Unhappy Shirtless Tourists

Posted on Stickman Weely:

A shirtless frog vents.

Last Monday I spoke with a policeman at Jungceylon, Phuket. I started with "Kortod kap" and asked if it was a holiday. He had on dark Ray Bans so I could not see his eyes, but could see his stern demeanor. He said "Yes, holiday" then he said, "Why you no have shirt?" I said "Well, it is hot." He then said "I hot too, have shirt", so I said "Well, you policeman, me not policeman, me tourist!" All the time I displayed a polite smile and no smirk. He then concluded with "You put on shirt. It's my country" and he was not smiling! So I left without a word, but I was enraged with his pathetic attitude. Anyway, being the, as you know now, obnoxious French person, I went to the beach police station and asked for the captain. But he was not there so I chewed the fat with the other police there to whom I explained, as the Thais say, that this policeman had hurt my feelings. They said I should ignore him, mai pen rai, jai yen yen and all that. Welcome to Thailand, we want you to come and spend money and treat you like sh*t!

I must admit I agree with the Policeman and I hate to see this as well, people going into bars and shopping centres and restaurants with no shirt on, sweating and smelling of sweat, it is just bad manners. Everyone can afford 200 baht for a tshit after they have been on the beach or buy the pool. Its the same for the morons who go our at night after a shower without a shift on. What is that all about?

Regards

The guy was actually breaking the law, although it's rarely enforced in Patong. If it were Phuket town it would have been different. If it had been me and some guy turned up at the cop shop whining I'd have done him- wot a twonk. myabe he should study up on culture, customs and the law before he spouted off 5555

I have to agree. Why do some people think they can act with no respect to others when they are on holiday in a foreign country. they wouldnt act this way at home.

what an idiot.

He actually says by telling him to put his shirt on he is treating him like shit. It’s just polite and respectful. I don’t normally say this but the policeman is right.

BTW has Tony had another name change?!!

whats wrong with wearing shorts? Seriously i wore shorts every night, not the silky Umbro footie shorts but reasonably smart cargo shorts with flip flops and never got any funny looks and at never any point did i feel i was disrespecting anyone. Shorts are cool. Maybe you not have the legs to pull it off 55555

I understand the non etiquette thing with no shirt, as a expat that is turning native at an alarming rate then I find I am offended by no shirt wearing farang.

So sorted but nope...........what about the guy running the local super market? he is Thai, he is muslim and he sits there in the supermarket with no shirt??? the local guy working the market.....no shirt, whats this all about then?

I see locals in the village all the time with no shirts, but accept that as its not front line commercial centre, but the super market guy is, so????

Maybe I should have posted this in the wonder why thread??

Maybe its a class thing ??? if you wear a shirt/trousers seen as "upperclass" and the lower who do the manual labour are seen in shorts/shirtless . same same with the white skin / dark skin belief white skin educated in door office job and dark skin poor uneducated in the fields all day suntanned. Maybe its that sort of thinking behind it.
I see it in many S.E Asian countries a smart shirt/collar and trousers (western style) are seen to be upper class and educated and the lower wear the street wear...flip flops etc ....just a thought,I maybe wrong

What is the no shirt law anyway, I thought it was only for temples or royal properties?
Ban the bras I say.

i have said this many times before
everyone on this forum that is so protective of thai culture( even if they have no clue about it, really) is always up in arms about farangs with no shirts when i see countless more thai males

listen, i agree shirts should be worn indoors
but i see people on here be all appalled when a farang is walking around a beach town with no shirt on. oh, and that same town has a huge prostitution area, but i guess that is all part of thai culture too

Heck looking at that photo i feel quite a figure of a fella now,But I still wouldnt walk around a shop/mall topless as i personnally do not like it,its the same as watching people walking around a supermarket eating food that they havent paid for ,its just a thing that to me does show a lack of class ,morals and up bringing.
Call me a snob i couldnt give a monkeys uncle Police man should of given him a good rollocking.

Agreed holiday areas are part of Thailand but what happens in these areas has little to do with Thai culture. That said I cant stand to see people who are blatantly ignorant of their surroundings or have any respect for other people or manners and IMO there are a few nations these people hail from we can probably name, certainly the recent influx in the last year or so has had a dramatic effect

All said in Isaan it's pretty normal to see some old guy strolling down the road at dawn or at sunset with nothing more than his tartan sarong on. You also see alot of guys doing manual labour who will be topless and yet you see others fully covered with balaclavas on, amazes me how they stand the heat

As for shorts it might be a class thing but you see plenty people with shorts on day and night in Isaan

I dont have a problem with wearing shorts at night.
It just the people who topless round nice shops or supermarkets.
the beachfront type shops i wouldnt worry about ,but if i was in Junceylon then i would expect people to dress accordingly

Those two guys look like they are on 2nd Road Pattaya (maybe I am wrong) which is a coupe of hundred metres from the beach...I wouldn't designate that a beach area so maybe they should consider a pair of shorts for the undies guy and a shirt for the hirsuit one

I think with every pace you make away from a beach it becomes obvious that for a well mannered tourist a shirt is required in LOS....guys walking down the sois at night with their T shirts off and stuffed into the back pocket of their boardshoarts who are drinking 7/11 beers get up my nose...but hey is it a fineable offence???

as for shorts at night...not usually my choice but why not...as long as they knee length-ish

I think if you did a survey on night time tourists you'd find the majority wear shorts at night, why wouldn't you wear them. There are daytime shorts and evening shorts. Boardies should be day only but Billabong and the likes make some smart shorts that are perfect for evening. You'll rarely catch me wearing anything in the evening other than shorts, T shirt and flip flops/thongs/slippers etc etc in fact i only wear jeans when out on big bike.

I can even understand people being shirtless in the day walking around Patong etc.... its feckin hot but i do agree with putting on a singlet or T when going into a shop or shopping centre, its just polite and good etiquette.

The people who walk around Bangla in the evening are just showing a lack of respect IMO and they always look the menace looking type, gym freaks covered in Tatts (easy Sef)!!! Dodger is right though there are more than a fair share of local Thai's shirtless but they do seem to be of the older generation but even so to complain to a tourist, this particular copper was promoting double standards for sure. I must admit though those brown uniforms the cops wear really do look stifling hot so maybe the tourist just picked a hot cop in a bad mood (aren't they all)....

I agree 100%.....
Was recently in Phuket and supprised to see how many people without shirts and shoes walking down the streets and in shops. Personally I think its rude not to mention embarrasing... What must the Thais think of us? I mean you wouldn't walk into a big shopping centre whithout a shirt back home, so why should you when your over in LOS!!!!
Just my opinion though!

as dodger and you pointed out and i have said a few times in the past, i have seen many thai guy walking around without shirts, young and old. i have spent considerable time in my wife's neighborhood, both in patong and bkk

i will just never understand how this board becomes so anti farang when they step into thailand. i have just never seen this defense of a country that is not yours ever with any other country. if it isn't complaining about a farang not wearing a shirt, its blaming farang's for over doing it with Songkran even though me and LIL have both pointed out we have seen thai's over doing it many times.

now, i agree you should wear a shirt indoors and my mom raised me right so i know what is respectful and not. i just will never understand this defense of Thailand and anti-farang stance
it is almost like people wish they were thai or something. baffles me

It always amazes me that the cops don't pass out wearing the long black/dark uniform and helmet etc when I'm sweating my ring out in shorts and T shirt.

I guess they are used to it. I have seen Burmese workers sleep under the hot sun with clothes on also.
