It depends on your hotel policy. When you make phone calls from your hotel, maybe

- local calls within Phuket are free
- phone calls to 800 numbers are free

When I stayed last time at KataThani, I bought the red internet access card for email from my notebook and I got a free local line for my whole stay without charging. When I stayed in a hotel near Bangkok, I paid for calling an 800 number. Next time I try IP-telephony connecting to web.de or Sygate.

In Germany I can buy a prepaid card, therefore I pay about 50ct per minute for calling anybody in Germany, using an 800 number in Thailand. I can use this card even with an AIS mobile phone. On the other hand, I can call my friend from Germany calling his AIS mobile phone for about 11ct using this card.

Roaming with a european SIM card is expensive. Last time I paid 62 ct to AIS for every minute of incoming call and the same for calling an 800 number.
