Journey to Thailand in January?
Hi!
My Name is Stefan, I'm living in Vienna/Austria and I have a ticket for a flight to BKK on the 6th of january. I want to visit Chiang Mai, some Islands in the East but also the Western Coast (NP Khao Lak, Similan, Phi Phi) of Thailand.
I was very shocked as I heard about the Tsunami in South-East-Asia. It's very sad...
Do you think it's ok to come to visit the western coast at the end of january?
I think it will take some days before they know the exact situation. Or is it better for me to look for another destination??? What do you think
Thank you very much

I think the best thing is to go to thailand and support them, would be worse if they first got hit by this disaster and then the tourists stop coming

I know, this would be another catastrophe.
But maybe the people don't want tourists now, or there is no place to sleep.
thanks for your answer

I think you should come, the life here is getting back to normal and people work to restore and clean-up Patong every day. Ofcourse many hotels and shops on the beach read may need longer time to be back in operation.
If all tourists starts avoid Phuket then there will be really bad for us.

Hi Kamala,
I just talked to a BG from Kamala this afternoon, first time I can reach her since the Tsunami.
She said "everything very very bad in Kamala". She didn't give me many details (her English is really bad when she doesn't speak her BG language ), but I assume that many places doesn't exist anymore (little restaurants on the beach, the Gourmet on the corner of the school and Moo 3, probably more paces as the village of Kamala is just perpendicular to the beach.
She said that one of her friend died while swimming when the tidal wave hit the island.
Many people (BG or not) would need to go to Bangkok to find a work as they lost theirs in Phuket.
I certainly woldn't want to cancel my trip in february. If I could, I would like to be in Phuket right now and give some help.

By the end of Jan it will be safe to come again.. Lots of things will take a long time to reinvest and rebuild (beach rd) but bars will be open etc..
Tonight I was in tiger and you would not believe the ratio of FL to punters.. Not trying to make light of this tragedy in any way but just let people know that the same people are here just in less bars..
One sad point.. One of my favorite ST's called today to say she was leaving for BKK and Momma.. She did not like the bar scene anyway (she was a sweetheart) and this terrified her too much.. One down..

I just receive some news from Deng's restaurant, in the middle of the beach of Kamala. Everybody is OK in his staff, but Lars, the boss, doesn't know more about other places.

I wish I could be there now as well, but military obligations prevent that. I have had a trip planned since July for the middle of January. Recent reports have that the Tourism Authority is urging the cancelling of trips planned for the next two to four weeks. I am concerned that I will not be able to get down there from BKK. What do you think?

I'm quite sure the tourists won't avoid Phuket, but I think it's for the better that new tourists don't arrive before the whole situation is stabilized.
The worst thing that can happen in the aftermath of any large-scale accident or disaster, is that non-professionals get into the mix and in effect confusing the matter even more. This is of course not to be confused with volunteers helping out in an coordinated effort. The key word being "coordinated."
If you have booked a trip to Thailand, support them by choosing another destination in the kingdom until the authorities give the all-clear for tourists to return to the affected regions. That's my opinion anyway.

well, could have guessed "GF" "LT" and "ST" ;-)
but "FL" is new - does it mean what I think it does? ;-)

Girl unattached to a bar... Often the more confident types or part timers occupy this role and 'pull' in the discos etc...
Of course currently not being attached to a bar means thier bars are not open.

You should have no problem to fly from Bangkok to Phuket, new BMs arrived as late of yesterday and other people arrived two days ago.
Farangs are welcome.

When your hotel is at 10 minutes walk from the beach it should be sure. I think it means 10 falang minutes, not 10 thai minutes. Qhen you look around the forum, you can see a link for the state of most hotels, which is updated regularly.

as far as I know, the beach has already been cleaned. Yesterday military was working to put the wrecked cars away and clean the streets (maybe with caterpillars). The do not want any diseases, malaria in Patong. I think the biggest problem are the supermarkets in the lower floor near bangla and the beach road, which were completely flooded.
as for the state of the beaches yesterday see:

Thanks for the link page, put me at ease about heading there January, Due to arrive January 26th early morning via train, I'm assuming trains are still running fine with no problems. Was very close to cancelling my trip there after the tragedy. But since I've seen the pictures you left I feel alot better about heading down there. Still a bit concerned about any diseases etc but hopefully by time I get there things will be somewhat back to normal. Side note.... Still waiting to hear from a friend who was there snorkeling/scuba diving the day of the Tsunami. Very concerned he was hurt or worse. My heart goes out to all the families affected by this terrible disaster.
