General Purchases -- Advice Please!
Would love some feedback on others experiences in terms of buying the following items:
DVD's - Have bought 30 so far. Previewed most and in credit to the guy who was selling, if the quality wasn't good, he told me so. Even wouldn't let me buy Cinderella Man coz of the poor quality! He quoted 100b each but I ended up getting the 30 for about 85b each. Should I be bargaining harder? What's a good price?
Cigarettes - 550b for 200 Marlboro in the superette near where I'm staying. Is Duty Free in Bangkok cheaper?
Sports Jerseys - Like Man. Utd or All Blacks etc - How much should I pay?
Suits/Shirts - Paid 15000b for 2 Jackets, 3 pants, 1 skirt, 4 shirts and 2 blouses (For myself and my Girlfriend). Suits both made from Merino. 2 shirts were Thai silk, 2 were silk blend and 2 blouses were cotton. Also paid 900b in a different shop for a silk shirt. This was on my 1st visit to a thai tailor so I didn't know really what to expect price-wise. Am sure now that this is over the odds but again, couldn't get what I got at home for the same price in a million years.
Shoes - For a decent pair of tailor mades; leather upper and sole. Price range? And roughly how long to make? Also, was in a ready-made shoe shop yesterday and saw some pairs I liked. All have price stickers; are you supposed to bargain with these or no? (1 pair I saw was about 3000b - if I can bargain, what would be a good price?)
All and any replies greatly appreciated!
BTW: Staying in Tropical Garden Resort in Kata - Really nice hotel! Not Super-Flash or anything but very clean and comfortable with very good facilities. Would rate it by home (Ireland/UK) standards as about a 3 1/2 star.

Good thread IrishJD,
Im not really into haggling, So its a great thread to find what exactly are the average prices other BMs pay for things, At least then everyone will have a guideline to start from
My mate paid 380bt for a monaco jersey.
He paid 3500bt for a suit.
About 200bt for sun glasses.
5 CD's for 400bt or 100bt each.
4 lighters for 300bt or 100bt each.
Paid 400bt for a sports bag.
Bought a pellet hand gun for 850bt in pattaya.

Watch out lads, an Irishman is asking about getting guns through customs
Speaking of customs, a friend of mine is going to LOS and is thinking about getting some porn on DVds or vcds. Anyone know what the law is regarding importing such filth in to the UK? It would be for private use only but very explicit.

it is now perfectly legal to buy and own consensual adult porn in the UK.
In particular it is now legal to import hardcore
The following content is not acceptable:
* any material which is in breach of the criminal law
* material likely to encourage an interest in abusive sexual activity (eg paedophilia, incest) which may include depictions involving adults role-playing as non-adults
* the portrayal of any sexual activity, whether real or simulated, which involves lack of consent
* the infliction of pain or physical harm, real or (in a sexual context) simulated. Some allowance may be made for mild consensual activity
* any sexual threats or humiliation which do not form part of a clearly consenting role-playing game
* the use of any form of physical restraint which prevents participants from withdrawing consent, for example, ball gags
* penetration by any object likely to cause actual harm or associated with violence
* activity which is degrading or dehumanising (examples include the portrayal of bestiality, necrophilia, defecation, urolagnia)
The following content, subject to the above, may be permitted:
* aroused genitalia
* masturbation
* oral-genital contact including kissing, licking and sucking
* penetration by finger, penis, tongue, vibrator or dildo
* non-harmful fetish material
* group sexual activity
* ejaculation and semen
These guidelines make no distinction between heterosexual and homosexual activity.

I bring 30 or 40 DVDs every time, various subjects!, and my take has always been that the Thais (they do search your bags on the way out on occasion) would be pretty interested in that sort of thing too, it might cost you if they find them
UK customs, I think, would be more concerned with counterfeit stuff like new release movies than a bit of percy filth.

Why do you allways refer to Thailand as a third world country? What is and what do you consider "the thirld world"?
As far as I know the EU does not consider Thailand as a "less developped country" if I may use that expression. That is why they have problems exporting some products like prawns to us. They have to pay import taxes.
Nobody says you have to pay 3000 baht for a pair of shoes. If you think that too expensive you can buy a pair of plastic shoes for 199 baht. By the way, the price of a good pair of leather shoes (Church or Bally or whatever), not even hand made, can go up to 12000-20000 baht in Europe. Handmades are more expensive.

No problems at all IJ, I actually thought they would take it off us, But once you put it in your big bag and not your hand luggage it should be ok.
Next time I go over, Im going to get one of the riffle ones with the red lasers on them, They are going for about 1300/1800bt, But just to be safe I am going to post that one home and hopefully it gets through.
PS: If your getting one IJ, Dont forget to get plenty of ammo, That bag of pellets they give you goes very quickly when your having fun

My mistake here, me and a pal were on the way into Thailand, not out, and he was bringing a lot of cigarettes that he had bought on the way over. he had to pay the obligatory 'fine' but they left him all his smokes

On my first trip a few years back, my bags were searched along with the rest of the passengers on the plane.
It was quite lucky really that my friend had run out of room in his bags, so i had to put a few of his things in my hand luggage. Well when the guard/custom bloke opened my bag up, the was a thick layer of foam all over the top of my clothes due to a hastily placed bottle of shaving gel! Well the hand went in, then quicky came out along with "Fine sir, kindly move on!". So his hands never got as far as the rolex's!
So if you dont want to be searched, just spill loads of shaving foam in your bag!
