Listen mate, I have a GSOH (At least I think so ) I just dont find labeling all northern irish people as thieve' as funny(even as a joke) as some people might take offence to it, Especially at this time, Anyway im just telling you the way I see it.

I have more important things on my mind though, Just got my tickets today, Leaving for los on the 31st of march at 1805

Credit Cards in LOS

Hi Jonny

My MBNA Card will not work in LOS. I rang MBNA and apparently the Thailand clearing system only accepts "recognised" cards. My MBNA card is not recognised by the ATM machine although it can be used to pay hotel bills. I always take three credit cards with me anyway. One to use, one for emergencies (when I have overspent my daily cash limit) and one for the suitcase in case the other two are stolen.

The other thing that MBNA told me was that most credit cards have to be "authorised" to be used abroad. I did not know this and thought perhaps it was just flannel. But it might be an idea for your mate to check with the bank in any case.

Mac

I always call the card company before I travel to let them know I will be using it abroad, and where. I think that is a good tip.

The cards have one big problem. The bank charge 300 bath costs, anytime I get money out of the wall here. If I bring Euro s, they dont charge anything, but then you have to walk with money around, wich is not so safe....

The fee depends on the card issuer, if fee at all.

I had a 200 baht fee on my card when I moved here, so I used to withdraw e.g. 40,000 bath each time and put it into a local bank account with ATM card. In that case, you still get an excellent rate.

And for your friend Jonny, I suggest he get a PLUS or VISA Electron add-on to his ATM card and then it will work for sure.

I have PLUS on my Thai ATM-card and I could withdraw money in Sweden and Malaysia without any problems at all.

you may have problems with visa cards too.

When a shop merchant makes a contract with a credit card company and installs the online device, he has the possibility to define the region codes, he will accept. The region codes are charged differently, e.g. european visa cards are charged more than asean (thai, malaysia). Since the shop owner has to pay the charge (normally he charges you as an addon), he normally only will allow visa cards with the lowest percentage (e.g. 3 %), since he cannot check real upgrade, when you give your card to him. Therefore your european card doesnīt work in a gold store, but works at lotus.

with atmīs there is no problem, since atmīs give you the money net, they can charge the additionial costs afterwards to your account. The shopowner instead charges the gross value, since the additional costs are payed from his business account.
