Our sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones in this disaster.
For those staying here .. Thai Channel ITV has the names of those confirmed dead scrolling in english at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately there is no Thai channel broafcasting details in english ... but as of 8.30 AM (local) there are 66 confirmed dead and 700 injured and 22 missing.
We tried to post yesterday but lost connection - mobile lines are still patchy especailly with voice but SMS seems to get thru ok.
The police blocked all traffic from going to the West Coast up to 4 pm yesterday ... we found way through to Kata around this time and the destruction along the low lying beach areas is immense.
Kata Noi was blocked by debris and could not get access ... Kata from the stadium to the Karon roundabout was hit hard .... the bar area around Karon was badly hit.
Down into Patong - police blacked access to Prachannukhro Rd ..and armey reserves blocked Ruamchai Rd (Holiday Inn) and could see large amount of debris in these sois. Ended up stopping outside Tai Pan and walked down Bangla .... surge had made it all the way back to Ratuthit Rd but most of the severe damage limited to Thaweewong (Beach) Road and bottom end of Bangla and Sawadirak Rd.
Along the beach surge was up to 6m and never seen sight where everything from the beach was totally washed away ... horrific and very sad to see. Even at this time were ambulances and trucks taking people away. Was not good to see Burmese and some Thai pilfering thru the wreckage of shops and not enough police to stop them... the police erected a barrier at Tiger but people just went thru anyway.
As for bar damage from what we saw ...
Tai Pan, Baya Beach, Soi San Sabai, Extasy, Valhala, Paradise Complex, Soi Nam Yen .... northern end bars of Rathuthit Road ... all undamaged.
Tiger Complex .... no damage but at 5.30pm (local) yesterday there was no power.
Soi Lion .....these people unluky withe the new soi as debris and damage looked severe.
Soi Eric .... water damage to 25-50 cm lots of debris but looked to be cosmetic only ....not any structural damage.
Soi Gonzo - flooding still there and structural damge to entrance bars.
Soi Andaman .... severe damage to front bars and still flooded .. Crocadile Disco OK.
Soi Dragon ...OK except bars at entrance.
Beach Road - totally destroyed ..... never seen so much damage ..looks like a war zone and will have to be redeveloped totally.
Note that authorities have closed all schools for 2 days and are on alert for aftershocks.
Phuket Gazette has last updated at 20.25 pm yesterday - but info from Phi Phi and out lying islands is patchy.

im ok,
i actually, belive it or not, slept through the whole thing until 2pm. my gf room is on the same soi where jt mansion and kwan and noi live. we heard all kind of commotion but didnt think anyhting of it. when we walked outside we could tell something was wrong. it was very frustarting because the police and fire were not too much help and my gf was a major pain in the ass. i kept on asking her to ask people and i got the typical thai responses. but we are ok, and looks like we might head up to her home in suphan buri. is anyone meeting up tonite?

You are going a really great service Nicke by keeping this board going during the emergency.
I was in Kamala yesterday morning and there devastation in the village is really terrible.Cars and trucks pulled way out to sea.A great many houses and shops smashed. I don't believe that the full story of Kamala has got out yet.
We took to the hills for a few hours as everyone seemed to beleive that a second wave was on its way.
The police and other officials were nowhere to be seen here. But, one thing I do want to say so that the ordinary Thai people were WONDERFUL. They steeped and assisted in every way they could, often risking their own safety. Up in the hills, one Thai was even handing a loaf of bread to every farang he could spot!

I found this board while searching for news on phuket. This must be the most updated 'news' I could get on phuket. Thanks to all who keep the news coming.
I got some friends in patong and kamala... manage to contact those in patong... but none in kamala. anyone got pictures on kamala?.. I'm going there on 9th jan 2005. Got the flight tickets... but not sure of the hotel.. Saw some pics of the hotel, tantum mansion, on this board and it look devastated.. Maybe I give some time before I call them.. I'm sure they got more concern then my booking. How are things going.. I'm still going no matter how bad the situation but i just want to be prepared.

What we see on tv right now is dreadfull! So many deads, not only Phuket! The room with all little children laying dead next to each other is terrible to see!
I don't want to cancel my holliday in March, because it would make things worse for the locals, but honestely, a holliday is the last thing on my mind now!

Yes, lot of tragedies now, not only the deaths but also all missing kids or husbands/wifes who try to find eachother and don't know if they live or not.
Phuket local TV showed footage when people arrived from Phi Phi to Phuket, many injured with pain, sad and crying people and so on. Too see wrecks or damage is one thing but all those people with pain, injures and missing kids is a big tragedy. A very sad way to end their holiday.
I also heard from a friend, a Swedish girl who was here two weeks ago (Shagrath met her) who had her mum in a newly built house in Khao Lak. They were very happy for their new house in Thailand.
Khao Lak wasnt mentioned in the first reports but it was also hitted hard. My friend couldnt reach her mom for days and she was very worried, but today she found out she had escaped from her water filled house through a window and left all her belongings, passport and tickets inside the house. So a happy ending in this case, but lot of Swedish are missing in this region.

What we heard on tv here in sweden khao lak and phi phi was hit the hardest, on phi phi two waves from each side of the island came in, one women was washed from one beach to the other side. On khao lak a swedish hotellmanager feared that maybe hundreds of swedes on holliday may be dead only at that place....

I also heard on TV that there were no news from a Sofitel hotel in Kao Lak ... 350 tourists and 250 employees there. The communication is completely cut, but they know the hotel has been smashed .

I stayed at Seapearl Hotel in Sept, and used a phone box every second day to call family in friends....it is now under this bus.

Our thoughts are with you.
Our thoughts are very much with you in this devastating time, here in OZ the Red Cross has set up dontations and the government has pledged $10million we hope that Phucket and the other Asian countries has a speedy recovery, God Bless those that didn't make it RIP.
For those who survived treat this as a blessing and think of the million people who are worse off than us and are left homeless by this tradegy.
Remain positive and strong for thoise in need.
See you in March all the best.

Just a brief note to let you know that my family and extended entourage are all OK. A little bit shocked but no injuries. Saw Chet yesterday. Hope to see you before I leave.

Did some of you contacted your bg-friends?
I had a word from Onepen, she did quit the bar, so she was not in Phuket! I am a bit worried about Tig. She is a popular girl and could have stayed with a "customer" in one of the hotels... I
It is sad, all this, think about it all the time!
