Haven't dived in Phuket. But if you go to Ko Samui, I highly recommend HELLO DIVING. It is run by some very cool Korean and Canadian guys.
They are located on the road from Lamai to Chaweng, with a shop at the NO NAME Bungalows, which is just before you get to Buddy Beer Bar and Susie Pub Disco not too far outside of Lamai on the way to Chaweng!
Have fun!

Marco,
Here is a very good website with lots of info about prices, courses, diving tours, certification, etc. in Phuket and elsewhere in LOS.
www.diving.hotelthailand.com
I think you might find it useful.

You can do the openwater in 3 days at sunrise diving on patong beach, the instructers have many years experience and the quality of the teaching is excellent.

I understand a lot of the dive schools try and cram the four day course into 3 days. A cynic might say this is so they only have to pay the instructors for three days instead of four.
The dive schools probably would say that the tourists want to complete the course in three days so they can do other things.
I have heard that dive instruction from Thailand hasn't a very good reputation internationally.
So what would you rather, get up at sparrow fart for three days and do a lot of cramming, or do the course over ( a more relaxed ) 4 days?

Go for the 4 days option as Coolhand suggests.
Shop around for the best overall offer, not just price.
If possible, get the manual at home and study as much as you can before you arrive in Thailand. You can get alot of it done on the plane for instance...
The quality will vary from instructor to instructor and company to company. It's not supposed to be that way, but it's a world-wide fenomenon, not just in Thailand. In the three courses I've had (Norway, Thailand and Australia) Thailand was the best one by far, all aspects cosidered.
All said and done, in the end; it's your own responsibility to be a safe diver.

Phuket diving is great
I got my certification from Warm Water Divers by doing a 4 day course and thought it was well done and I got along well with the instructors. All of my boat dives with WWD were on a South Siam divers boat and they were a great group of people and ran a good operation. I would recommend either of those shops. There are a lot of dive shops and it is simple to walk around and check them out and book a class with the one that fits your needs and has an intstuctor you can work with. Have a great diving trip and say hi to Nicke for me.
