Network (ethernet cable) routing

My buddy is getting the cheap TT&T HiNet ADSL install tomorrow, as they dont do any setup or assitance or provide a modem or router or anything (so it seems) I was round there today and over to Big C to sort out router / modem and price up wireless networking for him (later too much for now)..

The way I will have to sort his home net will need a 25m ethernet cable up to a bedroom for a desktop computer location.. Looking at the modem / router I think it will need to be a patch or cross cable (thats usual) but I have no ethernet crimpers here to knock one up for him.

I used to always deal with Rick from Simple computers who had a great Thai lad that did all the cable routing round my home for peanuts..

So does any of the regulars know anyone cheap in patong to make a long patch cable and route it ??

Failing that does anyone have a ethernet crimp tool ??

Or any other suggestion. Installer comes tomorrow and it looks like we will need to be using my laptop to set up the router and test it etc (before the engineer can chuck the box in the corner and say its done and **** off) if we cant get the network cable in fast.

I don't think you need a crossover cable for connection modem to router or router to pc, just a CAT5 would do. Usually crossover cable is used for connecting router to router or switch to switch.

You can probably find crossover cable or cramper at Office Deport or the newly opened computer shop area in the Central Festival though.

IT access in Phuket Town can create custom made length of CAT5 cables.

If you want wireless just buy a switch and an access point. This is easy to setup yourself, just connect the ADSL router to your switch and the access point to your switch. Local computers is also connected to the switch and you assign the router as gateway to internet.

I my home I run a part wifi part wired (4 comps) so I am fairly comfortable with the setup and network issues (I used to admin a 3 office international WAN also)..

He is running into unexpected money issues so we have decided to stay wired (for now) as the cheapest access point we cound find was 3700 and then he would still need the PC and Laptop cards / dongles as well as the adsl modem, started to look >8k at that point.. Found a dual port ADSL modem and router for 2600 so that can keep him happy with the desktop and laptop until he wishes to upgrade to wireless later..

I have a patch cable running from modem to router and the cable included in his pack looked like a patch also but thats still up in the air / need to test today..

So no one in Patong that can make a long cable and tack it to the wall for a small fee ?? Wish I had the sense to grab the young Thai guys number from Simple.. Also Simple used to have a Brit (Simon) who is known here, I bet he would know the guy.

You will find Simon at Fawlty Towers in Soi Sunset. The Thai guy you are talking about is Ting and Simon does have his number.

I have a crimping tool. If you want to drop round with your cable and RJ45's you can use it, but I'm not interested in running any cables.

I actully got one made up in a Patong comp / internet shop today.. Very reasonable price and easy to get someone to route it to the wall...

So far we have wasted countless hours trying TT&T and HiNet for any for of support (or even answering the phone... I set up the POTS splitter and adsl modem and even though the engineer has not come the adsl line is live.. The only thing we are lacking is the username / password and what form of PPoE setup they expect...

As far as his TG (they were not able to understand my efforts at Thai) can get to grips with, TT&T has failed to inform hiNet of the application so no new account has been created.. Engineer was due today but did not show.. Now we are told they dont know if the engineer will come tomorrow (but wait in all day in case) ?!?!

All we need is the user name and password and we can do all the instal ourselves !! Yet even that tiny bit of assistance it too much for them !!

Seems you get what you pay for with these 1000 baht for 2 Mbit deals !!
