Depends, do you want to be near other farangs??
Do you want coast or inland.
Why not initially move around, and then you can decided for yourself on something more permanent.

Good idea Aussie Dollar. It shouldn't be hard to find a place to rent in Kamala as the place is dead after the tsunami. You have the beach, enough bars to keep you happy and plenty of English speakers. I have a nice little bungalow that cost me 5k baht a month. 1 large bedroom with ensuite, small kitchen/dining room.

You might want to check out Chiang Mai! Tons of Expats there. The people are nice, and it is dirt cheap. If being on the coast is not a factor, I would definitely check it out! Very interesting place. There is a big university there, and so a lot of foreigners come through there, and some stay. It doesn't have a big BG scene, but don't worry, there are lots of non-BG TGs, very cute, and they will find you!
If you like a laid-back town with a great beach, then LaMai might be the place.
Kamala, Chiang Mai, Lamai! Check them all out! See what suits you! See who you meet there!

Agree with Jaybee on Chiang Mai.
If you're not too bothered with being by the sea, Chiang Mai is a great little town and cheap as chips. People are even friendlier there than in Phuket. The best thing about it though is the surrounding countryside. Get on a bike or 4wd and just go exploring.
I know a couple of expats who moved up to Chiang Mai from Phuket and love it.
Not saying its for everyone but something you might want to consider.

I have a friend who bought a condo in Rayong. Never been there. Quieter than Pattaya, but if you can go there let's say once a week for partying.

Chiangt mai would be to boring for a long time for me....
Kamala , i have not such a good memory. I like Kata, because the beach is beautiful, but tourists are getting small houses rather up in price...
I know a girl who rented something opposite the zoo for 4000 Bath with 2 bedrooms. Simple but clean.
The sea not too far away, with nice restaurants with locals, and you are between Phuket town and the touristplaces!

I stayed in Lakeview Apartments, in Kathu…It was 5,000 a month…Excellent value and totally hassle free. Falang owner and never a worry.
-In the middle of the island, which could be a hassle if you wanted to be able to stagger home drunk every night, or be walking distance from the sea…But if looking for somewhere a bit quite, it was great. Also, I think it is good not to live so close to the action (no easy access for univited visitors!) if planning to stay long-term....

I lived nearby Lakeview apartments and I know some friends who stayed there. Its rather nice and the price is pretty good. 5 - 10 minutes to Patong, couple of minutes to Tesco and Big C.

I like Kamala a lot, it is quiet, not far away from Patong if sometimes you want to meet Nicke and some BM's or make shopping. Kamala has been hardly hut by tsunami, but everything should be rebuilt now and you would be able to find a good deal for a rental there. If you take a tuk tuk from kamala to Patong, it's 200 bath (one way), but you can also rent a car or a motorbike and you will save money.
Another place in Phuket where many expats live is the area of nai Harn and Rawai. Many houses for long term rental there, maybe a bit expensive for your budget, but if you need a good and professional help, feel free to contact Wellta and i am sure she will do her best to find the best for your budget. I rented a house last Feb and I used her services, it was great and I still keep in touch with her.
Her website is http://www.houseinphuket.com/
Nai harn - Rawai are in the South of Phuket, it's rather quiet but you will find easily bars, sauna, restaurant everywhere, and by car, 30 minutes away from Phuket Town where you will find big supermarkets (Big C, Lotus tesco) and probably better prices than on the coast.
If you want to know more, just ask. many BM's here ready to give you advices
