Hi Kamala
If you look in the EXPAT section there are quite a few pieces of advice regarding the 30day visa ruling and renewals. You should find all the information you need there

You can get a 14 day-extension at immigration office in patong. You need two pictures and its 500 bath. (so it was two years ago).
immigration office is at the beach road. just ask.

Would not recommend an overstay.

But: Up to you, its your holiday....

cheers

except a 1 year is not automatic it requires certain conditions that may not be doable for many..

If you have time you can get a 60 day tourist visa no probs from you local Thai embassy.. Cheaper though the extension is very low hassle...

Ill be overstaying by a day or two also, And was told by nicke and other BMs that i could just pay when leaving 200baht for everyday you overstay!

So my question is, Is this still the case or do i have to apply on arrival for an extension of 14days even though im only overstaying by a day or 2?

well the thing is if you make it to the airport check out you only pay 200 baht per day... If you are caught in Thailand on overstay its a big fine (20k) plus stay in the immigration prison (not fun) plus deported with a red stamp in the passport..

For 3 days I would probably do the overstay but then again I am not the most law abiding person in the world.. In general overstaying is very bad advice..

Hi Allybabba,

You can do one of the following;

1. Apply for tourist visa at your local Thai embassy
2. Extend for 1900 baht before your visa on arrival ends
3. Pay 200 baht/day for overstay when you leave Thailand

The third option is technically illegal but common, 1-2 days i no big deal but it is best to avoid anyway, especially for people living here and want to be a good citizen and to avoid problems with authorities in the long run.

Belive me the immigration prison is worse than the Phuket Prison.. And I hear Phuket prison is really bad even by Thai standards...

The imm prison is where they lock up all the Burmese / Viet etc so you can imagine how much they spend on feeding them etc.. Buddy of mine did 9 days or so and it aint a joke..

The immigration place is only used if you are stopped in BKK

It's at Soi Suan Plu police station.

Meant to be a doddle, they even let you keep your phone.

I know people who've overstayed for over a year, 20,000B and off they go....back in a few days later. Of course, you don't want to get caught in country overstaying.

Every time I have been stopped without passport I have a stock excuse...works every time, but I ain't telling anyone, and it's best used in Bangkok.

There is no big deal about any of this, just do it right, go to your local thai embassy or consulate and get a 60 day tourist visa before you go. All you need to show them is your travel arrangements, fill in a form with 2 photos and pay about 25 pounds UK sterling or whatever that is in Euros

end of story

The last time i checked there was no thai embassy in ireland? I think the nearest one is in london, So it might be just better to sort it out when i get there.

Categorically not true.. Theres an immigration jail on Phuket (theres also a holding pen at Ranong and many other places) they do allow you to keep your phone (you will need it to phone ANYONE you know to bring you food and the phone charger and anything else you may need.. almost nothing is provided) and its far from a 'doddle'.. Roach infested rice with 1 boiled egg is considered a meal.. sleeping on the floor in a huge crowd.. etc etc etc Not a place a farang wants to be..

Highly unlikely that a genuine tourist who mistakenly overstayed a day or two would end up there but it aint worth the risks.
