Thank you Marc for your fast replied. That sounds like a great idea ! How much would you need to have a great life in Thailand? 50k annual income a year? Or more? Yes I like to drink often, girls yes ! Party here and there but would like to know how much is enough for a great living in Thailand..

You can live in thailand for 40 - 60k baht as a min guide for phuket I would say.. So 12 - 15k currently but a normal quiet life.

Double that is party most nights and drink and girls non stop.. thats still 30k usd max for a wild life.. Can live with villa and pool and lots of entertainment budget for <40k..

So it depends on you but anything from 15 - 40 covers normal to mad..

when you have a good thing, you dont screw it up. in my business, its almost like a balls up thing. if your out drinking with the boys, your in bright and early the next day. but i could see it getting out of hand in LOS. but i was out evernight last week. coming home at 1am-2am, getting up at 530am for work. the saving grace is that i gte out at 1pm, so go back to hotel, relax and ead out at 5pm to meet up with people from work. if it was nyc, getting out t 430pm and heading straight out, i wwouldve been dead by the way, sefton. jimmy emailed me. they may be sending him to vanouver for work, should be fun. he told me hes already banned from his hotel bar

Yeah some overwieght whisky tango annoyed him so he told her what he thought of her..

Also 'Gaz' who he is working with is a top top guy.. Was here over Christmas and new years and we did our mad Samui party run together.. With a bit of luck the gig with him and Jimmy will mean he can have the full winter season out here..

The money is crap bacardi. If its anything like the UAE you will get to take home the princely sum of £110 per month. A street cleaner can earn more.
The building game is finished in the Middle East as far as tradesman are concerned. They get all the labour shipped over from Pakistan/India and unless you are high management with a full c/v then forget it.
Iraq may be different, but do you want to be target practice in 49C heat for a living?? Not me for sure. I couldnt hack the summertime heat. From Mid May to Early Oct is unbearable. Its a good fat bastard diet though

Sorry Barcardi, I was just having one of my 'American' moments! It's worn off now. I was being pedantic about what little work the US is doing out here, despite the money that is getting thrown at this place by them. Some guys are doing sterling work and for the US lads at the sharp end, I really feel for them and thier families. Like I said, I'll have calmed down tomorrow! It comes and goes, probably been here too long.

Not heard of any brickie jobs here Barcardi. I know Amec are out here doing some re-construction work but most of the work, as you can imagine has and is, going to big US organisations. Oh dear, I feel it starting again!! No Denver, be good! Not sure what you have heard Barcardi, unless you are working behind the fortifications on one of the big US camps, such as Victory, Freedom, Justice, Solidarity, Patriot, Liberty (Can you see a pattern forming?) or a 'Green Zone warrior' i.e. someone who arrives in Baghdad, immediately goes behind a big wall and never leaves it, then I wouldn't as a civvy (Unless you are ex-military etc) want to be here, big bucks or not Barcardi. Just being open and honest with you! and before I drop myself deeper in the sh1t with my fellow US BM's, you can PM if you want, Cheers Barcardi Here endeth the rant, I need a little lie down now in a darkened room!

Like I said Barcardi I haven't seen any Western brickies here. Normally local guys being supervised by a Westerner maybe or currently Turks! The standards of workmanship are very, very poor though. 3000 quid a day! Tax free! Where do I learn bricklaying! The money is good, but not that good.

Heat yes, it rose to 55 degrees today at midday. Full body armour and a kevlar helmet, yes. I do see where you are coming from Barcardi, I am a bit further down the path to retiring after 18 months here, but I just haven't seen any Brits out here doing that kind of work!

I'm not sure what your skill-set is, but you might look into the world of IT. All over Asia, there is a shortage of fellows that are qualified to do the job. Finance is another area of expertise you might want to look into.

I'm sure you could get a job teaching English, but that won't pay much. I assume that you want to live in Phuket? I think that it would be harder to find a job there. BKK seems to have the greatest amounts of working Ex-Pats.

The best advice was already given: get a job at a big U.S. company and get them to send you there. Look into chemical, electronics and import companies.

Good luck.

That must have been a very long time ago Andy.
Visit the UAE now and it puts anywhere you care to mention that you may have been in the shade when it comes to modern architecture and ameneties.
The UAE is certainly not a 3rd world country,Teaching English is a VERY well paid job. Sorry mate you are totally wrong here, and quite insulting as well
But its an open forum and you are entitled to your opinion the same as all of us,so lets drop it.

I worked in Al Ain for a while with the local Police there and had a fantastic time. Great expat community all heading for Dubai at the weekend as Al Ain can be a bit quiet. Excellent standard of living over there and you need quite a good salary to keep your head above water IMHO.

Cool Accounting?

G'day guys,
Dont usually post here, just read the great gossip till I get back to Phuket in a month or so.
For Forex... perhaps accounting or finance lecturing could be an opportunity? Why?
Well Im a CPA here in Sydney and because Ive got construction, project management and general accounting/commercial background I was approached by the CPA society to consider helping out with post-Tsunami skillshortages in Thailand & Sri Lanka.
Apparently, and its the little things you dont consider, some 800+ lecturers/admin staff and finance discipline staff were either killed or have become unavailable for tertiary lecturing and general accounting related work in both countries.
Im giving it serious consideration myself, but it would be such a radical change for me and my career, I guess its the fear of the unknown....also my investments are here in OZ...probably more truthfully I dont know that I could control myself with the ladies.

IT jobs in Thailand are very hard to come by as a walk in. The only real way is to be tranferred there.
