I see people mentioning IT work for a large multinational corp and hoping to be transferred. That sounds like a cool idea, but still, it sounds like you need a skillset that would be quite uncommon in order to achieve that?

From my perspective, 4 years as a systems level programmer (windows device drivers and the like) with storage devices, my skillset is not common, but I can't imagine someone sending me to a foreign country to work. I'd imagine it would be someone who would be a project manager, offshoring expert, or sales/service expert that would most likely get shipped out?

I think operating bars in Thailand has a lot to do with politics ( who you know ). Authorities are corrupt, you need protections. I'm not talking about local gangs, I'm talking about connection with the Authorities, they are the one that control the busy street life and gangs. Having a partner? I don't think that it is wise, however if you can find an individual that already have experiences or own bars before you would be lucky. Even if you don't get along with that individual at least you can venture on your own once you have learn the ropes. Always try to network with as many people as you can, nice people or not lol... LEARN the trades before you get into something you might not be able to handle..

From past experiences, do not go into a bar with a partner. Doesnt matter how well you know the other party.

Well I am going to take about a six month vacation there in late Nov.
Before I go back to work. I will definetly take your advice about networking and 6months will give me time to get some what of a feel for how things work over there. I am thinking maybe if I have $150k U.S.D I could start up a descent buisness and still have a nice cushion until the ball gets rollin.
I could also use some suggestions for apartments within the patong karon area. I saw some on a couple other threads. But I would think there would be a website like we have back home. Apartments.com or rent.com. but for thailand. any good suggestios?

Have been involved in the bar business in Thailand for far too long. Have had partners in 2 bars, both didnt workout for different reasons. Only offerring some advice from experience. All I'm trying to say is think twice about it before jumping in.

Take some advice from someone who has been there, or ignore it, up to you.

Also take a look at Vietnam realestate. Vietnam is a fast growing country and realestate are way cheaper than Thailand. Government don't allow foreigners to purchase land, but I have family there to use as ownership of land. You can get a nice brand new 2 story house for 20,000 usd or less. In quiet area it only cost around 5,000 usd. There are no property/land tax in Vietnam. I'm looking for investors for this venture.

Ermmmmmmmm,

Not many ideas actually mate, but you are correct in what you say regarding different ways of doing things in different countries.

Published accounts are prepared using rules drawn up over the years. SAAPs (statement of accounting practices) are rules of how to prepare the figures e.g. SAAP 2 includes STOCK - ''stock must be valued at the lower of COST and Net Realiseable Value''. There are then several ways of valuing stock (LIFO,FIFO average cost etc.) Then there are FRSs, SORPS which are further rules. They bring them out every year and make life difficult for your underpaid accountants. These are different from country to country, so if you've been preparing accounts in one place and then move abroad, you need to read up on the rules of that country.

The best chance of an accountant getting work in LOS is through working for an NGO (Non Government Organisation) such as Save the Children, Oxfam etc.

I had an interview with Save the Children about 6 years ago (one of the jobs was covering the far east ) Some time spent in London and some abroad - did not get it

There is an organistaion called MANGO (management accountants for non government organisations). They are like an agency who have accountants on their books who are willing to travel to disaster areas and help with keeping account of donations used in rebuilding etc. Mostly placed in Africa (civil war etc.) but I guess someone could have ended up in LOS after the Tsunami. Not sure who is administering the millions of ££££ donated by Brits?

I live in California, there are MANY massage parlors owned by asians ( mostly Koreans ) who are using their practices as a brothel. Girls working there are pretty good looking, they are mostly 50% Latin and 50 % Asian young ladies working. The so called Massage practice charge $ 30 usd to $ 55 usd for half an hour. Inside the room, the massage girls have another fee of usually $ 80 usd - 100 usd for everything ( note : clean sex practice ). You take your shower, wrap a towel around your waist and just lay down on your stomach. The girl will knock on the door and walk in ( note: you can choose which girl you want from the main door once you entered, they are all sitting down on a long sofa). Now back to the laying on your stomach part, once she's in the room, you can engage in a light conversation with her while she rub your back with baby lotion.. The usual conversations would be like : Whats your name ? Where are you from? How old are you? You are a pretty girl.. LOL and so on. She might ask if you're a cop, say NO. And she might ask is this your first time? SAY NO lol... You wanna make sure she's relax and not worry about you.. Tell her you know it all, you been here more than 6 times lol.. Anyway just get to the point, tell her you want it all.. SHe might ask for $ 100 usd , tell her Rosa ( make up a name ) and the other girls only charge $80 lol.. She says " Okay be right back ". She leave the room to get her little purse with condoms and ky jelly if needed lol... Okay back to the business part, I think it is much easier operating your own Massage Therapy practice here in the U.S. I'm not sure the LAW requirements, but nothing more than registered with the STate of your legal cerification certificate of massage practice. But I think the main headache is asking the CITY if you can open up such practice.. You will probably need insurance like any other business, certified massage girls that taken the course of Massage therapy. Girls seem to be imported from Mexico, Korean, Thailand ect. I don't know what the owner need to take or how long to get there legal practice certification of massage therapy. I don't know where you get this girls but I'm sure it wont be so hard to import or network with someone who can get them. Make sure you consult with lawyer about conducting business with this girls, what goes on behind the closed door is not your liability ect. There will be undercover narcs trying to set stings so make sure you know all the procedures about your business and the girls.. But I don't think it will cost more than $ 50k to start up this business.. GOOD LUCK....

Work in Iraq to generate fund$

Greetings--

One way to finance an intercontinental move is to do the Iraq thing for a year. As with most things in life pay is a direct function of risk. Put another way: How much time outside the wire?

http://www.dangerzonejobs.com/

is a (one-time) pay site for the Life Less Ordinary types. (Subscription to Soldier of Fortune not included...)

http://kbrjobs.com/

for the proletarian toilers among us. (They work 7/12 so time tends to fly by. Was with them my first tour.)

Those two will get you over there. An added bonus is they are not US-centric. Once in-country start asking questions of everyone you meet. You are bound to find a fit.
