Going to thailand for the first time any advice?

I was going to go with a friend but she bailed at the last minuet. I decided to go anyways, ill be going by my self. I'm 18 years old, and was wondering if i could get into clubs and bars at this age? So basicly im just looking for advice? What city should i stay the most at? I have a budget of 5000$ so i plan on staying the full 30 days. I really have no idea how thailand is like so any information about it would be cool. How are the girls? What are the best places to be in thailand? Which hotels are the best?

Thanks...

info on 1st time

hi dude
your be fine in Thailand I went around that age and I had the time of my life
no problems with clubs maybe if your Thai but not if your a tourist
you sound like you have enough money to have a good time so you don't need to live like a student on a tight budget
maybe you should avoid Bangkok being its your first time and your on your own with lots of cash
personally I would get to bkk and get a taxi to pattaya ,spend a few days there then fly to phuket
for a week or so. then maybe go samui for a week up 2 you
you wont be alone for long people seam really friendly all over Thailand
and you could always meet up with some BMS for a drink they will give you some info where to stay what
to do etc
have a wicked time and take lots of photos for us

Depends on what you are looking for Thailand is great if you are single their are plenty of people to hook up with and party.

Phuket is a versatile island, you can hang out at the beach by day and go clubbing at night and it's very up to date by western standards.

Bangkok you can see in 3 days and this is enough IMHO.

It very much depends on what you want to see and do, if you want to travel all the time or just hang out in one or two places.

If you are going for 30 days, I suggest 3 days Bangkok followed by a 7-10 days tour to Ayutthaya, Sukotai - Chiang Mai - Golden Triangle. For the rest go on beach hollidays in Koh Samui or Phuket.

Pattaya ??

Like was said before read read read, keep your budget to yourself but i would not recommend pattaya for an 18 newbie travelling alone.
Maybe go to Patong and go to the bars of the board members and ease into it.
The north is worth looking at also.

Have fun, don't fall in love and keep your wits about you.

Advice for newbies'

1)Don't believe sob stories, you will quickly part with your money if you do.

2)Dont get involved emotionally, tell the girls you just want to butterfly and have fun only on holiday.

3)Your budget can soon get swallowed up in los, spennding 5 - 10,000 baht a day is easily done, watch your money.

4)Keep away from the beaches at night, especially places like pattaya and patong where you will find ladyboys and ladies offering *******s. Things can get nasty if you say no.

5)Don't book hotels through travel agents, you can get a better rate in person, many hotels can be as cheap as 500 baht a night on average.

6)Never ring the bell in any beer bar or Agogo bar unless you are prepared to buy everyone in the bar a drink.

7)Read this forum carefully, trawl through many past posts to get ideas of prices for many things, girls, taxis etc...

8)When it come to money, try not to keep all your eggs in 1 basket, try to have some travellers checks, cash and if possible a credit card for the ATM.

9)Always keep money you dont need in a safe, not wise to carry say - 15,000 baht for the night when you only need maybe 5000

10)Despite what you may hear, don't carry your passport around with you, keep in the safe, it is a good idea to colout photcopy the pages including the page with the entry stamp just in case police ask you for it.

11)Always a good idea for a newbie who may not know their way around and more importantly - the way to the hotel to obtain the hotel card with address on, many have small maps on the back, ask the people at the hotel to write the address in thai on the back if the card dont have that already.

12)Again regarding money, I usually spread my money for the night into different pockets, if you lose some or a pickpocket takes it, this way you won't lost the lot in 1 go.

Above all, have fun and enjoy every single moment.

Sound Advice

I just wish I was 18 and going to Patong! You will have the time of your life, but be careful, a little street wise and keep the brain in gear. Follow BB's advice.

oooh the possibilities!!!!

Great advice BB!!

Being 18 with a nice budget will allow you to have a great month in Thailand. If I were you I would do the following travel route.

Stay at Koh San road in Bangkok for a few nights. You will likely meet up with some interesting travels who you may end up spending a week or so travelling with. That is the great thing about Thailand, there are so many people traveling alone or in small groups that you will make friends easily and from all over the world. Just look at this board for example!
Seeing as you have lots of time, I would make sure to see as much as I can. I have never been up north, as I am more of a beach person>
For that I would recommend, one week or ten days in Phuket, head over to Phi Phi (dont know about the recovery efforts there now)1-2 weeks in Koh Samui, heading over to Koh Phagnan (SP?) where the full moon parties are. This should be right up you alley. Mabye try Koh lek or some other small island for a few days.
You will be able to travel by ferry and bus most of the time as you have the time to do so. Check into airlines like Air Asia as they have very cheap flights to phuket etc. Sometimes spending an extra 1000baht is worth it if you save yourself a day or half a day.
Best advice though is to read over this board, do some searches or ask for specific recommendations. I planned my last trip to Thailand strictly through the info I got on this board. It is absolutely invalueble. Lonely planet books are ok for a brief description but this board will answer every little question you have.
Good luck planning your trip. I am actually doing a month Thailand trip in September this year. Let me know how yours goes!

All the best,

Ashley

They will come to you.. Just sit down and order a beer and they will show up in seconds....

