general info on drugs in LOS

A BRITISH man has been sentenced to death in Thailand and another jailed for more than 30 years on drugs charges, officials in London said today, adding that they would urge Bangkok not to carry out the execution.

Anthony Flannaghan, 34, received a death sentence today for possessing drugs with intent to sell them, while Stephen Wilcox, 39, was jailed for 33-and-a-half years for possessing drugs, the Foreign Office said.

Officials in London would lobby Thailand to spare Flannaghan's life, a Foreign Office spokeswoman told AFP.

"Our policy is to make representations on behalf of Britons facing the death penalty. We will be in contact with Mr Flannaghan's laywer to determine whatever the best time for this would be," she said.

Government officials were in touch with the Wilcox family in Britain, but Flannaghan had requested that none of his family be contacted, she added
The BBC News website said police raided the home of Wilcox on the Thai tourist island of Koh Samui and discovered 34 grams of heroin, 28g of marijuana, 14 ecstasy tablets and 11 tablets of methamphetamines.

Flannaghan was arrested and tried in Bangkok, with police alleging he had been paid by Wilcox to travel there from Koh Samui carrying the 1.3kg of heroin in his luggage.

Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has pursued a tough anti-drugs policy in recent months, one which has led to the death of many hundreds of Thai alleged drug offenders, bringing condemnation from rights groups.

Last month, New York-based Human Rights Watch said that between February and May, about 2275 suspected drug offenders were shot dead in "apparent extrajudicial executions".

i remember some years back,a scouse girl was arrested at the airport for carrying drugs in her suitcase, and sentenced to some ridiculous term in bkk Hilton, the weight of the drugs was ridiculous, and it was eventually proved that the case would have been so heavy that it would have been impossible for her to pick it up ,let alone carry it, turns out ,the powers that be, stuffed loads more drugs into the case than there was originally, ,as the bigger the stash the more they were awarded for a bust

While I would enjoy having a smoke of the pipe while in los, I wouldn't think about trying to find any....the penalties are too high....Now if someone is passing it around..well then so be it...

My motto is do what you want to do, but if you hurt someone while your doing it, then the penalties should be high!

AND YES JOHNNY THERE ARE A LOT OF STUPID FARANG OUT THERE!!

Thai death sentence for Briton

Wilcox and Flannaghan are receiving consular assistance
A Briton has been sentenced to death and another to 33 years in prison in Thailand over drugs charges.
Anthony Flannaghan, 33, of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, was convicted of possession of drugs with intent to sell and given the death penalty.

Stephen Wilcox, 39, of Blaby, Leicester, had his life term for possession reduced after a guilty plea.

Flannaghan had denied the charges, involving heroin, ecstasy, and amphetamine, and is planning to appeal.

During a raid at Wilcox' home on the island of Koh Samui, police found 1.2 ounces of heroin, one ounce of marijuana, 14 ecstasy tablets and 11 tablets of methamphetamines.

Flannaghan was arrested in Bangkok - he had been paid £350 by Wilcox to travel to the capital from Koh Samui with 2.9 pounds of heroin hidden in his luggage.

It is understood that Wilcox has lived in Thailand for two years and has a pregnant wife in the country.

Reasonable health

Both men, appearing in brown and orange prison uniform, had their ankles shackled and were handcuffed as they appeared in court.

It is believed both men have 30 days to appeal.

A spokeswoman for the UK Foreign Office said the Thai government would be aware that the British government opposes the death penalty, and indicated that a representation would be made to them at some point in an effort to get the sentence commuted.

Both men are receiving consular assistance and are believed to be in reasonable health, the spokeswoman added.

And here they are ........ Wilcox (left) and Flannaghan (right)

Just sending a message again

Never executed a foreigner yet.

They do kill the Thai's though, used to use a machine gun, but changed to lethal injection last year.

So they don't throw the book at foreigners...they are lenient with foreigners.

When will these fools learn. For what its worth,if hard drugs (heroin) are involved then I agree totally with the Thais. The wretches peddling this stuff should be executed, especially Britains. If I caught anyone offering my kids this stuff I'd want to pull the trigger myself

So how come Flannigan, the idiot that agreed to carry the stuff for money, gets to die and Wilcox, the man doing the business gets jailed?

Is the Bangkok Holton really that bad?

Hello yes it is that bad. Bangkok's notorious Bangkwang prison is suffering from chronic overcrowding, The prison is creaking at the seams with 6,700 inmates, twice the number it was originally designed and built to hold
Many prisoners are ill - TB and HIV are rife. The medical-care budget is grossly inadequate and The prison hospital is understaffed and understocked.

Good book

Just 1 day before these two got captured in Thailand, I read a book called "The Damage Done" by an australian guy called Warren Fellows.

He spent 12 years in 3 different prisons, including the Bangkok Hilton.

It is an incredible book which really describes what it is like.

I dont think any of us can truly comprehend what things are like inside a Thai prison, but you get the idea.

The ironic thing is that this guy was getting heroin inside the prison very very easily, usually supplied by some of the guards. Double standards ?

It is an excellent book.

You have to be crazy or stupid to bring drugs to Thailand or attempt to acquire or distribute them while in the country. C'mon; you mean to tell me there aren't enough pleasant distractions to have fun with in LOS already?
I simply don't get it; the penalty is brutal. Why take a chance?

I've always been a bit sceptical about the 'Damage Done'

I've met people who've been in jail at Bangkwang and they didn't ever see any of the sorts of things he discusssed.

After all, he has a book to sell.

The BBC did a documentary recently inside the jail which I got to see, and it was nothing like it is described these days. What era did fellows write the book about?

They showed the documentary in Belgium too. And yes indeed it wasn`t like in the book from Fellows. But you could also see when the guards got annoyed and told the crew to stop filming. Some are`s of the prison were also an NO-GO for the crew. The prisonersdirector was also verry keen to show the beautiffull places from his prison. I think like every prison over the world with a rep they will never show you those things just to keep the organisations of their back.

I agree with everyone saying that these guys are stupid. You have to ask the reason why they are doing it. The recent clampdown on drugs by the Thai government has scared the shit out of a lot of would be traffickers. However in Thailand there is still a huge demand for drugs, and the financial rewards for those willing to take the chance are huge. It would be interesting to find out how many get away with it, and how much they are earning. By taking such a hard line the profits by international traffickers, and the risks they are willing to take, have rocketed. I believe they need to clamp down on the drugs problem further in the farang areas, and scare the sh*t out of a few more farangs to reduce the demand for drugs, by publicising cases such as this. I know one thing, i would not risk it no matter how much cash was waiting at the other end.
