Is this kind of trip possible ? (1 year)

Hello,

I am from Canada, i am 22 years old and in 12 months, i will be finishing university. Bachelor degree in Information Technologies

I would like to spend one year in thailand, as a tourist (not working). I would like to know if it is possible. I read somewhere that i have to get a 3 months visa then request an extension...but can i repeat that for one year ? Because i'd really like to spend 12 months in Thailand and visit as much as i can

I would like to buy Opened flight tickets and i will have around $7000 CA (or $5700 USD or 220 307 THB in my bank account, after buying tickets)

Is that enough money ? to live there for a year ? to get the needed visas ?
I am opened to suggestion, every day for the next year, until im ready to go. I get more and more informations.

Thank you for your help
Im glad i found this forum

To be honest, if you're going all that way, and for so long, why restrict yourself to Thailand? You could do Laos, cambodia and Vietnam as well, and if you get your timing right, you wont have to worry about visa timing too much. Don't get me wrong, I love Thailand, but i think you'd be doing yoursellf a disservice if you didn't see as much as you can.

As for the money - maybe, but its pushing it a bit.

I don't know if this is practicable, but could you, in the next twelve months obtain a teaching qualification, that way you may be able to do some volunteer work teaching english up country, I have heard of organisations that do this. This might help you get a twelve month visa - you would still need to do visa runs.
How about volunteer organisations in N. America?

Just an idea

have to agree ,going all that way for a year, you will be kicking yourself if you dont visit the neighbouring countries,Vietnam is well worth a visit.
As for money ,you will never have enough, especially if a b.g gets her claws into you.i would try and set as much up in an emergancy reserve fund as you can,as you will never know what will happen from day to day while your in LOS,remember even paradise comes at a price

About accomodation, you can get an apartment for 5000bath/month +water and electricity.. i had an apartment this summer, and it was perfect. Only 1 room, but with toilet and shower, and a small kitchen out on the balcony..

I agree that 18 000/month is maybe to be a little bit optimistic..
But if you make your own food and dont drink to much in the bars it can go. But i think it will be boring not being able to explore the country without have to think about money all the time.

I think, travelling around, you need about 1000 USD per month minimum. Enjoy your stay, get some experience, spend the money, when it is worth and go home, when you run out of money.

Take it from me...I'm yalking from experiance....
Celebrate your graduation by having a wild time abroad...therefore...take out a loan or credit card and try things you probably couldn't in Canada...
Yeah..you might create a mountain of debt in the meantime, but once you start Fulltime work, it will be very hard to take extended period off unless your your own boss.

Totaly agree! make you'r parents or someone help you take a loan at the bank, since it might be a problem to do it yourself unless you have a guaranteed income when you get back.

Im hope to be taking 150,000/200,000bt with me for a month, But I plan to party hard while im there, I spent 100,000bt in 10nights there and that was not including flights or accom in low season But this time ill be watching the cash, If I was you I would not be able to stay in los on that amount of money, Unless you plan to chill nearly all the time and maybe go out to a bar once a week, Eat at the cheap places where the thais do, Use public transportation as a means of getting around, Then maybe you can get 6months out of your money, But it will be a bit of a struggle but could all so be a good experience.

I totally dissagree with the idea of getting into debt to have a holiday.. People are working simply to service thier credit cards and debt is terrible thing and a very bad habit to get into while young.

For the visa's you could almost certianly get a triple entry tourist visa.. This is 3x60 days with each entry being extendible for 1900 baht for another 30 days.. Essentially 2 visa runs over the border and ex 1900 baht and you have approx 9 months.

On money I would have to say WAY under for the time you wish to visit.. I spent that much in 6 week vacations (spending madly though) and as a full time expat would spend that in 3 months living here. Perhaps it would be possible to live very frugally or upcountry but how much fun is to have to watch every baht.

Its possible with 18000 bath a month. But as said before if you want to go party sometimes a little less. If you don`t stay in tourist areas like phuket, pattaya etc. then its much cheaper.
Would go to laos, vietnam, cambodia also. (by train its not expensive).
However, it will be a trip you will remember the rest of your life.
(at least it was for me)

Some people spend way too much, like 150,000 in one month is just an insane amount in Thailand. If you dropped the bar girls im sure you would see a huge saving.

When I go in June for two months 3k euro is plenty for me thats excluding flights but includes travel and accomadation while over there.

I've worked out my first months travel and accomoadation will cost me 150 euro at most and then food doesnt cost much and 3 buckets of whiskey a night doesnt cost too much either then you have during the day maybe some shopping and bottles of water with some snacks, I just dont see how some of you guys spend so much.

I bring sex to Thailand!, much better!

But that 3k Euro is still approx +-75k per month.. Far more realistic spending amount than 18k

MMMM... Well how about 100,000bt in 10nights which I did in low season without buying any presents

First off though you dont spend any of your money on BGs, Which if I was to stay with one each night it would cost me around 40,000bt(Including BFs) lets say, And then I would pay for there drinks for the night and something to eat, Now you have your GF with you so I presume she takes 3k with her aswell? So you wont have to buy drinks for two people all the time and thats another reason why I would spend more than you is because a lot of the time ill be paying for a BG aswell

You say your accom and travel for the first month costs 150euro(7,500bt) Well mine is going to cost me around 40,000bt(800euro's) but I like my comfort, And there's no way I would sleep in a shack on the beach or anything like that and I also like to be beside the action which costs more, Plus you said you drink them buckets of whiskey, Well I tried them in phi phi in a few different place's and there more like drinking buckets of water, I like the real stuff

See my idea of a holiday might not be the same as you, I work my bollocks off all year round, So when I get a chance to go on holiday I like to just forget about everything and I dont like having to worry about money because that would just kill the fun for me, Another thing is if I get hit by a bus 2more I cant take it with me so I might as well enjoy it while I have the chance

Nice philosophy ally.Same as me,I hate to be watching the cash on holiday.
And you are young enough to start saving for your future after you get LOS out of your system. If you ever do that is

Cost of Living

When I was younger I went to Greece and managed to live on around £5 a day including food and accomodation. It was great fun if you like water and lay off the booze and don't eat at all on some days. What made it good though was that in those days many people were in the same position.

My problem with this proposed expedition it that it is hard to live on £5 a day when everyone else is spending £50 a day. It simply will not be enjoyable.

How someone can live on £100 a month in Patong is quite beyond me. I have seen the accomodation at THB 5,000 per month and it is hardly comfortable or particularly safe. You would be better off on a tent!

The reality is that Patong is expensive. It might be possible to live on THB 500 per day somewhere else in Thailand but not in Patong. I would venture to suggest that the absolute minimum amount required for a modest trip to Thailand is around £500 per month.

Mac

I prefer this, http://www.phuketdir.com/greenhouse/ ,more then staying in a tent...
Clean, safe and all i needed for 6 weeks.. Bought a frying pan and a ricecooker for a couple of houndred bath. Food at the market costs nothing..
So if you want, you can live cheap even in Patong.

It is just your own needs that puts the limit. I wasnt there for party only, so i maybe have a different wiew of seeing it.
But i had the best time in my life...

Hi Ally your talking about a fcukin good holiday and believe me every BM knows where you are coming from but this guys talking about survival and living like a native each to his own I guess.

If you live really cheap and if you're a student you may be used to no money you can do it no problems.

Agree with Nam and Cambodia would be a shame to spend all that time in one place.
