ON holiday ! European food or thai food ?

JUST writing on the food subject on another thread and got to thinking. As a chef i personally i reckon Thai food is probably the best in the world so why is it so many farang come to los and spend there time in restaurants eating european food, Dont get me wrong there are many good british restaurants in los with good food but why come all that way to eat sheperds pie and chips 7 days a week. personally when i am in Pattaya for instance i like too have european food maybe 2 times a week but one of my mates from glasgow john only eats british or german food thats totaly ridiculous as well as that in general food in the farang restaurants tends to be more expensive But the big point i am trying to make is when you come to los you should try to experience the whole package and that includes the cuisine but too many people that i personally know would rather eat KFC AND MCDONALDS other than thai food do ant other bms have the same experience as me or am i just unlucky to come on holiday with a couple of fussy gits !

Only western food I eat in Thailand is bacon & eggs for breakfast (brunch). I do like my spice, but every 2nd or 3rd day I try to order a more mild dish for dinner. Something sweet and sour or just a plain cooked fish. After a while all that spice confuses my stomach too much. Don't want to end up doing a 'Dawsey'. I'll loose face .....

First time to los i was with farang girlfriend and we ate thai food everyday for the first 10 days for the cultural experience thing, but I never knew what I was ordering and kept getting real hot crap, then I said f*ck that why am i insisting on eating stuff i do not like and ate at european restaurants.

Ever since then I have been to los single and eaten with tg's who have explained and taught me what to eat and now only ever eat thai food all the time I am there and love it. I think you need to be with a LT so she gets to know the kind of food you will like and orders it for you or better still cooks it for you.

I have one buddy who doesnt seem to appreciate Thai food at all.. His wife is fully trained up on farang cooking.. Dont understand it myself..

I am happy to eat Thai 90% of the time but have that carb additicion for breads and potatoes (less so pasta sometimes) and every once in a while crave a stonking bloody steak.. Eating Thai so much at home as a staple means my resturant eating is probably biased more to farang grub (or non Thai such as Indian or Sushi) as my GF has not yet perfected cooking it and I dont see the need to make her as she does cook great Thai.. My first wife was one of the best Thai cooks I have ever experienced and every meal was multiple dishes of exquisite food..

food

I mostly eat thai food, but theres nothing better than when your sitting at a bar with 15 bottles of beer in your gut, and you tell a bar girl to go and get a pizza, it tastes so good.
Also find big mac and coke will cure any hangover.

Very few good restaurants here except Thai

Running a Thai restaurant here I eat Thai most of the time. But like most things in life with food you need some variety, I really cravea good sandwhich's here in Phuket which is rare. I also like good Italian and Mexican (try BBQ hut in Patong good ribs as well).
There are many restaurants here in Phuket but in my opinion there are very few good ones.
Lots of guys come here and open a restaurant because they have always wanted to open a restaurant on Phuket and can do it rather cheaply compared to back home. The problem is usually this is their second career and don't have the proper skills in running a restaurant. (perhaps they were in the IT business before coming here)
This is like me coming here and running a computer repair shop or something I really don't have experience at.
Beware of the restaurant that has over 50 items on the menu of all differant types of food as their business levels are low so the food is usually frozen or old and to cook five differant types of cuisines by one chef will usually result in mediocore results.

Just my two cents!

Cheers!

Thai or Western ?

Hi All

Since my first trip to Thailand in 1988, I have developed a real preference for Asian cuisine. Maybe, it was always there, but being married for a number of years, and raising three children, the opportunity to try something a bit pleasant to the taste, was limited. (Including the wife).

I have become, since splitting with my first wife, back in 1988 (just prior to my first trip to LOS, funnily enough), quite a reasonable purveyor of Asian / Indian dishes. I have always enjoyed cooking very much, and, since my freedom from mundane 'meat and three veg' days, have constantly maintained a high percentage of Asian food in my daily diet.

Given the above, when I travel to SE Asia, I continue my habit, and would not be happy with western cuisine at all. Funnily enough, most of the Thai ladies I have had the good fortune to meet, prefer Macdonalds or Kentucky Fried Chicken.

This leads to a rather humorous combination of 'East meets West' and we invariably end up eating at a Thai Restaurant . . . Her, with her paperbag of western takeaways, and me eating copious amounts good Thai food.

It does amuse me, when I see the typical English or European couple actively seeking Pea, Pie and Pud, or Sourkraut and Sausages, when they are thousands of miles away from home, and unwilling to even try anything different.

Cheers

Pdm3

Hi,
I agree with you.
If a restaurant have on the menu 50 items and offers Thai, German, Italien etc. food, than most of this can not be good.
Mostly it has a European owner which can cook a little bit from his own country but sure not from the others and sure not Thai. For Thai eating so I prefer a smaller restaurant where mostly only Thai go eating. If I want a European meal I go to a restaurant where only items from one country are offered. (but that’s very rare in Phuket)
If you eat Thai food in an European restaurant, you only get the Thai food for “tourists”.
That´s are my two cents word.

I love Thai food! I have a big thing for spicy food since i was little! Before Thai became my thing, I used to have at least one Indian meal a week. But now its Thai once a week when im at home or in Europe, and maybe an Indian or two every other!

While in in Thailand though, i cant seem to eat Thai all the time as it has a bad consequence on my stomach! It gives me real bad craps! (They Burn! )

So while in los, i tend to eat western food during the day, and Thai at night. But of course this is not always the case.......... when more than a few Singha's are involved!

When i went with a friend on my first trip, he was very strange! He would order at every meal a Farang dish aswell as a Thai dish! Now im a big bloke, but i struggle to eat 1 dish as its so hot in Los, but 2 every meal would be eaten. I asked him why! His reason was "because food was SO cheap!"

I like beer!

Its european food for me im afraid, Dont get me wrong I like some of the thai dishes but just cannot stomach them after a few days and I end up feeling really sick which is not what I go on holiday for.

By the way this is not just in thai, I am a really fussy eater at home and have the exact same problem with every holiday i go on, And its not only food, I have the same problem with drink, As I drink a particular cider and thats it (Bulmers), Cannot stomach any other drink really unless I am pissed already, Funny enough I can eat most types of food when I am pissed aswell

Maybe thats the solution Stay pissed

Although I eat thai food nearly every meal, as whatever it is that is shuffed in front of me, I do eat McD's and a roast normally the lamb from the islander once a week.

90% Thai for me and 10% other, which includes barbecue type meals which is better than most things I can get round here.

Daftest conversation I ever heard in LOS went like this and was between 2 farang women. One had been in LOS a few days and the other had just arrived. This was in the middle of Pattaya (soi7/8 area - surrounded by Thai restaurants)

''Have you managed to find anywhere good to eat yet?'' ask the newly arrived person.

Answer '' yes, if you walk about half a mile down that way you'll find a Pizza hut and McDonalds''

I could have cried.
