Greetings from Vancouver Canada.
My name is Steve.
I have been lurking around this site for about a week.
I'd just like to say you all sound like a great bunch. The sense of humor in some of these posts
just about knocked me off my chair.
Last time I was in Thailand was 1982. I was just a kid then...now I'm an old fart I guess.
After the tsunami I wanted to do something more direct than donating money to the Red Cross.
I found a girl who lives in Phuket through japan-friend.com.
After a few emails I decided to take a chance and I sent $500.00 to her.
She was very surprised by my trust in her. She calls me her god-father.
She lost her job because of the tsunami and she knows a six year old boy who lost both
parents.
I'm not looking for romance...I'm married.
I own a business that makes more money than I ever expected in my life.
I want to do what I can to help but I don't want to be a fool!
I intend to keep sending money every month.
Any ideas on how I can show trust but VERIFY would be appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

"The unexpected gift is worth 10 times the promised reward", is a saying that came to mind when I read your post. It is wonderful and you are a kind person to think to do someting like this.
However I would suggest giving to as many different ppl, on a one off or a couple of times basis, rather than supporting a single girl. Ineviably she will come to relie on you for income and may ask for more money as her living standard increases. Thats not saying asia ppl are like that coz the truth is all ppl are like this, mo' money mo' things to be had. So helping as many different ppl with that unexpected gift would serve the community as a whole and be much more rewarding personally I would think.
Again you are a very kind and generous man and good on ya for that.

A american man, Reid Ridgeway has a relif found for peolple in need.
I send $100 USD by PayPal to his brother Todd and he told Ried that.
The nex day I got an e-mail from my friend, thanking for the $100.
He is doing a video documentation about his aid work.
Read more about his work, and please make a donation.

I think it's a great idea and i wish i did something similiar. However i donated my money to redcross wich isnt a bad thing, ofcourse. However Thailand and Phuket got a special place in my heart, while these other country's have my sympathy ofcourse but they also feel farther away.

Very good way to proceed but echo the above comments of spreading charity rather than supporting one single person who may come to expect it..
Try to find multiple people and make each one the cash donation one or a couple of times..
Also what do you mean trust but verify ?? If you are genuinely giving without expectation of return I am trying to see what you are looking to verify ??
Well done.. I personally like the direct action touch..

I'd like to thank you all for the encouragement.
I will take it to heart.
Jimmy D have a look at http://www.rxdirect2u.com/
I make the product advertised there although I doubt it is the sort of Canadian drug store you're thinking about.
My wife and I are looking for a place to retire.
Think I'll hang around this board for a while and learn more about lifestyle
in Thailand.
It's drawing me like a magnet.
thanks again all
Steve

Hello Steve,
Your idea is pretty good and I would like to do the same , but
have You thought about whole year climate difference?
It is fine for us North people to be in Phuket November to April ( mild humidity, temperatures about 30 degrees Celsium - have no idea about Fahrenheit ), but the rest part of the year might be rather tough? Hmm - only having a theory...
Hopefully Nicke will give You hints , how to survive for expat whole year in Phuket.
Honestly saying I'm simply jealous about such possibility in the life why not me

Year round hot is OK with me!!
I was born and raised in the frozen north but never learned to like it.
That's why god invented air conditioning.
Jimmy D....50 plus years of that medication never hurt me
What's the deal on the herb in Thailand?

hi plasticsmith, welcome to the board!hope you get some useful info from it!--drugs of any sort are a big no-no in los, even cannibis, although you can get it im told,
the penalties are severe for possesion,,last year the thai p/m ordered the police to kill anyone who they suspected of dealing in drugs --thousands of people were slaughtered including boys ,most were probably innocent imo!but as they say in los--up to you!

wow
Well...that sort of takes the wind out of my sails!
I don't think I can live in a country with such an attitude about a plant that grows everywhere.
"kill people who smoke pot"
I can't even help support such a country.

Smoking ?
I have"nt smoked weed in 15 years but if I did want to try again, I would never
never try in LOS.
You have to much to lose for a buzz in Thailand.
I would suggest Caribbean for that, then you will pay three times ammount
for good time that can be done in LOS without buzz.
I get natural high from Thai WOMEN plus 15 tiger beers!

Smoking pot is illegal, sure. But for cannabis there is usually only a fine (unless you got alot on you) For heavier drugs you get jailtime + a fine.
And for drug dealing they lock you up and throw away the key.

Anyone that starts the 'why do you need to' arguement needs to go an have another beer...
Ohh sorry its ok to drink your drug is it ??
Alchohol kills more people than all illegal drugs combined.. Of course thats a taxable drug so that makes it alright..

pot
I didn't intend to start a drug policy debate here.
I come from Vancouver Canada where we have a more enlightned attitude.
I dont even consider pot to be a drug anymore than one thinks of beer as a drug.
My point is...I am successfull in my business and my personal life.
I provide a good job for nine other people and we all smoke pot from time to time.
The idea that someone thinks I should be killed for this is beyond comprehension.
I will continue to support my new found friends in Thailand in spite of their governments attitude....inspired by US pressure no doubt.
