Introducing Social_Norm
8 weeks to go until my 3rd trip to LOS.
I have not yet been to MTB but will be there this trip!
Although I have been visiting this forum for some time, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting other BM's and socialising at MTB!
I have even posted some photos in my "member's photo gallery" so if anyone is curious about the newcomer, you can see me and some BG's I have met on previous trips.
I will be staying in Karon so I guess tuk tuk is the best means of transport from Karon to Patong.
Can someone let me know how much it should cost and where should I ask the driver to take me?
Paul.

Hi and welcome to the board Social Norm. I browsed through your photos earlier today.
I am not up to date with tuk tuk fares, but I guess it cost about 200-250 baht for oneway. Just tell him you want go to Bangla road and you will end up in the nightlife area.

The strange thing is that Geir is often quoted 200 baht (tuk tuk) for a 5 min ride within Patong. Many motorbike taxi drivers ask for 40-50 baht now, epecially those located in the middle of Bangla. In these cases, I walk up to Tai Pan and take a taxi from there instead (20 baht).
(No, I dont use taxi often but the last time was when we had flooding and I had to do service on the motorbike)

Then you should have seen us at MTB Grand Prix, a tuk tuk filled with fat bastards, amazing he even made it up the hill
I am convinced if Geir had been on for that he'd have to push...

Hi Paul,
I dont know if you have already paid for your hotel, or if you totally love Karon, but if you are going to spend quite a lot of time in Patong at the night time, then the 400 baht you would spend on tuk-tuks per day could go towards a really nice hotel in Patong , and then you dont have to travel back and forwards either
Up to yoooouuu !

Good advice Mike, it's better if you want to hang out at Karon to rent a motorbike and ride over for the day once you hit Patong nightlife you'll be pissed you're staying at Karon.

I like to stay in Karon. I don't want to be in "the scene" all the time...
I always rent a motorbike to get over the hill, 150-200 bath a day. You can also use it in the day to go to Kata beach for example, wich is my favourite.
The only downside is that you cannot drink so much while being in the bar.
But Karon also, have nice bars, if you don't want to go to Patong every night. Closer buy I sometimes went to the "Phuket-bar" in Kata on the mainroad to Phuket, not the beach road. 5 minutes from Karon -center. There are 2 bars next to each other, and on 2 occasions I found some nice young girls there.

2 occations?
Try every occation in Patong.
I rest my case
Sad thing is I don't need to find any girls though, takes a little fun out of it but rewarding in other areas.
Guess Marc would say there is always ST...

Yes JH, that is true. There is much more choice in Patong. That is the only reason, I go there except to go to my favourite restaurant "coconut".
And MT bar of course....
But in the Kata-Karon area, if you know where to look, many girls. I only visited this bars twice by the way. On the 2nd occasion THE stunner was busy, and I took 2 nd choice , who was very nice too....
The day i arrive in Kata or Karon, I first go there, and if exceptionally, there is nothing to my tast I move further on.
I rarely find in one bar in Patong, more then one cutie I like. And I have to look quit around to find the kind of girl that attrackts me!
On two visit in that bar, there were at least 3! So if you want a cuttie for the first night, it is rather convenient. When i came back the 2 nd time after 8 months, different girl, but they managed again to have a at least 1 or 2 stunners!
One of my Dutch friends, who stay in Karon for months, if he wants a girl, first looks there (he is a lazy guy, like myself) then only move further, if that is necessary

Actually I have never barfined a BG nor would I put much effort into finding one at a bar, in Patong or otherwise.
Give me a disco and a FL any day and thats another story, bar's are cool tho but I do not go there with the intent to find a girl, rather to relax and have a chat with friends.
Seen quite a few cute ones at bars though but it's just more of them at Tiger, Tai Pan and Banana and a lot less obvious feel about it
Never say never though, for the moment I'm more then happy with what I've got

Links with Karon
Thanks Mike and JH for the tip. I know you are right but the guy who owns the dive shop and guesthouse where I stay is a personal friend and I quite like Karon.
Tin Tin, on the motorbike question, what are the chances of getting into trouble for being over the limit on alcohol? Last year, I got my tilak to drive me everywhere. I found it much more comfortable to sit behind her and hang on rather than drive myself

Hi Paul,
The alcohol limit and the police are the least of your worries. That would be a fine, and at the very worst, a short trip to the monkey house.
If you are even trying to weigh up how much grog you can have before you set out on your motorbike then just forget it.
It is dangerous enough going out stone cold sober never mind having a few drinks on board.
I ALWAYS hire big bikes when I go to Thailand, and everyone who knows me knows I drink like a fish, but when i have a bike, i wont even get drunk the night before. Its not worth it.
Also, by the sounds of it, it seems like you arent a regular motorbike rider back in the uk, so you are putting yourself even more at risk.
I reckon most accidents with motorbikes and falangs occur when they are going round corners. Its very difficult to come off in a straight line. Gravel and diesel on the roads (have you seen how road worthy the trucks are !) make it very dangerous.
The road to Karon can be like the Wacky Races.
Hire a tuk tuk.
Ask Marc26 how much he hurt after his little incident. And that was a minor one
