People in Patong/Karon

Hello again...
As my evil plan unfolds, I came to think of an interesting question... What sort of people (other than locals, of course) live in Patong / Karon? I mean what nationalities have moved from wherever and over? I myself is Norwegian and 24 years old, and it would be nice to know what sort of people I will be spending time with (as I expect to meet people...).

I mean, age and nationality is interesting, maybe even a name. If people still want to stay anonymous, that's obviously perfectly fine.

Fredrick.

Right then. To rephrase - I know Geir is somewhat of a Norwegian name... Are there any Norwagians in Patong? Scandinavians? Brits?

Yes, but you will find problem to play in Patong. Forget about playing in internet -shops. It's not legal. And he connection is to slow in the hotelrooms.
When I visit Patong I normaly read one or two books on the subject. The last one was Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky. I can recomend it if you not already have read it.

I've been following the poker threads closely. And my dreams have been shot to hell. I'm presently pulling in about $1200-1400US per month from poker an hour or two every couple of nights. Thought it would be great to liquidate here and settle down and play a little poker and live quite comfortably. Don't really want to rely on illeagal activity to make my income though. If I was into that I could make a ton of money here.

Playing poker in LoS legally isn't the problem. As I've understood as long as it is online, it is not illegal (as you do it in "another" country). The problem is whether or not it can be done, with variable internet lines and such. I'd think that you would have to find an apartment with its own internetconnection, and having tried it out from the ISP before you move and put everything on the line. Btw, where do you play?

Usually Interpoker.

BTW, I have used interpoker successfully with only dial-up access @ 28kbs. Just find reading the forum while I play a bit slow.

i did put this up in an earlier post on a onther thread but here it's again, this is from phuketgazette.

Is online poker in Thailand illegal?
I am a professional poker player who travels a lot, but mostly I play poker online. I was thinking about living in Phuket from September to April as I have been visiting a lot since 1994 and really like the people and the climate.

This would not be possible if there was no way for me to play poker online from servers placed elsewhere in the world. Is it illegal to play online in Thailand?

Friday, July 22, 2005 Magnus Andeersson, Sweden.
“It is legal if you play online poker for entertainment only, but illegal under Thai law to play for even small amounts of money. Every online game played for money is illegal in Thailand. ”

Friday, July 22, 2005 Pol Maj Wacharin Jiratthitikarlwiwat, Phuket City Police Station.

http://www.phuketgazette.net/issuesanswers/details.asp?id=830
so as you can see it's illegal to play online poker if it's for money.

Is it da Gangees ?? No its Denial

Gambling or betting (any form of items or money) of any sort is illegal (it tops the arrest stats nearly every month).. Of course playing in a locked room over an encrypted connection its not likely to get caught but that doesnt mean its then legal.. Then again if someone wants to make a quick buck or has any jealousy issues or problems grassing you up to collect a percentage of the police fine is not unheard of..

Get your own connection (a good one) then lock your door and don't tell any one what you are doing. Then you sould be fine. But I think you should follow my first advice to do some reading and get some rest from poker while you are in LOS. I play 60-80hours online every week + one live tournament. I know how fresh and inspired I feel when I get back after a week or two off playing.

So what you're saying is that if you sit down in your apartment, enter empirepoker.com, playing for playmoney, then that's fine. But if you sit down in your apartment, enter empirepoker.com and play for $ 5, then you'll get arrested? Doesn't seem like there's any way they can tell the difference?

Anyway - it is illegal to do any sort of gambling (for cash) in Thailand, but how can they arrest you for playing on a site that offers playmoney (for entertainment purposes alone, of course) as well as real money? I mean - if someone knocks on your door, says "itz da POleez", then I guess you could just close the table and say "no, no - this is just for fun..."

Can't really see how they can uphold these laws, and if something were to happen, I guess you could always find a solution to the problem, don't you think? And when it comes to the statistics, that has to be actual physical "sitting in a room with two cards down, and 15k baht on the table with a cigar and a whisky" gambling. As I've understood, playing poker online isn't that uncommon - I'm sure that you know someone who does it.

I'd be quite interested to talk to those who do this, because I need to know how this works. If they want to, they can send me a mail explaining things...

Come on - it's not that hard

No offence guys, but as someone who is more interested in "poke her" than poker, wouldn't this thread be better suited to the Idle chit chat forum.

I can see that you are getting quite a few replies but feel that this thread has somehow wandered off a bit from the original topic.

I think it has all been pretty well spelled out for you in this thread. I can just see some silly little farang explaining to the mib at their front door, "oh no sir this is just for fun!!" You would be experiencing different accommodations for the night at least.

As I say, that's in public and therefore much more risky. I'd like to know what sort of gambling that makes it top arrests in Los...

Its if anyone grasses you...

They dont need evidence to make life a b1tch.. I know people they 'suspect' of crimes (drugs etc) and they were arrested put in jail.. Kept there for a few days (very unpleasant) found they had a immigration issue and deported with red stamp in passport (cant come back) all without ever going to his room, getting his posessions, sorting banks or anything out in his life.. They suspected something and made his life hell..

Now say you have a GF.. Say you break up with said GF and are on bad terms.. Say that GF feels like getting you in sh1t or getting a % of your fine.. She goes and talks with her mate the copper and you get a knock on the door..

You dont get your one phone call and 'due process' doesnt always apply.. This aint kansas anymore dorithy.. Etc.. How much are you willing to pay versus being put in the Phuket town prison with 100's of other inmates ?? Wevils in the rice, stinking toilet, etc etc etc.. Thats without the obvious 'dont drop the soap' issues of being the one white sweetmouth !!!

Am I saying this will happen.. Of course not.. Is it even likely.. I doubt it.. is it possible yes.. They know you would pay an awful lot to to make that not happen..

I know thai girls that seem to be card addicts.. One has been caught so many times its daft.. Someone hears about the game. Grasses them up and the police come and nab the 6 - 10 of them.. Couple of 1000 each fine and few 1000 to the grass.. Happens once a month in thier group..