About safety... Same as in your own town.. Stay in areas where there are people... Dont go in to dark alleys...

My best advice is to go to MTB and hook up with the other BM`s that are there.. They will give you good advices and show you around.

be shure - if you go in a GO-GO, you HAVE the attention of the girls - especial if you sit in the front.
It is safe in the night. You can walk around in the night. There are a lot of people around, also in the late night/morning.

Haha the only other question is about gogo girls you're coming to the right place mate.

Go check out the gogo's in Bangkok in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy also Patpong is essential newbie viewing you won't have any problems just make eye contact and she will come and sit with you after she has finished dancing or ask the mamasan and tell her which girl you like.

When she sits down with you you will have to buy her a lady drink usually about 120bht then just start talking. If you want to take her away for short time usually about 2 - 3hrs or long time all night you will have to pay the barfine to the bar if gogo about 500 bht then you will also have to pay the girl just ask her how much for ST or LT don't be shy because they aren't then it's back to the hotel or disco first and that's about all you need to know apart from the obvious.

A nice broad smile works best, a sure fire way to get the girl to approach you, many will either crouch over by you if you are sitting near the stage and introduce themselves, if not they may make a hand gesture mimicking a drink.

Bear in mind that Agogo's can cost bigger bucks and you can get very pretty ladies from Beer Bars (Open air style bars)

The bar fine in Agogo's is usually 500 baht and up...girls can easily ask for 1,500 baht longtime and upwards, especially in top class establishments.

I would advise you to visit Agogo's on occasion and spend time in beer bars in between as the bar fine in the open air bars is usually 200 baht , longtime with the lady is usually 1,000. Some may ask for more though depending on different things.

As you are young, I am guessing you may be handsome which should help your cause no end. You will probably have girls round you like flies to sh1t, Even more so in discos where you can find many freelancer girls who go with guys for cash but don't work at a bar....saving you cash on the barfine.

Although many of us have never had a girl steal from us, please be careful about leaving cash on view in your room when you get the lady back, especially if she is a freelancer, ie: you have no way of tracing her unlike a beer bar or Agogo, in which case you could go and see the Papasan or Mamasan and complain.

Always a good idea for you to ask the girl if she has an ID card with her, try to take only those that have them and make them hand them over to reception at your hotel, most hotels do this as standard but some don't.
This will safeguard you a little more and will be less likely to encounter problems.

Get yourself a thai phrase book, worth learning a few simple phrases, hello, how are you ? etc...
If you are thinking about visting Patpong in bangkok, be careful...well known for having a few rip off bars which claim ''no cover charge for show'' then you get the bill and realise there is a charge.
Visit the bangkok tonight forum as you can cream loots of info on which Agogo bars are straight up with you and those that are dodgy.

Thai people smile in pretty much all situations including anger, they also do not like to lose face, DO NOT under any circumstances stamp you feet and show anger.
Thai people hate this with a passion and will think less of you, much better to smile whilst calmly explaining the nature of the problem and asking if they can help sort it out.
There have been a fair few recent exapmples recently of what can happen.
2 british backpackers sitting in a restaurant end up getting killed by a thai police seargent, it is rumoured that the english guy was angry about thai's in the restaurant staring at his gf and making comments.
The right thing to do is pay the bill and walk away in that situation, the bf got angry, the policman tried to intervene and calm him down, it is alledged that he chose to spit in the policemans face and also punched him...he and his gf paid the ultimate penalty ...with their lives.

Remember to keep a cool head in all situations and NEVER fight any thai people.

Going back to the bg scene, not a good idea to tell them it's your 1st time in thailand, if you look closely you may see dollar signs in their eyes and they may feel they have a guy who don't know the ropes.
Tell them you are on the 3rd visit or something like that.

Don't touch thai people on the head, although you may be able to caress a bg and stroke her head, espceially if you have established a rapport with her, don't touch people you don't or hardly know on the head...this is a big insult over there as the head is seen as a sacred part of the body.

The soles of the feet are the most lowly part on the other hand so don't get pointing the soles at thai's , like when in a bus station sitting opposite thai people and maybe you like to slouch with your feet up....DONT

Never point the soles of your feet at an immage of bhudda, if you visit a temple (wat) don't touch the immage either, kneel in front of bhudda with your feet behind you inside temples. Don't take pics inside without asking permson 1st, never try to take a pic inside an Agogo bar either, you may ended up badly beaten and bruised for doing so.

Unlike my country (England) where most people could not give a stuff about the royal family, in thailand the opposite is true.
Never deface ir tear up anything with the kings image in front of thai's, like the bank notes. Never speak bad about the thai royals either, thai people are highly devoted to the king.

I hope some of what i said will be of help, there are many sites and forums which you can get info from.
http://www.whorist.com/
http://www.bahtbus.com/
http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/
http://www.bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/

And many more other, be wary of your surroundings and what you are doing, try to have some trust in others but not too much, don't let your guard down.

Have fun in los, you will probably love it so much it will take over your life like the rest of us...don't worry this is perfectly normal

Somehow they have a fine detection system and can usually smell my bullshit fast... Always amazes me how when 3 of you are walking down a soi and one is fresh of the plane the girls will always grabbing at the newbie..
