I need about 80k per month according to my last couple of years and staying in Patong..

Dont think thats living very excessive and its easy to go on the piss and start blowing 5k per night for extended monthsand double that... Was a lot cheaper when I lived with my one girl and was not living crazy.. Probably as low as 50k per month then..

Though I am now looking at a villa + pool that would be that much on rent alone

That depends on where in Thailand you wanna live, this should give you an idea about how much it costs in Bangkok.

http://www.thailandguru.com/tips-living-cheaply.html

*edit*
With that said, in Bangkok a luxurious highrise condo in the Sukhumvit business center, 2 bedrooms, fully furnished kitchen, living room, dining room, two toilets, swimming pool, etc.

Would cost about as much as a shabby 2-3 room appartment in Sweden without anything special, and definitly no pool.

Hmm i wonder where im gonna retire!

I dont know exactly how much I spend but I guess it is in the 40-50,000 baht range on average for each month. To rent a house for 50,000 baht/month as LivinLOS plans to do would be impossible for me. Most people I know here live in a room, house or apartment in 8-20,000 baht/range.

I lived in Bangkok 10+ years ago.
It was bad then, it must be unbelievable now!

A while back, I drove from Cha-am to Bkk in around two hours. Then from Sathorn to the Landmark took another two!

Man - who'd be a taxi driver??? Poor buggers

I didnt mean that to sound boastful merely underline that its easy to spend large amounts even in Thailand (though nothing like Europe or UK).. I currently live in a 15k per month rental but I have been pining after a private pool since I got here (BFing 1/2 a gogo and bringing the lot back to your own pool just has to be worth it) but finding private pools in Patong is REALLY REALLY hard.

I understand you can live pretty well on 40 - 50 but also factor in that you A) have a bar and B) have a monogomous relationship (I guess).. I would say that I probably spend more on both drink and women than I do on rent so if you took these costs out I would probably be about the same at 50k or so (how I used to be when I was living normally with someone)..

If you just get out of Patong you can rent a house for what a room or apartment would cost but then I would be riding bikes home at 4am drunk and the risks involved are not small.. Personally I would go nuts living long term in a room or studio flat, I am not here temporarily and I have my stuff from Europe shipped over, the walls would start closing in and I would have to spend every night and day out in bars.. I probably save more by havig a home I dont mind staying in some times and watching a flick etc.

You can live 'in Thailand' for probably sub 30k even with internet and beer if you are outside of tourist areas.. Make that 40 - 50 if you can be frugal in a small place in a tourist area.. 60 - 80 gets you not being frugal just careful and after 80 or so you have a nice home and dont think about your spending much (outside BKK I guess).. Of course the 'seaview villa' crowd would be in the 150 - 200 once you have a mega high end villa and maid, gardener, etc.. Considering thats only about 20k per year English why even think about retireing back there ???

My house is 23000 baht per month, my daily budget is 2000 baht, so about 60,000 baht per month pin money. This does not include the alcohol I consume at my bar which is probably about 500,000 baht per month (ha ha only joking)

So I reckon you can get by on about 80,000 baht per month
