US, Israeli intelligence warn of bombings
US, Israeli intelligence warn of bombings
Suicide attacks likely next month, they say
By Wassana Nanuam
United States and Israeli intelligence units have warned of possible attacks, even suicide bombings, in the South within the next month.
A source within a Thai intelligence agency said US and Israeli spies have been watching Muslim instigators in the three southern border provinces and had warned Thai authorities to prepare for violence.
The intelligence units did not say where or how the violence would take place, but warned there were possibilities of massive bomb attacks or suicide bombings by both male and female assailants, the source said.
The source declined to say whether officers of the US Central Intelligence Agency or Israel's Mossad were now in the South, saying only that both agencies had for months been following up on Muslim agitators there.
''The US and Israeli intelligence agencies are paying attention to violent Muslim movements in southern Thailand and checking if they have connections with al-Qaeda and JI [Jemaah Islamiyah] terrorist groups,'' the source said.
The source said Thai authorities still could not say if there were links between southern instigators and regional or international terrorist movements, citing no clear evidence.
Meanwhile, an informed army source in the South said local people had reported that young men and teenagers from several villages of Songkhla's Thepha and Saba Yoi districts had gone into the forest for firearms training, but no trace of such activities had been found.
Many young men from Sukhirin and Waeng districts of Narathiwat were missing from villages, but some villagers claimed the men had crossed the Malaysian border for work, the army source added.
The source also said a battalion attached to the Chon Buri-based 21st Infantry Regiment Royal Guard, better known as the Queen's musketeers, remained in Narathiwat to protect Thaksin Ratchaniwes Palace and carry out psychological work after Her Majesty the Queen's two-month visit to the South.
Earlier, Defence Minister Gen Thammarak Isarangkura na Ayudhaya told cabinet that Muslim instigators planned to seize Thaksin Ratchaniwes Palace by January and declare an independent state. His report has been strongly
criticised.

Ban vehicles on Bangla
I hope the report is wrong.
But I take all warnings seriously
It does not change my holiday plans or movements overseas.
My major concession to this would to be to ban vehicles on the Bangla
there is no need for all those vehicles to travel that road, especially at peak hours during the day.
just my thoughts

And oddly enough ....
PANARE, Thailand (Reuters) - Around 50 Thai Air Force planes have "bombed" the largely Muslim south with paper birds as a symbol of peace for the restive region where nearly 500 people have been killed since January.
Villagers stared into the sky on Sunday awaiting the deluge of an estimated 100 million paper birds, one of which was signed by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and carried the promise of a scholarship or a job for the finder.
Children ran around in excitement in one village as a plane appeared several thousand feet overhead at the time promised, and although the unloading of the birds was invisible to the naked eye, the paper birds descended.
Unfortunately the wind blew them beyond the village, one of hundreds in the three southern provinces near the Malaysian border which were the target of one of the biggest operations in the history of the Thai Air Force.
"I'm really disappointed," said 11-year-old Fatima Sulhong before the operation ended with planes blowing red, white and blue smoke, the colours of the Thai flag.
"All I saw was the plane flying over."
Thaksin's bird campaign, just weeks ahead of a general election, caught the imagination of the predominantly Buddhist country, even in Bangkok where sympathy for the Malay-speaking south is limited.
Everywhere people huddled in groups to fold birds -- they were meant to be doves, a symbol of peace, but most turned out to look more like cranes -- after Thaksin called on all 63 million Thais to make one.
In the end, estimates of up to 120 million accompanied five Hercules C-130 military transport planes crammed with bags of paper birds, made out of everything from bank notes to plastic, to southern airports for reloading onto smaller planes.
BIRTHDAY WEEKEND
The gesture, done this weekend to mark the birthday of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has done little to mollify the Muslim leadership of the region, once an independent sultanate that still chafes under the rule of remote Bangkok.
"The paper birds are not a traditional symbol for us," said
Abdullaham Abdulsamad of the Narathiwat Islamic Council. "It's a different culture. Our people do not understand what the birds stand for.
Even so, hundreds of people in villages throughout the region who spend much of their lives trapped fearfully between aggressive soldiers and determined militants turned out to stare upwards.
"I am very impressed that the Thai people around the country would fold birds for us," said Malorya Benarlawee, a 30-year-old Muslim in a region of rubber tappers and palm farmers where development lags much of the rest of the prospering country.
"At Friday prayers, we ask for peace."
Possibly the biggest single airdrop of paper in history was
meant to sow peace, harmony and goodwill in the three southernmost provinces, where an insurgency began in January with a raid on an army camp in which 300 assault rifles were stolen.
The mood in the region, where a low-key separatist insurgency was fought in the 70s and 80s, soured yet further in October after 85 Muslims died after a demonstration.
Most died of suffocation or were crushed in army trucks in which they had been stacked "like bricks" and the paper bird drop came just days after police insisted they needed greater powers to fight the insurgency.

