Terrorists in Phuket?
Hi,
Do you think that terrorist attacks are now possible or inevitable in Phuket? In the light of whats happening in London and Egypt, is it just a matter of time before they strike? We are travelling there next month and the thought has crossed our minds that this is a possibility- but then it seems no matter where you go you will be at risk. Cant let the b***t**ds get to you -can you?

yes maybe there is a chance, but to those who love phuket it does not affect our plans.
many on this forum have returned after sars, tsunami and the trouble in the south, we dont stop coming.
for many it is our second home, or our ideal home

There have been scares before, and the local boys in brown seem pretty efficient at the way they sort things. At the moment Bangla is closed to traffic between 6pm and 4 am so little chance of anything happening on Bangla. But what the hell, there is asmuch chance of something happening here as in any holiday destination in the world, so why would they pick on Phuket, and if you are that scared you probably won't enjoy yourself, so keep away Phuket is a place to party and enjoy yourself, just what I am doing at the moment!

Coolhand is right
Dano,
Listen to Coolhand he has his shit sorted.
If they are gonna get ya, they gonna get ya. Please don't let them get to ya, before they get ya! Just don't bother running away, why die tired?
16 explosions and 143 dead here yesterday, you only hear on the news in your own country if it concerns someone from home.
The Terrorists want you to be terrified, they breed off it, probably 'cracking one off the wrist' at posts like Dano's.
If they frighten you, find a warm and cuddly BG and stay in bed..................unless there's a bomb under it of course!!!
PS If a wide-eyed scary bloke in a ski jacket in 38 degrees of heat, approaches you on Patong beach, starts fiddling with a string and asks you "does my bomb look big in this?" Remember.........Kids blow up so early these days!........ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY! RELAX!

Why would they hit on Phuket? There are more crowded places like Benidorm, Rhodos and Kos

Because the muslim sepratist south is what 600 km's away ?? Because we would be the nearest and one of the most logical targets to strike for both media impact, farang casualties and muslim 'moral' stance against sex trade..
Do you think its coincidence that there are now roadblocks on and off the island.. Random roadblocks entering patong... mirrors loooking under cars going into shopping car parks.. facial recognician added to the airport... Bangla turned into a walking street... etc..
As much as I hate to say it, Phuket is a likely and very visable high profile target..

Whilst anything is possible, I would feel more worried about something happening if I was back in Sydney. Anywhere is a potential target these days, if you let it get to, you might as well have an underground shelter built at your home, and move in there and not come out.

Thai Police
Sounds like the Thai Police are getting it together!
How much tax are you paying over there towards the Thai Police doing random under car searches of vehicles at points of expat and local congregation (when was the last time you dropped to your knees, prayed and then checked your car, if you are that concerned) Random road-blocks, extra airport checks etc etc? Brilliant as far as I am concerned. The scrotes see this high viz activity and like the cowardly peices of shit they are, usually move on to a softer target. Are you and the bar you sit at a soft target?
I know I handover a small fortune to the British Government and rarely get a service like that. I had to wait 30 minutes in the UK for the police and ambulance to come and collect the scrote who had managed to break into my garage (He won't be doing it again)
Well done the Thai Police for once
You are walking right into the terrorists hands, you sound terrified, they get a ickle wickle hardon reading posts like yours on forums like this!!!

Sure, possible. Why not? The south is already some years dealing with bombs and (moslim)terror. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happened in Phuket.
And there's nothing the police can do (if it has priority anyway).
To stay home for a possible bomb-danger (or chicken flu or SARS or Tsunami) is a absolutely laugh. There are far bigger risks in your daily life in Thailand.

I say this to all who fear the terrorists is that it's more likely you will die in a car crash or motorcyle accident then by the hands of a few cowards.
If you fear these guys just stay home, don't get out of bed and have mommy give you chicken soup and rub your tummy.
That being said I wouldn't go to Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Mississippi.
Come to Phuket and have fun!

I LIVE IN TOKYO, AND TO BE HONEST, I THINK THAT THEY WOULD ATTACK SOMEWHERE LIKE HERE FIRST BEFORE PHUKET.
Live is very unpredictable, so the best thing to do is to enjoy the time you have left on this world.

Easier to get to.. large amounts of munitions and fertilizer (and 'real' explosives) stolen in the deep south.. Not too easy to get a couple tonnes of oxegenating fertilizer into Tokyo if your called abdul on a Thai passport..
Not so hard to get a truck of it onto Phuket tho..

I've survived Bird Flu, SARS and the Tsunami in Phuket. Now, I could be killed on a bus or the Underground here in London. If it's my time and I've got to go, I'd much rather go in Thailand with a beer in one hand and a girl in the other. Might even put the beer down and have a spare hand for another girl.
Lifes to short to worry about what might happen, your more likely to be knocked down by a tuk-tuk.

Soi bangla pedestrianised at nighttime is not going to stop a terrorist/suicide bomber. There's nothing to stop someone sitting at the ladyboy bars at the start of Soi Crocodile with a rucksack and blowing up himself and a couple of hundred revellers.
