The West???
Ok, this may be a stupid question, but oh well...
What exactly is considered "the west" in a global sense?
I've read on here a lot about western mentality, western women, etc... but am unclear if this is relating to a specific region or what...

This is my own opinion of what I would consider to be a 'western' country.
Historically, I'd guess western Europe, north America and Australia. I’d suggest that there are broad similarities between these countries in terms of political systems, religion's, culture and their economies etc. These regions are considered to be well developed, technologically advanced, stable and civilised compared to the rest of the world.
Now any country anywhere in the world that develops and meets at least most of the above criteria could be considered to be a ’westernised’ country.
‘West’ also sounds positive and suggests democracy and prosperity etc, whereas ‘east’ is seen as negative in comparison and perhaps gives thoughts of communism and dictatorships i.e., East Germany, Russia, China etc.

I agreed to some extent, but I don't really think you can say " East" is seen as NEGATIVE in comparision.... But if we're going to discuss POLITICS, it'll be LONG discussions.

I accept that could be seen as a major generalisation. Maybe its more true in Europe ( East vrs West) than maybe anywhere else in the world, hence the current mass exodus of citizens from Eastern European countries into Western European Countries.
West isn’t all positive though. I guess most chaps on here are not overly fond of ‘western’ women compared to their Thai and oriental counterparts!

The answer is actually very simple.
The West is anywhere that is west of the East.

Not sure this is totally correct. The centre is east of the west and also west of the east. So west is west of the centre and very west of the east, and east (on the other hand) is east of the centre and very east of the west.
As for when east meets west, I haven't a clue
East sounds more positive when it comes to women:
Eastern delights
Eatern promise

Back to the original thread.....
I always thought that anywhere east of India was the far east, the near east was turkey, egypt, etc. and anything in between was the middle east, so I suppose the line runs through Greece or somewhere.

trough Greece or somewhere???
Russia is East ? I think everyone in West agree
Please comment are these following definitions correct?
Japan is Far East?
Where is Australia and even more unknown location New Zealand (my favourite place btw, I was happy when visited Auckland and surroundings, particulary geyser place - it is difficult to find in the world a lake, where water is boiling - 100 degrees Celsius... )
Where is Finland - East or West???
Estonia is 80 kms south from Finland btw and we are good friends with Finnish people, especially on
Regards,
Baltic
