food costs in LOS.

i was shopping last night and i was thinking, the cost of food is not that much greater at home when you break it down.

say at a roadside table place. really you get alot of rice and vegetables and small amount of meat. so its only say 60-80baht, but you are getting small potrions.
when you go to a small farang food place, it comes to say 200-300baht for a meal and thats much off from a casual meal at home.
i think the only time you get really good value for money are when you eat more upscale restaurants.
thats just my opinion, im sure people will disagree

You show me where I can go get a (delicious) meal cooked fresh and put on the table for 20 - 30 baht back home.. Thats 50 - 75 cents (Euro or US +-).. Noodle soups, Phad Thai, Hoi Thod, etc all come at about that price..

I can go and eat Jim Jum or Go Toh for 80 - 100 baht per head as much as you can eat..

Thats in Patong which is WAAAYYY more expensive than any where else around..

My brother is in Iceland at the moment.. Steak dinner is costing him about 30 - 40 Euro with a beer per person...

Yes los is much cheaper..

But not everywhere. Prices in touristic places have gone up dramaticly!

There was a new restaurant at the end of Kata, a bit further then the boathouse direction Kata Noi. Local style, not fancy. But 200-300 bath and more for simple Thai food!

With a bottle of wine the amount will be the same as in manny countrys, because the latter is more expensive

ive been to the market, with tg's and by myself, i dont think you can put a decent filling meal on the table for 20-30 baht, if you can, ill be by so you can show me.
for example, chicken and rice soup, which i love on nai, theres 2 spots. costs 30baht(75 cents us) but you dont get that much. a few thin pieces of chicken and rice and broth. you cant find a soup that cheapi in america, but youll pay say 80baht but for 2x as much food. so its basically the same
you mentioned the steak. i actually said thats where yo get value is eating the more expensive food

Of course Patong is driven by the tourist dollar. If you eat from the places the locals do then it is extremely cheap. We eat mostly from the kitchen in the car park at the back of SeaDragon, not only is it cheap, but the food is cooked the way I like it, Thai style and not the watered down farang style.

Out of interest anyone had any problems with food hygiene eating from smaller stalls etc? Heard some arguments at least you can see the "kitchen" unlike eating in a restaurant etc...

Some would argue thai's have a better stomach 4 it but they are human the same as us at the end of the day.

I'm one that usually can eat anything in los so I'm lucky. Don't be afraid to try it, just pack some immodium to be on the safe side, the worse thing you would get is a case of Bangok Belly

I ate dam near everything and really enjoyed the stalls. Only time I got into the pepto was after a chicken burger from room service. Apparently dog food qualifies as chicken.

B/Kok belly.

After visiting Phuket about 30 trips, only once have I had a problem & that was with some mussels I bought from Tesco. I ate them the night before I travelled back home. Worst trip back ever. I spent most of it in the plane toilet.
I eat mostly at small Thai stalls and from vendors etc. Sometimes I buy meat, fish veg etc. from the fresh food market and cook for myself.
Best Thai place I've eaten at is the stalls at Nanai market. Really good tasty food for next to nothing.
What I pay 100 baht for there would cost me around 1000 baht at my local Thai restaurant back home.
Don't be frightened to try the Thai food kitchens / stalls.

Dear BMs...

When I was in Patong (Dec 02) we mainly ate at steak houses and I remember the prices were quite over 200-300 Baht, There was one place thou that served a number of very delicious dishes for about 160 Baht if my memory is serving me well. However the protions were small (at least for me) so I ended ordering 2 dishes... In other words 320 Baht for a meal... (the ladies at the resto laughed/smiled big at me coz I had such a big apetite however they were extremly friendly). Anyway, at some other steak houses the price was much higher, about 350-400 for a dish but the portion was bigger on the other hand (I won't mention names) which in the end the whole meal landed at 1K Baht for two. And this was almost 3 years ago. I would however like to taste some "genuine" Thai prepared food and I wonder if you could recommend a couple of places. I'm not a dare devil when it come to my tummy, I'm not super sensitive but I don't want to take such risks. But if you can recomend a resto serving good, genuine and spicy Thai food, please let know. Cheers!

The seedy alleyways

I only ate (until i found a Thai girlfriend) in a seedy alleyway of Bangla rd.
90 bht for a Singha beer, plate of rice with a dolop of meat (which grew bigger every nite that i returned) & a plate of fresh vegie on the side.
A bargin at twice the price. Never got the runs once when i was over there.
But 3 days into eating food back home, stomach rejected my local meals.
Do as the Romans is my moto, so what if you get jelly belly, all your doing is building up resistance is what i feel will be a great meal next time

can not agree or disagree

I can not agree or disagree with Marc. I do live in USA and eat out a lot and travel a lot too.
I think LOS is cheaper in food cost but you need to find the right joint. The food is fresh and tasty Also you can have your tg friend next to you too In LOS some places are expensive. A decent dinner with a beer or two will cost you 300-400bht. This is expensive in LOS standard but certainly inexpensive in US prices.
Here in US even a Mc Donald's meal deal is $6-7 bucks. Food Court in the mall is also same or higher. But the qualility is bad or not good as our LOS food.
In my view LOS is cheaper, better and you have more choice pal

Well the girl I was with wasn't thai and i was also being concerned for her health as well. But you're right, I should perhaps take some more risks and not play it always too safe, after we only live once... I would personally skip the vegetables... uuuh vegies give me the creaps... And 90 baht is nothing, I mean for a meal and a beer... Thank you for the tip!! Cheers!
