I eat the many different flavours of Som Tam depending on my mood and taste at the time.. I genuinely like the stuff but if its full issan strength I need Sticky rice to dilute the spice factor..

If I am sober I get them to make a mid spice one (not farang taste but not issan melt the plate hot either) the hardest part is getting the Som Tam woman to know I like a bit of spice as if you tell them to be careful then they assume farangs cant eat any spicy and only add 3 or 4 chillies which leaves it pretty bland.. Somtam poo balat with khao neow and some barbeque chicken.. tasty healthy grub..

Hi Talbotman,

It does take some getting used to but I don't need to be drunk to eat it, I usually hang out with the thai girls and eat it in the mornings for breakfast, I have also eaten it many times while I stayed in Isaan where it is usually even even more spicy.

The best way to kill the pain is to take a ball of the sticky rice and chew on it for a while.

The absolute best fire killer is milk (though rice, bread, etc all help) the fire in them is the capsaicinoids which are oily in nature and worst close to the seeds.. Milk allows the oil to come off of the toungue where water will wash over the oil and not mix with it..

Thai chillis can be very variable from a quite mild 80k up to 300 or so which is right there with the Habanero / Scotch bonnets (the hottest natural chilli)..

Eat it everyday along with other isaan delicacies such as yam naim, kapau moo kai dao, lab moo etc...................

My house is like isaan central, im tied down as force fed this stuff, along with being brainwashed into speaking and thinking in lao/isaan (thai dialect) so bad that I found myself on a recent visit to scotland speaking to my mother in lao without realising
if you get that far you are then given the honoury title of farang/lao

I like this Som Tam.
I like to eat very spicy – also at home in Germany.
But one thing is--- if you buy a Som Tam as a farang, you never get it that spicy.

I CALL MY MAN BRANDY BECAUSE HE IS RANDY!
the 2nd one says
I CALL MY MAN WHISKEY BECAUSE HE IS FRISKY!
the 3rd one says i call my man cointreau
before she can say anything else the first one pipes up "aint that some kind of fancy liquor
the 3rd one says IT SURE THE HELL IS HUNNY!
