I guess its probably because you cant spell QANTAS properly. Loosing luggage isnt normally something an airlines does all on their own, its their ground handling agents. And I'm not pro QANTAS, I'm a lifetime QANTAS club member, but will not fly them due to some bad experiences, like watching other people in business class press the call button and no one coming.

Its the old saying, what does QANTAS stand for

Q - quick
A - and
N - nasty
T - typical
A - australian
S - service

Do yourself a favour and fly Singapore.

My worst flight ever was with Biman Airlines from Bangladesh. Last winter, after the tsunami, when I had to fly back from LOS to The Netherlands, I had to change the plane in Dhaka(Bangladesh). They simply told everyone in the plane to give out there passports and that the originaly planned stop off 4 hours was now 15 hours. Everyone had the choice of keep there passport and staying at the airport or to be transferred to a hotel in Dhaka. All the passengers decided to go to the hotel.(Big mistake) The hotel was actualy a jailhouse. We where locked up and could not go out of the hotel(they said they could not guarrantee our safety), the only fluid in the house was water. We had to give the guard money, so he could go out to buy some coca cola for us. With the coke and our tax free alcohol from BKK we survived. The next morning the breakfast was terrible and there where another 4 hours of delay. The whole trip from LOS to Holland took me about 38 hours. People of Biman turned out to be very unfriendly. The initial thing that made me book with them was the price of the flight(about 500 euro middle of December), but never again.

It was maybe an exception due to the amount of people wanting to come back after the Tsunami, no? But I agree with you, not a nice experience

I have travelled with Star Alliance (KLM-Lufthansa-Thai Airways) and with Air France... never problems

Until you have tried some domestic indonesian flights like Garuda Air or Merpati etc you can not make any claims..

I am not a nervous flyer in any way.. I really was concerned on a Merpati landing into Bali from Jakarta !!!

One of my mates at christmas 2003 booked with air uzbekistan (hope thats spelled correctly stevem) and was stuck at Tashkent airport for 17 hours on the outbound journey and 14 hours on the return. i always try to fly with eva/or china air via london or amsterdam no complaints whatsoever. when i lived in London i lived in the east end and i used to fly fromlondon city with klm to amsterdam and then china air from there i once did lufthansa from london city and it was avery uncomfortable journey i was amazed because germans tend to be big guys just like myself but the space in the seats was very small next year i am going to fly emirates glasgow/dubai/bangkok was going to do it this time but when i was booking in january i had just returned from los and was potless and they would not take a booking with a deposit they wanted 100% of money up front £545 i have had good reports about emirates plenty of leg space and good service . so will try them for my may 2006 trip.

But I like the Merpati air hostesses.
Worst trip was Lufthansa/Thai, February this year. Left Brussels with 3 hours delay due to a strike of the ground services (my luggage didn't even leave at all). Missed my Thai connecting flight in Frankfurt, they put me on the Lufthansa flight to Jakarta via BKK. Arrived in BKK 36 hours before my luggage. Comming back, sitting in the plane, public announcement that one passenger didn't show up, so had to discharge his luggage. Left with more than 1 hour delay and arrived with delay in Frankfurt. Had 15 minutes to get connecting flight to Brussels. I (and 9 other passengers) managed to do that with the help of Lufthansa. Arrived in Brussels minus luggage.
Have had bad flights with Turkish Airlines, Garuda, Philippine but the worst was President Airlines (see pic).

Cathay Pacific; left us sat on the ground in Hong Kong without turning a wheel for three hours. I will never forgive them for that.

Brittania; charter flights to Phuket sounded like a great idea but landed back in Manchester at 2am. Everyone tired and cranky after a nasty atmosphere on board. One bloke (small) failed to grab another bloke's (big) bag off the conveyor belt and the big guy punched the small guy and shoved him through the curtains on the conveyor to go get it!

Is a pic of an F27 or F50. Not too unusual to see tires like that, so long as the metal layer under neath is still in tact, the tire is OK. But would normally be replaced ASAP.

Just reading Diz's report and it gave me the shudders thinking about it. Glad you are still with us Diz.

I know the thread is the worst flight to LOS but again - mine isn't!! I did have the amazing flight of my life with Diamond Airlines based in Guinea and Sierra Leone, West Africa. They fly four ex-Ukrainian military MI-8's (Hips) that are hand painted bright red with a white diamond on the fusilage. You can either drive to Guinea from Sierra Leone (Bad tracks, Jungle, Armed bandits and a typical African Border X-ing point) or fly 20 minutes on a badly (if at all) maintained Helicopter for $50 and miss all that out. No contest.

I bought my ticket (A painted stick! - They have 8 painted sticks per helicopter, different coloured stick for each flight!) and waiting in a queue of Lebanese business men, women with machetes, rusting LPG Gas bottles and a small goat. The Helicopter lands covering everything and everyone in the local dust and the door slides open. A local girl (Night-Fighter) in a kind of uniform collects your stick and you pick your seat. It's a short flight at about 200 feet above the jungle. The girl gives you an orange (In-flight catering) and you can smoke your head off if you wish. 8 Passengers were holding onto our orange peel to give to the hostess with the mostest which she took off us, opened the window and threw it out. Brilliant.

