Cost of Bringing a Computer With Me?

Is it a real hassle to bring a desktop PC into the country? I was thinking of bringing one as a gift after seeing the disappointing prices for PCs in Bangkok.

If I bring a receipt in with me from an ebay purchase would that be enough? What kind of fees would there be for a computer worth say 8000 - 12000 baht?

Why a desktop as they are so bulky to carry. Why not get a laptop, I'm sure you can purchase one on ebay for cheap. If you bring it along with you to Thailand there will be no problem nor fee, just say it's your own personal luggage or use, no fees and no questions. If you send it via FEDEX or major shipping company that would only cost little to ship..

Technically theres import duty...

I know lots of people who have walked through the green lane with them..

Electronic goods arte 7% duty but taxes here can be unpredictable.. they can range from the 5 - 30 or so if they feel like it..

Saw a PC in Lotus the other day for B16,000. No idea what the configuration was. Have also seen PC's around the place for B19,000.

Or goto Big C and buy the bits and build it yourself, just built one last week, only price I havnt got is for a processor, but I think they are only about B2,500 or so.

1,400 Case
2,550 Motherboard
1,250 CD ROM
2,300 HDD
2,500 RAM
1,200 KB/MOUSE
3,500 Monitor

The reason I asked is that I have a spare one right here, it will cost me 0 B to give as a gift since it is sitting idle. If its 7% thats just fine, but if it is more then It may not be worth it. I was worried about those "varying rates", which is why I asked.

I saw that typical bottom end PCs ranged around 12-14k Baht w/o monitor, with decend setups capabale of playing games running around 24k Baht (the good deals at Pantip).

Take everything out, you can easily pack the bits into your baggage, and then just buy a case here and put it back together.

That sounds like good advice, and I see the cases there have a lot of cooling built in, which I'm sure is quite necessary. I think I just may do that.

Thanks for all the input.
