote also said the bombing was meant to destroy the country's image and tourism industry.
A 10kg time bomb was discovered and defused in downtown Narathiwat yesterday morning, after Chaluay Chotikarn, 40, owner of a food shop near a school and a Buddhist temple on Wosbian road in Narathiwat's Muang district, became suspicious of an unattended paper bag.
A bomb squad's check revealed it contained a homemade bomb set to explode at 7.15am, when there would be many buying food at Ms Chaluay's shop, about 100m from Wat Prachapirom, to give to monks on their morning alms rounds.
Later in the day a retired police sergeant-major was wounded in Songkhla province. Sampan Fuang-raya, 57, was shot four times by a gunman on the back of a motorcycle.
