Troubles

I'm wondering myself how many guys had once troubles in thailand. Its not about girls, I mean something like someone stole your passport, or money or drink spiking, robbery etc.

I had troubles once in BKK. Some falang stole my passport while i was doing my business on the toilet. Fortunately when he took it i had a fast reaction. and kicked him, then he attacked me and I went from defense into attack. As he realised that i was gonna take my passport back he fled. i followed him into a house and then he ran to a balcony where a dead end was awaiting him. I thought now i'll catch this bastard. but he jumped off the balcony and screamed up. it was quite high so i thought i will be more careful than he. i made the jump well but unfortunately i lost time. it was enough time for him to jump into a taxi and dissapeared.
This didnt bother me too much, i just went to my embassy and got new papers. after some sessions with the police and the immigration office this affair was past.
In my case i have to blame myself because i went out with my passport into the nightlife (which happened due to a missunderstanding between my friend and me) = BIG MISTAKE

When i went to the immigration office i saw so many poor bastards which lost everything they had, money and passport. i still had my money and the ID card from my country. i only stayed half an hour there and there were about 5 guys. Troubles like this must be happening every day. and this makes me wondering if any guys of you have to share similar stories.

hi patong boy

it seems a lot of crime is commited by other fellow tourists, rather than by thai,s whan you are in thailand you are supposed to carry your passport at all times so there is always the risk of it getting stolen
theives sell passports for good money to clone identity, so there is probably 2 of you going around now!

Personally I wouldn't even consider carrying my passport out with me for one second unless I was renting a motorbike.

Yes you are supposed to carry your passport always with you. But i did only on this particular night. When i go out and get drunk its madness to carry my passport with me.

If police would come and ask me, i would tell them to come my hotel and check it. But they never asked me during my stays.

You should never give your passport when renting a motorbike, You should just give them a photocopy!!

My mate was lucky over in spain 2yrs ago, Him and another one of my mates rented a jeep over there, And they were acting the bollox with another couple of lads in another jeep they had met over there, But they had a bad accident, The jeep flipped and threw them from it before going over a cliff, No Bullshit!!!

And they were very lucky to only have minor injuries but more importantly they still had there passports and got straight out of spain and back home before anyone realised what happened, If they had not had there passports they were fu*ked because they had no car licence (They rented the jeep on a bike licence) and no insurance, So they would of had to pay for the jeep to be replaced and if they couldnt pay it, Then they would be locked up until someone could pay it for them!!

Seriously thats just one story but you can bet your life on it that there's many more out there that didnt turn out so good, Never give your passport to anyone!!

I leave my passport in the safe deposit box, but always carry a photocopy of it.

I got my pocket picked by a LB on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok, funny now but a hassle at the time, and I dread to think of the hassle had my passport been in the same pocket

Well I think it's only fair to pay for damaging something so that isn't a concern for me. I damaged a bike last year in Krabi when I went over the front of it due to drinking too many buckets of Thai whiskey.

Only minor cosmetic damage so it wasnt too bad

This is quiet some organised crime in Thailand....Please do not say it is done by foreigners!

I had a bag stolen out of my bedroom while sleeping in Chiang Mai!!! All this organised by the register-desk, who changed our room, when coming back from trekking! Just the bag they saw we put our money in

In Koh Samui, my digital camera was stolen in my room the last day! They had 30 minutes (it was locked all the time) to steal it while recharging the battery, and they did! Hotel -personel again! They just unlocked and relocked the door!

In Phuket: Motorbike stolen in Kamala while having lunch on the beach. Had to pay the owner 25.000 bath!

You think I am not secure? Forget it! Most of Thai people are honnest, but where there are tourists, like in many countries there is organised crime! Small or big fishes!

And don't walk on Patong-beach at night.......

I was never robbed by a BG. I only once payed one a bike like most of you know, but that was a tG and my only stupid way to loose the green in thailand!

And something else: Beware of your bags at the airport, some people do put things in them!

Only taken my passport out of the safety deposit box to change a travellers cheque.Didn't feel happy about carrying it around for the evening until I got back to the hotel again.
It may be the law,but you won't catch me taking my passport everywhere I go. As has been said,if anyone wants to check they can go to the hotel with me to see the passport.

Patong Boy>> I have a picture of you in my mind ,sitting on the toilet, shorts round your ankles and someones hand snakes under the door for your passport. You have just had a very satisfying crap and need to do the paperwork, what to do,wipe your a$$ or give chase

Yeah and so would I, But pay to replace a Jeep??? Especially not having the money to pay? How do you think they would handle this? First of all you wont be able to leave the country and unless you have really rich parents then you will be banged up for a long time, Just because you handed over your passport

Sounds a bit of a dumb thing to do

I recently had my credit card stolen from a hospital in pattaya.

I had taken my CC due to not knowing wether or not the insurance would cover or not, on the day I was admitted I was advised by the nursing staff that a cashier would come and take my belongings to the safe which I agreed was the right option.

