Yes she can, with limitations
Yes, she can visit many countries in Europe (but not all).
A person who has a visa to visit a European country that is a member of the group of "Schengen" states, in effect has a "Schengen Visa".
Holders of valid Schengen visas (text on the visa reads "valid for Schengen states" in the respective language of the issuing country) or a residence permit of a member state can stay in the entire Schengen area for up to three months per half year (usually without having to go through passport control at internal borders).
Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden have acceded to the Schengen Agreement and are thus Schengen states.
Note that Britain and Ireland are not a Schengen state member. In addition, Schengen states are all the "old" EU member states (with the exception of Britain and Ireland (and Norway and Iceland)). The countries that joined the European Union on 1 May 2004 did not immediately accede to the Schengen Agreement.

If she got a visa for italy then she has a "schengen visa" which allows her to enter all the other "schengen"countries.
more infos see here: http://www.eurovisa.info/SchengenVisa.htm

Did it all the time.. UK is a no no without a visa but much of the rest of mainland Europe is OK.. The fact is Europes borders are so porus and unprotected now it became dumb to do anything else..

The main problem is not the fact that they are 'given' everything they want! The fact is that they can not work legally (Due to both Eu and British laws), so they have to be given state benefits until they case is proven or disproven.
In my view, imagration is a good thing (With some exceptions!) for the Uk, as in twenty years time there wont be enough people working to pay for my or anyone's pension, let alone public services!
I would much rather have people comming in to the country and pay tax and national insurence. Than have 2 or 3 million 'British' people claiming benefits the whole of their lifes, without working a day!
Sorry all about this totally political post!

The police get on one border town and travel to the next.

It's impossible to get in to Wales without a local sponsor. For a fee of £1,000 I would be willing to be that sponsor.
If you try and get in without paying the sponsor, the guards on the turrets (at the border control) will shoot you on site. You might not have heard, but there are currently 10,000 illegal immigrants from England held on Bardsey Island - similar to Guantanemo Bay. All these people are applying for political asylum - but I reckon they'll be machine gunned.

to be honest i dont give a hoot about wales,if i had my way i would get a giant saw and cut it out, stick a giant engine on it and send it out to sea before nucking it,but thats my own opinion.and as for shooting them,i cannot believe they would do anything like that over here.also no i have never heard of that island, plus if they are illegals they are probably getting treated brilliantly, its only people that try to get in legitamately into the uk that are treated like 2nd class citizens.and marc the visa i was told would be very hard to get,i supplied a lot of paperwork and dint even need an interview.it took 6 weeks to get but how i got it only they no.no questions for me or tukta just a straight yes.some people have said to me that as i was there when the tsunami happened and had to visit the british embassy to get new passport as mine was lost during it,that they took a sympathetic look at the application and gave it.i did mention i was there with her during the tsunami.but lots of other people i have been in contact with on the thai visa forums who gave me advice said a hell of a lot of people who applied for visas and mentioned they where there during the tsunami seemed to have got them.
i dont no.i am just happy we got it.

If her Visa is for England, she cannot visit France on that Visa. England, for a variety of reasons, decided not to be a "Shengen" state.
I had thought Visa's for England were granted such that she can also visit Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. I asked my Thai wife, and she stated 15 years ago, when she visited England, she need an additional Visa to go to Scotland (which she stated was easy to get).
We have a TG friend living and working in Ireland (now married) who used to travel from Ireland to England every second weekend on her Irish work Visa. So there are Visas, and there are Visas, and not all are equal, and I suspect a lot depends on the type of English Visa.
Still, from what I have read, it is a lot easier to get a Shengen visa than it is to get an "English" visa. So I think it is possible she could visit mainland Europe, after going through a relatively small amount of administrative work.

a UK visa would not cover her to go to France and as listed above if she doesn't have a multiple entry visa, she wouldn't be allowed back into the UK if she did get a visa for France.
The process to get a visa for France in the UK, will be difficult as well, unless she is married to you.
Referring to the lass in Italy, of course a Schengen Visa does not cover Switzerland on Italy's Northern border, which for some reason always seems to be a favourite of Thai Girls. My wife has been nagging me to take her to Switzerland for years.

Does your GF have a piece of paper stapled to her passport, detailing the maximum time she can stay for one entry? If she has, lets say its 4 weeks, then she can stay for 4 weeks at a time on a multiple entry visa on as many entries as she can me in the 6 month period
If no paper is attached then she can stay for upto 6 months or for shorter period as she pleases and as many entries as she pleases during the 6 month period

On a slightly different note
Anybody been to the embassy area in Bangkok. Its quite a sight to see outside the British Embassy, literally ques about 300 yards long waiting to make visa applications (you have to get there for about 5am for 7.30am opening), other embassies not an applicant in site!!!
Dont know what the attraction is about the UK but thai people seem desparate to go
