I would stay in Bangkok longer then 3 days.
And i would not stay in Bangkok first i would do that before i go home, There is so much to see and so much shopping to do. And ofcourse, there will be alot of walking so if you're not used to the heat it might be a good idea to do some relaxing in the sun before you head to the city of angels.
A few things i would recomend in Bangkok.
1: Long tail boat along the c****. River (edit: Stupid censorship)
2: Pratunam market.
3: Patpong at night (Nightmarket)
4: Clubbing! Bed supper club!
5: See Grand palace
6: Snake farm
7: Thai boxing
8: Massage (Go to the massage school in the temple) Unfortunatly i cant remember what it's called.
9: MBK (Huge shopping centre)
10: If you got any kind of respiratory problems (Asthma etc) Make sure to bring medicine, it's heavy polluted.
A few things i would advice against
1: Dont rent a vehicle.
2: Dont go with tuk tuk's
That's it, if you havent been there before you will LOVE it and the people in Bangkok aswell.
As for the other locations you mentioned, i have never heard of them, sorry

So will you have a local tour guide for isaan (nudge, nudge, wink, wink???)
as for planning my next trip, that starts before I leave from the previous one!!
will you be flying solo on the next trip,or taking your minder with you???
Glad to see you're ok,it was a nervous couple of days watching Thai tv hoping not to see you (and knowing you were heading to Phi Phi),if you see what I mean, because we couldn't get through to Patong by phone!!!
Catch up with you on the next trip,I hope,
Cheers,
Bonnetti

Personally I find it hard to believe that Phi Phi will ever be the same again. As for being back in business,Im sure the daytrips will have recommenced, but I wouldnt be so sure about the accommodation side of things. Rumour has it that it won't be rebuilt,at least certainly not as we knew it
Anyway if you haven't been to Phuket, you will have a nice surprise awaiting you. There are plenty of nice places to keep you occupied

KK is nice but only worth a couple of days. Chiang Rai is another place to look at, very Thai, but much quieter than KK or Chiang Mai. Not sure if you are classing the Chiangs as Issan.

If most of the bg's in phuket come from khon khen(issan)then and I'm just thinking ,would'nt you want to maybe stay long enough to get to know some of the up and commers to the bar scene? Two weeks! Get them while there fresh!555

One of my mates once said about the Khon Khen bus station that it looked like the worlds biggest mass transit station for BG's..

udon`s ok
G`day Eric,
I spent a couple of nights in udon thani in august...I was blown away by the place, cheap as chips,i stayed at a great 4 star hotel right smack in the middle of town for 1400 baht per night...udon thani is nothing like i expected,it`s got all the mod cons, quite a few bars in town and not the hick town i expected at all. the country looks great ,nice day trip up to the border of laos....it`s actually looks a place on the rise i think, there even looks to be a bit of money in town, the`re building a big new airport.plenty of lovely looking locals, although i was with my tg.I`m no sicko but my fondest memory was of my girl taking her 6 year old neice into our hotel room for a beauty session in the bathroom, having seen her house and how she bathes at home the little girl thought she was in heaven, the bath the shower the bubbles she loved it,a simple thing we take for granted put a smile on her little face .....btw way I was sitting on the bed watching tv drinking my 60 baht beer..........
it`s all good as i saw it

Khon Kaen
Hi All
I visited Khon Kaen (flew via Air Asia - very cheap) last November with the intention of staying 3 nights there.
It is a great opportunity to see "real thailand" - we were literally the only tourists there. However, not too much to see, we went to the Museum, went to the temple and lake (which was huge) and all was a good experience.
One of the memories that stands out for me was when we were leaving the museum, an old guy (must have been 60, 70s) shouted over to us - he was sitting outside the museum about 50 yards away - well anyway, we ended up having a long chat with him about politics!!! - talking about Tony Blair and George Bush (it was around US election time) - it was strange because he seemed to know so much - and was very friendly - joking away etc - it just reinforced my liking of the Thai people and the friendliness they show.
Another funny memory was walking around and all the kids who had finished school were pointing at us with their friends on the songthews - "farang, farang" and laughing - they were all so happy (/imagines school kids on the bus on the way home in UK ripping up seats with a penknife they stole a day earlier).
The nightlife is concentrated around an area called "Hi Tech" bars and consists of a couple of pub/bars, karoke bars and nightclub - mainly catering for the students of KK Uni - and to be fair we weren't really noticed by them. We did see a fight kick off which also had us in stitches - a student had a go at a bouncer with a bottle then ran away as fast as he could with the bouncer (fag in mouth) chasing after him - then a couple of other students jumped on their bikes to chase the action....
I would say there is not that much to do and we decided to leave after the 2nd day by getting a sleeper train back to Bangkok. However, it would have been a good idea to maybe go for days out to the Cobra Farm or a day at the lake (where all the students hang out apparently) or go to other towns such as Roi Et.
I hope this helps to give a better idea of the area - I was definitely glad I went there as it was a different experience - I wouldn't go though if you are looking for a BG-type environment as it doesn't really exist (for tourists anyway).
Cheers