During the coup in Sierra Leone I thought it about that time to bug out and get a flight into Guinea, I did try Diamond Airlines again. $1000 a seat this time! Supply and demand eh? Tch. I drove. Great trip! Honest!

by the way, I worked out DILLIGAF ages ago, but I'm still stuck on what BMABAITY stands for Best attempt so far = Bring Me A Beer And I'll Thank You
I think it's 3 whole oranges now Diz, I'm not sure, I never flew with them again.

You've blown my Signature Diz (10 out of 10) It's Buy Me A Beer And I'll Tell You. We as a Squadron used to have it behind the bar in some place or other and we always used to have a pint plonked down in front of us by some poor unsuspecting punter who then said......Yep........................"Go on then, what does it really mean?"

Nicke has really got to put this sign up at the MTB!

This is not about a LOS flight either but it is worth the story.

When I was 12(many years ago) my family was in Freeport, Bahamas and had to fly to West Palm Beach Florida. The day we were going to take off the morning was beautiful and everything looked perfect. What we did not know was that the coastline of Florida was covered with a tropical thunderstorm. We were on a 12 passenger, 2 engine prop plane and once we had boarded the plane, I noticed that no other planes were leaving the airport, including Boeing 737 jets. We found out later on that all flights excwept ours had been cancelled. We took off ands everything was fine for the first 20 miles of the 100 mile flight, except the sky kept getting darker. We were at about 10,000 feet and suddenly we hit the storm and it was so bad we were in a white out and getting bounced all over the place. 5 minutes later the lightning started and about 5 minutes after that we got hit on the left engine by a bolt of lightning and the engine caught on fire. The fire would not go out after the pilot shut down the engine so he decided to go into a dive to increase the airspeed to put the fire out. It was still very rough and the rain was still coming down heavily so we did not know where we were. The dive put out the fire thankfully but by the time we finally pulled out of the dive we ended up about 200' over the water, which we could finally see. At this poinnt the co-pilot yells "Get me the f*ck out of here".We flew like this in the storm for another 40 minutes(plane's speed was reduced and when we got hit by lightning were closer to Florida the the Bahamas so continued on rather than turning back) progressively getting lower and lower. We did not know it but we had been diverted to Fort Lauderdale, 60 miles further south. We finally reached Ft Lauderdale airport flying about 50' over the beach. Boy were we glad to get to solid ground. Little did we know that our trip was not finished yet. The airlines chartered a van to drive us to West Palm Beach. The driver would not take the toll road, even though the passengers said that they would pay the toll. So we headed north on US 1, a commercial highway full of businesses. The road was flooded out and full of accidents and it took 5 hours for what should have been an hour long drive. When we got to Palm Beach my grandfather told us that the storm had eneded in Palm Beach about 10 minutes after we took off but that it had stalled over Ft Lauderdale so after we were hit by lightning we flew into the worst part of the storm.

Needless to say I am not a big fan of small planes. I have been on a few in Fiji with worn tires and duct take patches.

Another one of my favorites was when I flew into the Solomons and then up to the Western Solomons. They use Twin Otters, a good plane. We took off from Honiara to go to Munda. The plane flies to Seghe and the takes a turn to head to Munda. We were on the way to Seghe when we hit a whiteout and heavy rain. They navigate by GPS and we watched the GPS count down, the pilot made the turn, and reset the GPS. The conditions did not clear and the GPS continued to count down as we got close to Munda. The pilot started our descent(there are some mountains in the Solomons) and we still could not see anything. I am in the back of the plane and can not see the altimeter but the GPS buzzer goes off and we still can not see anything. The plane finally comes out of the fog at 100' and we are already over the airfield about half way down so the pilot has to fly around, all of this in a plane with a 60' wingspan that is overloaded and only 100' off the ground. On the final turn the pilot, a young Solomon Islander, turns the plane on its wing so heavily that the stall warning goes off for 30 seconds. It fells like our wingtip is about to hit the water. We get straightened out and come in to land on a grass runway covered with about 6" of rain. We slip and slide down the runway and come to a stop with 20' to spare. On the return from Seghe to Honiara, the plane had a "mechanical" and was 3 hours late. By the time it arrived a huge rain storm had hit and the pilot, an older experienced English expat who was about to retire, came off the plane, looked at the passenger and luggage list and started shaking his head. We made it off the runway with a few feet to spare and got in to Honiara just in time to make our connecting flight to Fiji. Our luggage made it because the VP of Solomon Airlines was out on the tarmac in shirtsleeves in the middle of the storm helping the baggage handlers move our luggage.

And last but not least, there is the time when I was standing in line for the bathroom on a 737 from Curacao to Miami in some tiurbulence, and the plane hit a bad pocket of turbulence and dropped 200' and slid sideways and the drink cart, which the stewardesses put near the bathrooms, fell over and would have crushed a few passengers if I had not caught it and kept it from falling over.

It is an old Russian turboprop plane and the wing is on top of the cabin. Motors (2) are under the wing and so is the landing gear. I just had to look through the window to take this photo. By the way, you can see those planes on BKK airport, just look for a President airline plane.
O, no aircon on board. If it gets hot they just send watermist in the cabin. Is the correct word "nebulise"?
Seats are for midgets. Small and no legspace.
