caught at the airport - prison ?
sorry, have to postpone my hoiday...
last sunday, about 4:30 in the morning (GMT), I got a call from my GF at Bangkok airport. She returned from Australia. On arrival, somebody was givin g her a little bag and told her, he/she will be back in one minute. As it happened, there was something illegal in the bag, she was questioned by police and put into prison. She has a lawyer, but thinks she has to stay about 2 weeks in prison.
Has anybody experience about
- how long it takes to get out, the legal process
- getting out on bail
- good lawyers for this kind of procedure
- how to take influence from Europe (email, lawyer, amnesty int ?)
- getting information, what really happened ?
I had a similar experience about 10 years ago, when I stayed in Malaysia. A swiss friend of mine, who was married to a malay at that time (marriage ended after one year), wanted to return to Zurich and bought a ticket from a German living in Philipines, who could not travel because of familiar stress. She was caught in Singapore airport and got 30 days of Changi prison. I happed to fly back two days later, heard of her story and bought her out for about 1000 SD. So she could leave prison after weekend...

Are we talking drugs here ? If so....
As she was caught at Bangkok airport - quite simply she's done for.
The thais's have some of the harshish penalties for that so I don't fancy her chances- the best she can hope for is a royal pardon one day and she may be lucky enough to get out earlier than what will be a very long sentence.
Trusting somebody you don't know in this way was a very stupid thing to do - especially at Don Muang

What was in the bag and I will give an estimate of her stretch.. Buying out once you get to the cop shop is highly unlikey these days for drugs (murder seems easier to buy off than drugs in last 3 - 5 years)...
I know someone caught for 30g of coke and is looking at about 25 years.. girl with 200 Ya Ba got life (3 years ago) woman caught at northern Cambodia border with only 5 ya Ba 12 years..
Anything that is more than personal use (couple of pills or a very small amount of weed / dope) will be looking at multi year sentances..
As to the I was just holding it for someone story, they hear it every time, I dont think it will hold any water whatsoever in the current political climate..
Is she Thai or Farang ?? If she gets bail for any amount that can be paid do it and get the fcuk out the country.. Southern routes would be tough but crossing the Mekong to Laos would be a doddle.. New passport in Vientienne and first plane out of asia never to return..

You can just get caught in the moment and especially if you are just off a flight. If the story is really true then the airport security cameras can surely find the truth behind it.

I had no problem bringing xanax and valium through both ways. Did not have a prescription on hand either.

Bring the actual prescirption with your prescription drugs in moderate / normal amounts and you will be fine..
Iremark, they are stepping up on the xanex and valium.. prices have risen and you can get in moderate amounts of trouble (fine etc) for even moderate amounts (1000 etc) ifg you dont have a script.. One or two for flight anxiety would probably not create any issue I would think..

I will be carrying prescriptions this year especially because I intend on posting quite a few back. We discussed this on a thread going back a few months and you advised me to do so.
No longer 5-10baht for one?

I'd only be looking to buy 200-300 generic xanax if possible. What is the view of the police if caught with a large amount of xanax or any controlled substance? Would I be best posting 50-100 home each time rather than the whole lot?
Thanks,
Mark.

I am quite sure, what she is telling me ist right. I will go to LOS definitively in 4 weeks, if she is still in prison I can see her and decide what strategy to take. Otherwise we can spend a happy week in a 4 star hotel on Phuket. The only problem is, that all the money she earned in Australia will go to the attorneys. In the meantime I am already contacting a law office in Bangkok to make me an abstract of the incident and possible outcome.
By the way, my working collegues were happy, that I can finish now some projects earlier...

To gregor200
As other people have said sounds abit doggy.
If it is drugs save your money on the lawyers because its a guilty verdict anyway.
go and look for another girlfriend not so stupid.
just think yourself lucky you where not with her at the time, or you could be spending the wrong sort of vacation at the bangkok hilton.
Good luck anyway.

I guess the title of this thread should be changed to
"Caught at the airport = prison"

Exactly...
The Oz girl caught going into Bali just got handed down 20.. Everyone seems so shocked but taking drugs into Indo could have been much worse.. If there is anywhere not to mess about its there...

Latest Information
my gf called me just now...
I asked her what really happened and she told me: She went to toilet after picking up her baggage. Because it was big, she left it outside the toilet. It ist forbidden to leave your baggage unattended. When she went out, a policeman was waiting beside her bag and questioned her.
By the way, she doesnīt like Bangkok Hilton very much and hopes to be out in 2 weeks.

Your reluctance to tell us what was in the bag and also the way the story all changes sounds to me like she is not as innocent as she says..
If she got caught with drugs they will nearly never give any credence to a 'holding someones bag' story..
Yes people in jail do get to make phone calls.. In Phuket jail you even get to keep your mobile..

Yes, this is what she told me. It seems quite normal, that women go to the toilet on airport, because they donīt like the toilet on the airplane so much, especially asian women, who are accustomed to sqat toilets. Maybe the rules are a bit harsh, I donīt know. I will email TAT and ask for it. But she seems quite sure to be out in 2 weeks.

First, she called me from the mobile phone of her brother, yesterday her mother brought her her mobiile phone into prison. So she can go to the toilet to make a call.
Sorry, for the small flow of information, but on the first call, I was in working in Bulgaria, sleep drunk at 4:30 in the morning after a good bottle of wine in the night, she was still on the airport, therefore I asked her to call me next day again. The next day I was working at the factory still in Bulgaria and could not ask to many questions. Then after returning back from Bulgaria, I called her brother, who cannot speak English and asked him kow she was doing...
