Drunk driving may be dangerous. This is not Thailand specific.

Seven drown as boat sinks off Samui
KOH SAMUI: Seven people have drowned and 10 are still missing after a boat returning to Koh Samui after a full moon party on Koh Pha-ngan sank early this morning
Speaking with the Gazette at midday today, Pol Col Arkom Saisamai, Superintendent of Samui Police Station, told the Gazette that about 40 passengers were aboard the Sea Breeze on a return trip to Koh Samui at about 5 am, when the overloaded boat started to take on water.
The trip from the Koh Pha-ngan, famed for its all-night full moon parties, to Koh Samui usually takes about 20 minutes.
Col Arkom told the Gazette that the seven victims were three Thais, an American man, an Israeli woman and two other foreign victims who have yet to be identified.
“About 10 people are still missing. The Marine Police and other officers are searching for them now.
“The injured survivors have already been transfered to Koh Samui Hospital, but none were seriously injured,” Col Arkom said.
He added that the victims had most likely been drinking and had little sleep, both factors that would have contributed to their deaths.

I hated that ride!
They let you wait all night and people who want to get home a bit earlier are stuck! I remember that everybody was fighting to get on the first boat!
And yes overloaded it was! I am not suprised this happened!

In 2001 I went to Phi Phi in one of the fast, twin 250bhp engine speedboats (Bubpavaree) when the sea was rough...did it slow the crew down? NOT A CHANCE! we were going like effin crazy. I nearly spewed my liver up the skipper was a bloody lunatic and regularly hit 4500-5500 rpm(Nearly flat out). I thought the whole thing was way too fast for a 'leisure cruise'. I nearly kissed the ground when I got back to the marina at Phuket.

Same here, went to Phi Phi with a 3x V6 Speedboat. I believe they said that the boat could go in 50 knots, which is about 90km/h. At first is was quite fun, untill we got further out hitting the rough sea.

Heard on the news that the steering shaft snapped causing the boat to swerve then flip.Hell of ride.I wonder if there are any regulations pertaining to safety inspections? If not there should be as it is a tourist boat.
