Motorcycle Hire

Hi All,

2 years since last visit.

Can anyone tell me rates for bike hire ,I think it was 150bt a day last time.

Do I need a licence ? I presume if i do i need to apply for licence in Uk before I travel,(or is a copy of my uk driving licence ok) although last time I never had one as the bike was hired through a BG.
Cant imagane many tourists having licence with them ,maybe a problem if you get stopped by the local plod though.

Thanks

bring your d/l and get an international driving licence, too from the a/a or post office, dont forget, you probably arnt insured for riding a bike, so if you end up in hospital youll get zilch-also they wont treat u unless you can give them money up front ,and if u hit a local theyll screw u too !

Most good travel insurance purchased in your own country will cover you for riding a motorcycle in thailand, but the usual exclusions would apply such as not being covered if you tested for alcohol in any way.

Also no good just getting an international drivers licence to ride a bike if you only have a car licence at home, that you must also have a valid motorcycle licence in your own country for the type of bike you are riding in thailand.

In australia anything over 50cc we must have a proper motorcycle licence, so riding 100-125ccs in thailand we must have our proper motorcycle licence.

This is just from an insurance standpoint and being properly covered.

Andy as you are in the UK and i am in Australia , i cant recommend one exactly. Do a search in yahoo or google for travel insurance in UK. Youll be suprised how many insurers there are now. Many web based insurance firms offering good products.

I scanned through a couple of policy wordings and found the following
(from http://www.1stoptravelinsurance.co.uk )

"The following activities are considered to be hazardous sports & leisure activities. You will only be covered whilst participating in this hazardous sport or leisure activity, if you have paid the appropriate additional premium before your trip commenced and the activity is shown on your certificate"

- use of motorcycles over 125cc is one of those.

Looks like you can cover yourself, you will just need to request additional cover and pay the extra premium. Worth it in my opinion. But shop around! Best of luck

P.S. Maybe MikeGB can add further? I know he is from UK and has ridden big bikes in LOS.