The next morning I was discharged, at the cashier desk was given my insurance documents, passport, some petty cash but no CC !!!!

Alarm bells rang and I questioned as to why and how this could happen, the cashiers were confused and suddenly developed an inability to speak english, the cashier who had come to my room was on a day off so I was informed they would call her at home to find out what they could.

I had a very good friend of mine staying with me that night so she gave them hell for leather in thai which was a help, I had also had visitor in the form of a young girl I had been seeing previously and they tried to suggest that maybe she had stolen it but I insisted that I know for a fact the cashier had taken my CC as I had seen her carefully checklist all items before taking them away.

I went back to my hotel and the advised they would call within 1 hour but 2 hours passed and still nothing, my thai friend called them and again they could not find it, still trying to suggest maybe the visitor had stolen it.
At this point I knew it was time to cancel the card, after doing that I headed back to the hospital to clear up this story of accusations against my visitor who I knew was innocent.

I was keeping my cool but it was difficult, the first thing I did back at the hospital was demand to see the signed receipt, on there was all the items the cashier accounted for including my visa card. I explained that this is proof the cashier had my card and not the visitor to a very red faced cashier.
Eventually I got an apology.

I had monitored my CC activity from a net cafe, but from the admission date 14th May in the hopsital until my leaving los on the 19th May, no fraudulent transactions appeared. On arrival back home in the UK I checked again to find the sum of 1.750 baht on my CC charged to the Levi Boutique.

Called my bank who got to work immediately with investigations, I was still not happy though and then had an idea. I looked up the hospital website to obtain the email address and then sent a letter for the attention of the manager explaining everything and all the circumstances surrounding it.

I also added that if I felt no action was being taken, I would be making this story public with the Pattaya Mail, the very next day I get an email from the cashier manager thanking me for bringing this to their attention and assuring me if there is a thief working there, they will be found and caught.

The cashier who came to my room felt bad about this incident so took it upon herself to visit all 3 of the Levi Boutiques located in pattaya armed with photos of all her co-workers and sure enough 1 of her colleagues had done the deed.

This lady had now been dispensed with and I have had some nice emails from the manager, apologies for the incovenience caused & thanks for bringing the thief to her attention. This girl is apprently sorry for what she did but they all say that once caught. I just hope she learned a lesson from this as I don't like to see anyone out of a job, especially in los.

Happily I have had this money credited back to my account so I have lost nothing, but it just goes to show, just have to be careful almost anywhere and this is a top hospital and not the kind of place I would have expected this to happen.

Your friends were irresponsible and, and due to recklessness and mostly likely drunk driving, they totally destroyed a jeep which someone had to pay to replace. It seems dishonest what they did. It is just as bad as if if they had stolen it, because the owner was left without his jeep!

In the 16 years Thailand I had so far no troubles in LOS. I have the passport and other documents always in the safe of the hotel. If I undertake a trip, then I carry with me only a photocopy.
Which I already said in another Thread, I have my credit card I in a small Safe. If someone try to open with the wrong code or by force, then the credit card are destroyed automatically.
This small safe I bought at the AMEX. I do not believe if this little safe is yet available.

I have never carried my passport with me anywhere in Thailand, and thats a lot of years. Now I keep a laminated copy in the glovebox of the car. If they dont like that, then they can drive out to Chalong with me and see the real one. I think the problem with copies is, that some folks dont copy the page with the arrival stamp and card number.

I would be very surprised if a bike rental company would accept a copy as insurance for the bike.

Mmmm, Can you explain to me what part of my post said they were not irresponsible?
What part of my post said they were not drunk?
What part of my post says they were not dishonest?
What part of my post did I state that the owner was not left without a jeep?
And how the fu*k is it the same as robbing it?

Thanks for stating the obvious JB, You are an extremely intelligent guy

PS: For the record, I could never see myself in there position but if I ever did, I know it would be dishonest and not the right thing to do but if you really could not pay for the damages caused, And you had no way of paying? What exactly would you do? Apoligse? And get locked up in prison until it was payed? Which if you had no way of paying or no family to fall back on, Then that could turn into an awful long time!! Sorry it might be dishonest but I think I would run rather than face a prison sentence, Especially in a foreign country!! And another thing it was the owner of the jeep's fault in the first place for not checking there licence properly before giving 2 17yr olds with a moped licence a jeep, If he had of then none of that would have happened

I tried to leave another passport that I had with me, legitimate one, for a bike in Chiang Mai and the girl looked for the white entry paper and said that you did not come in on this passport and would not give me the bike until I gave her the other passport. I was trying to keep one for cashing travellers cheques/checks.

I do carry photo copies with me and my licence from Oz if on the bike.
The only time that I had something stolen it was my fault, I was drunk as and took a few Fl into my room in Pattaya. All other times no problems but I am very security conscious, not to say that it can’t happen though.
