Travelling Alone..Good or bad?
Making my second trip to LOS in a few months, however this time i will be travelling alone without my friend. Does anyone have any advice on travelling alone? Is it better? Worse? More dangerous? Any advice would be much appreciated.
P.S Its a pleasure to have joined this board. Thanks guys.

John 230481
For me it's the same first trip al alone in March 2005...Phuket is not really worrying me since I know this place a bit, but
what you guys think about going out solo in BKK at night (Patpong + Nana Plaza)? Any input would be appreciated.

Never had problems when I went out alone in Bangkok. Always ended up with BG`s or some farangs to go out with.

Most of us here travel alone, has the main advantage of being able to please yourself and not have to come to disagreements with friends over this.
You won't have somebody blabbing to others back home about what you got up to either.
And don't forget, a single man in los is not alone for long.
As for safety, like the other bm's i have never felt unsafe in los even once.
just apply all the usual common sense that you would use for travelling in general, like not falling asleep in airports as some people do - as you have nobody but yourself to watch your things.
If out late at night, keep with the crowds - but i really mean this for places like BKK as patong is pretty safe in comparison.
Get yourself over there and enjoy every minute.

6 trips,3 with friends 3 without.it has its advantages and disadvantages.
you never need to worry what you do,its upto you.you can go places you like instead of worrying about if your mates will like, you only have to answer for yourself.the only thing i worried about being alone is activities in the day when i wasnt with a girl.but i have met so many people from here, that we all ended up doing stuff together,go karting, bowling, going places like prom thep and kata, drinking, going to christins etc.you will not be bored, believe me.

Alone is ok
2 times to los with friends 5 one time 4 the other.
good fun, but sometimes i feel obligated if they want me to go shopping with them or sightseeing as i speak better thai.
I have travelled to parts of los alone with not much thai language and nightlife pretty lean.
That can get a bit lonely but its all part of the adventure.
In BKK i quite often just hop the bus and end up god knows where without a map just looking around.
this can worry me a little but i feel safer doing this in los than anywhere else.
But in the farang zones no problem biggest danger is probably soccer hooligan types who dont seem to like someone who learns about thailand and can laugh with the locals not just the BGs.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be travelling alone in mid January. Plan to stay in Bkk for the first few days, then head off to Phuket. Not too worried about walking around the bar areas at night (Like you say, its nenever lonely in los for the single man), i'm more bothered about getting bored on my own during the days. I'm sure i'll meet up with other farangs though.

It's never a problem, mate. Just don't get plastered beyond reason....
If you haven't booked a hotel in bkk, try Nana Hotel or Nana Inn. It's smack in the middle of the fun and right by the Skytrain.
The only time I have been worried in Thailand was when the taxi broke down on the tollroad from Pattaya to BKK in the middle of nowhere late at night.
Ended up getting towed by another cab, but as always the driver went mach-9 with his hair on fire. That was actually more frightening than being stranded on the highway....

Thanks for the info Shagrath. I was planning on staying in the Grace Hotel again in Bkk. Its also very close to the action, however I might take your advice and try the Nana. I prefer Soi Cowboy, however I can't think of any hotels that are close to it? Any ideas?

John, I think the Manhattan is quite near Cowboy. It's on Soi 15. Not a bad hotel, not much personality but its clean and tidy, medium price, guest friendly, no joiner fee but they check ID. Very nice Japanese restaurant on the ground floor (at least there was when I stayed there!)
It's also just around the corner from the legendary Thermae.
By the way, does anybody know if Thermae is still going or what has happened to it? It used to be a 'must see' destination in BKK.

Is the Manhattan set back quite a distance from the main Sukhumvit road?

Last time in BKK, two years ago, I stayed in the Ambassador hotel. Rooms were quite sober but ok. Do not remember very clearly if this hotel was close to Patpong and/or Nana. Who can help me here?

What rate are you getting at the Ambassador? Is it guest friendly?
