The server was down, I dont know exactly why and then the server have been doing fschk'ng the last few hours, I am happy it restored the harddisk and there was no big damage.

Also reminds me to spend my day tomorrow making backup and order a new backup account to start with daily backups with rsync.

I lost a forum like that, server going down. Can you imagine starting this forum again? All that history lost would be a disaster!

I don't think I would like want to be a member on a forum started by Imagine.

It was out here last night at 2:00 AM PDT.

I wrote a very long, very outrageous post. Two full pages, single-spaced on MS Word. When I went to copy and paste it in a post, I was unable to connect.

Now, in the light of day, I am thinking that perhaps it was a good thing the system went down. I think I got a bit too outrageous!!

Swedish corps. is pretty strict about the internet use, porn will probably mean dismissal very quickly and my old company I worked for have already done that a lot of times.

And back to topic...

I ordered a backup server today so I will soon be able to make backups automatically with rsync.

I am also currently downloading a backup of the forum database, 173Mb. (Attachments is outside the database).

So I can sleep better now...

I have above on my computer.

If this can be used as you do to cut and paste would
appreciate advice as to how you do it and then put on this forum.

Writing posts that fall over when submitting reply and then
are lost in a big black hole is driving me nuts.

Thanks

Thank you

Thank you very much Diz for the trouble you took.

There was not one thing in the reply that I already knew.

I believe you hit the nail on the head with me being timed out
as I tend to get sidetracked whilst writing posts.

I have printed out your post and am going to have a crack
at the copy and paste shortly.

Again

Thankyou

Strictly I should not access this forum through a hospital network though it's not blocked - it might be though if my traffic shows up on the sysop's radar. Bangkok Toinight and Patttaya Thumbs are blocked. To get around this I use my server in Germany which I access through a Remote Desktop encrypted link. The traffic does not pass unencrypted through hospital or university networks so no one knows what I'm up to. The surfing is also quicker because the server is on a high bandwidth commercial connection but viewing it via RD is sufficiently low bandwidth that even the Hospital net can cope easily.

Hi Bliss,

What I usually do is to start replying to a post, which at that point, I don't know taht I am going ot write a long answer. When I take too long thinking about it or writing so much, then I wonder if I am timed out. So, then I open up Microsoft word in a new window, do a cut and paste, using the "Control C, Control V" technique described by Dizbuster, to transfer my reply to the Microsoft Word window. Then I go back to the "Reply to Post" where I wrote my reply, and I hit submit. If it goes through, which it sometimes does, then I'm cool. But if it doesn't, then I can bring up Phuket-Info all over again, go to the thread, find the post, bring up the reply screen, the go back to Microsoft Word, highlight the reply, do Control C, go back to the reply box, do Control V, and I am good.

I used to lose a lot of posts before I learned this technique. Damn!! Is anything more frustrating than seeing a long post or letter disappear into cyberspace? One tip about the Control C/Control V Technique - hold down the control key firmly, and tap the Control C key with a stroke that is sure, but quick. For some reason, if you don't get the touch right, your post will vanish and you have defeated yourself. Of course, you could always use the Edit function, but Control C/Control V is very quick and easy, once you get the right touch!!

JayBee

P.S. A shortcut would be to highlight the reply, do control C, then hit submit reply. If you find you are timed out, then log in to Phuket-Info again, go to the thread, post, and then the reply window, then hit control V. That way you cut out the use of Microsoft Word. Of course, if you happen to make a mistake or inadvertently hit a wrong key, then you might lose the reply. But if you use the edit function instead of Control C/Control V, maybe that would make for a safer transfer with use of Microsoft Word. Basically, Control C picks up text and Control V drops the text into the window you have open. You can also use it to move parts of text around within the same window.
Have fun!!!!

Thanks for the tip, Diz!! For some reason, I never tried the preview post function. Duh! This might save me a lot of cutting and pasting. What happens, however, if you space out for awhile, not realizing how long you have been daydreaming(about scrumptious BGs), then you hit "preview post" and find that you have already been timed out? Can you then hit the back button, get back to your reply, and do a cut to paste when you log back in?