I heard a bunch of rumors, one i heard is about Swedish investors forming up to rebuild.
And i also heard that it's gonna be ALOT more expensive on PhiPhi sorta like a rich man island, but so far thats only speculations

I'm on tour for a month Jan 21 - Feb 22 and am spening a week in Udon Thani. There's a good website www.udonmap.com and accommodations are cheap and lots of bars & discos by the looks of it. BGs in training maybe but I know a lot of the girls from around the Nana go home at least once a month so I don't see being very lonely there. I'm thinking of staying at the Aussie Pub (rooms 400 baht/night) and it is central to nightlife I think. Right now don;t know the exact dates cause I'm trying to decide where 2 be on Feb 9 for Chinese New Years. Bangkok, Patong Beach, or Udon Thani.

For your 1st trip to Khon Kaen area about 5 days
You will find probably Bus does not live in Khon Kaen city but family home likely to be a village somewhere in Khon Kaen area
My advice is this:
Stay in a hotel in Khon Kaen city
You can sample the very good night life
You can go and visit family on day trips
This will aclimatise you better, I dont think you could stay in her home, it can be a bit of a shock to the system
Also you cannot get farang food outside Khon Kaen City etc etc..........
Everyone goes to be about 9-10pm and up at 5.30-6am
Not much to do at night in the village other than get pissed and east Lao food, unless there is a festival on
cheers G

Udon Thani
I was in Udon Thai last November and I stayed at the Aussie Pub and guest house. It is in the previous link funnily enough under accommodation. The guest house is separate to the Pub part, they also rent scooters at a fair price I think from memory about 150 baht. The pub is right in town and they are really friendly both at the guest house/hotel big clean rooms all new 400 baht a night when I was there. Laundry was also cheap there.
People were friendly every where and some very nice young local girls who were also friendly. A fair amount of night life for a little place, Mr Tong’s (who is a raging fag) bar in the main street, was a happening place with a lot of free lance girls hanging around. But it is not a Pattaya or Patong for selection and volume. I liked the place but 3 or 4 days was enough as there isn’t really a lot to do in the day time. Nong Khai (i think) at the border is not very far on the bike but you do run out of things to do. Bars close pretty early to I recall about 1 and I think Mr Tongs went to 2, but then you can go and eat and go into smaller places to drink but usually into a quiet back room, not a party place. I don’t know if the discos open late.
Definitely worth a look but not to long.

What do you need in the countryside:
a car to drive around, so you can go to the next amphur
a dvd player and some dvds for the night (maybe you have a tv)
what can you expect
- maybe a funeral (lot of free food and alcohol)
- maybe a wedding
- visiting local market
- visiting local school
- visiting SAHA chicken farm (recommended)
- search for next internet shop
- look around for farang houses (they are thankful for visit)
go sleep when it gets dark, no nightlife on countryside
maximum stay two nights
- one night driving up
- one day doing steps described above
- on day driving back to BKK

etv,
this is kinda of an old post, but heres my take. ive been up country and i was fortunate to stay in a beautiful big house. you really have to consider that and i would be blunt and ask your girl what type of house she has. i was in suphan buri last month, and a farang from the usa came up, but his gf lived in a shack, and he was a really big guy, he left the next day because the mosquitos and heat were killing him. i would make loose plans for 3-4 days, and then go from there. expect to surrounded by her family 24/7. and expect to pay for alot of things, which cost very little up there

when i was there etv i had no probs with family, yea we went out with them but in the evenings we did our own thing.i admit the villages aint all that comfortable,i stayed 1 night then stayed in hotel for the rest of my 4 days there.i recomend getting a car tho,i did a lot of driving between the village and kk itself.i never had a prob with mossies but did get the squits after a meal in the village.that said it was a nice meal.i think you will enjoy it,i did and am heading back there in april before moving on to chang mai.and after reading an earlier post i am very interested in this jungle tour, anyone tell me what it involves?