Unfotunately if these militants want to hit the headlines and make their cause known world wide then the obvious targets to bomb are where there are alot of westerners hangout and make easy targets. unfortunately Phuket / Patong stands out as an obvious target.
It did wonders for these muslim militants plight in indonesia by bombing in Bali but I really hope it doesn't happen to Phuket

Yeps I agree. Don`t want to offend some board members. I was refering to Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan more to the real middle east countries. And yes they are not all situated in the stone age. I have seen Bahrein and some other very welty middle east states and they don`t act like that overthere.

A very interesting thought is....How come, muslims always blame "the other world" of their problems..everyhting is other countries and religions fault!?
Muslims always say they are missunderstood..always victims...?!
Always having to fight the "wholy war" in the name of their god..
Think of it..How many muslim countries are successful in business..really..?
Not many...
The only one I can come to think of is Dubai, one of the emirates in UAE ,who has adopted a lot of other countries way of living...a sort of "Islam light"!

Gonna contradict what I just said on an above post now. The problem is the muslims (the islamic fundamentalists) that is need to be taught a Proper lesson on fighting. They are cowards who bomb people but are no where to be seen. Ever seen one in hand to hand combat??? Never. They are cowards.
I heard the americans in Iraq were showing their jihadist friends being buried with pigs so they wouldn't go to heaven and which then convinced these idiots/cowards to give US intelliengence information.
Otherwise they wouldn't get their 72 virgins in heaven

It's too bad, really
It's too bad, because they want to kill the people who bring and spend so much money in their countries. I'm speaking of westerners in Thailand of course. I mean, a trip to Thailand can cost you upwards of 3 grand USD if you count plane tickets, hotel, and all the cash you spend on the ladies ... hehehe. Really too bad.

This is travel advice is from the Australian Government The Department Of Foreign Affairs And Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-c...dvice/Thailand
Australians in Thailand should exercise extreme caution. We continue to receive reports that terrorist elements in South East Asia are planning attacks against a range of targets, including places frequented by foreigners.
Australians are advised to defer non-essential travel to the provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla, including deferring non-essential overland travel to and from the Malaysian border through these provinces.
Safety and Security
Terrorism
Australian travellers should be aware of the threat of terrorism globally and should read this travel advice in conjunction with the General Advice to Australian Travellers.
Australians in Thailand should exercise extreme caution. We continue to receive reports that terrorist elements in South East Asia are planning attacks. These could occur at any time and could be directed against any locations frequented by foreigners such as, but not limited to, embassies, shopping malls, clubs, hotels, restaurants, bars, schools, places of worship, outdoor recreation events and tourist areas. Infrastructure associated with the Thai Government such as public transport, airports, sea ports and public buildings are also potential terrorist targets. Security at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok remains at a high level as a precautionary measure.
Civil Unrest/Political Tension
Australians are advised to defer non-essential travel to the provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla, including deferring non-essential overland travel to and from the Malaysian border through these provinces. Thai separatists have threatened attacks against foreigners and warned foreign tourists not to travel to these areas.
Australians should use a reputable tourist guide when travelling near the Burma/Thai border due to ongoing conflict and banditry along some sections of this border. This includes conflict between the Burmese military and armed opposition groups as well as clashes between Thai security forces and armed criminal groups, such as drug traffickers. Australians should obtain up-to-date local advice from the local Tourist Police or security officials on the safety of travel to specific areas along the border. Travel in border areas at night and camping in undesignated areas in national parks should be avoided. Australians should be alert to the risk of kidnapping in the area.
There have also been occasional reports of banditry and violence along isolated parts of the borders with both Cambodia and Laos. Australians should only cross into these countries at designated international border crossings with the required travel documentation.
The terrorist threats in southern Thailand are occurring against the backdrop of ongoing violence in the region. Violent incidents have been endemic for many years. However the intensity and co-ordination of these incidents has been on the increase since early 2004, and has involved the placement of bombs in shopping districts, armed attacks on security forces and the torching of schools. Martial law is in place throughout a number of districts. Australians should closely adhere to instructions from Thai security forces and to the local security measures put in place by these authorities.

The Police were going around the bars the other day looking for staff that come from the southern provinces.
I take all these warning about threats with a grain of salt.

US is issuing warnings all the time of possible threats and/or actions, due to the high volume and rate of these I take it with a grain of salt.
Althought there is problems in the south and it is best to avoid the southern provinces.
I also dont think this has to do with international terrorism, it's about a small minority who is not happy with the Thai government.
