Motorbike Taxis : A warning.

In the light of recent events I would like to tell a tale from a couple of nights ago. I usually take a motorbike taxi down to Mai Thai bar and this time the guy was driving a bit fast and kept overtaking. Slow down i said, who are you today Michael Schumacher? heheh he laughed and appologised then stated he had had 'some' beers tonight.

So, just be careful, I have often smelt alcohol hopping on the back of a taxibike and seen tuk tuk drivers buying bottles of Sang Som.

Motorbike taxis stinking of Sangsom are everywhere.. I dont take them hardly at all but I know that you need to check your driver before you get on the back..

Sure they are drinking. But they can do relatively minor damage. We also have a lot of car drivers (mostly Thai) with a bottle of Mae Khong or Sam Song in their body. And nobody's gonna check them. The most dangerous roads in the world (statistically) in the country we all "love" so very much.

They may not do much damage but if your on the back you dont get much protection either, I'm sure Hobbsy meant for the pillion to be kept safe from damage.

The only reason I drive a motorbike myself instead of my car is that when I'm drunk (quite some time) I can only hurt myself. I can miss the corner, bounce into a tree and I'm dead.
When you are driving a car, the chance that you are hitting and killing somebody else ("oops"), f.e a motorbike with some people, is far greater.

- yes, I know "don't drive drunk"
- yes, you can do severly damage with a motorbike too.

'The official statistics for the period 20th May to 20th June 2004, just for Phuket, were given as 14 deaths and 906 injuries in motorbike accidents alone,' - Quote from another website.

Clearly a slightly dodgy place to be on a motorbike, if your pilot is pissed I guess that would increase your odds even more. It never occurred to me that the taxi boys would take a drink while working.

So why do it

I have never read so much crap in my life.

Try telling your story to Geespot and see what you get.

What an idiot

If I can choose to have a road with all drunk motorbike drivers OR one with all drunk car drivers, I would have made up my mind quickly.

If I really can choose, i would prefer a road with all drunk bicycle drivers. It looks a good workout to me, biclycing home from Patong to Chalong and a lot of fun too.
But I'm not doing so, beause the Thai streets are overcrowded with totally drunk chaufs, who can hit you just like that and nobody gonna's find out.

We seen examples.

Not according to Time Magazine:

'(With an average of 36 deaths a day, Thailand ranks sixth in the world in road fatalities, according to the WHO.)' - August 2004

The roads will be dangerous until people learn not to drive drunk. If the boys in brown pursued drunk drivers with as much enthusiasm as they show when fleecing us for not wearing helmets the death rates would tumble, and maybe those among us who make such dumb posts would think before they got on their bike?

Not only motorbike taxis. I went with an airport limo few months ago and the drivers went out of sight (behind a tree 40m away from the terminal and had some sang som or something before they want back. That time I was scared to be involved in an accident.)

I didnt expect drivers at airport to be drinking alchohol during work hours.

In light of recent events, the statement about motorbike drivers, "Sure they are drinking. But they can do relatively minor damage" seems both inaccurate and extremely insensitive.

In the US, almost every person drives a car(even most with motorcycles, who use them more for recreation than transportation). For a death to occur on a local street such as Nanai where the recent tragedy occurred, is almost unheard of in this country.

When all the vehicles involved in accidents are cars, then all the safety devices, i.e., seat belts, air bags, ABS brakes, and the fact that you have the protection of being surrounded by tons of steel to absorb the impact fo the collison, results in very few fatalities, except on freeways and highways.

When motorcycles collide with anything, bodies go flying, which can and does have dire consequences. Are motorcycles safer than cars? I don't seem how one can seriously pose such a question.

What you say is right, hobbsy. The only way is not to use a motobike taxi. Even they are not drunk some of them are not the best drivers.
If i cannot avoid to take a motobike taxi i try to get an older driver. They drive slowly (usually).

I hate motor bike taxi's! I will always try my hardest to avoid using them for a number of reasons.

I dont feel safe on them even if the driver is sober (Im 18stone, so an 10 stone driver wont be able to 'balance' me out). Even the few times I have been in los, I have seen far to many accidents involving motorbikes. And the few times I have been forced to use the damn things, I have nearly always burnt the crap out of my leg from the exhuast pipe! As when Im riding it i do not feel it due to the 'singha effect'. But the next morning I sure do!

As has been said already Burg, In light of the recent tradegy that occured to G's family, I find your statment extremely offensive, I dont know whether or not you ment it that way, I cant judge that because I have never met you, So Ill give you the benefit of doubt.

Personally I dont ever drink and drive, I couldnt live with myself if I caused another person's death, Due to my stupity, Because thats exactly what it is, The roads in Los are bad enough even without people flying around pissed while driving on them.

You only have to look at the stats and reports of tourists killed in Los and the majority are road fatallity's due to drink driving and the majority of them are from motorbikes aswell.

I also know a lot of BMs on this forum do it all the time, Thats up to them, But after what has happened to Gs niece, Someone the majority of BMs know on this forum personally, I urge you all to think twice before doing it in future, Not only for your own safety's but for the innocent people who sometimes end up the victims of this.

I dont want to come across like im some saint, Or preaching to everyone what they should or should not do, I know everyone already knows all this shit, But sometimes its good to get a reminder now and again.

PS: If any BMs comes across TukTuks or motorbike taxi's who you know who have been drinking, Refuse to go with them, And tell them the reason why, And maybe just maybe if enough people done this then from loss of buisness some of them would knock the drink on the head while driving, Its not like there is a shortage off TukTuks in Los, All you have to ask yourself is "Would you get into a taxi at home if the driver was drunk", The anwser in most cases would be "No" So why take the risk on holiday when there's loads more around.

This drink driving business has been covered in great detail in previous posts, and it doesnt matter how much time has past, nothing ever changes the fact that drink driving is STUPID and no words make a satisfactory excuse. They really do need to get serious about this problem, and stop worry about issues that dont really matter, like what time bars close.

I'm trying to understand the Thai Mentality more and more.

In India I noticed that they drove like absolute maniacs on the road and was told that their belief was that ''when your number is up, it's up'' and was totally out of their control when they were called to their maker. So if they had an accident, it was not their bad driving but fate.

Is there something similar in LOS with their acceptance of death that means that they don't take drink driving as serious as they should do?
