Thailand pays for relatives...

Swedish newspaper reported today Thaksin said at a meeting yesterday in Phang nga that Thailand will pay for flights and hotel for all relatives of tsunami victims for the aniversary.

He also claimed Thailand paid for all costs, transportation of the dead to their native countries and hospital bills for all victims of tsunami.

Unfortuneately, Swedish government said they paid everything themselves. So Thaksin words caused confusion since it is not true.

I guess it depends on how he define relatives. Swedish government is actually planning this themselves to pay for relatives to visit Thailand, and said they got 700 applications. 25% of these isnt qualified (according to their rules) so maybe 500 people would come. Regardless Thaksin pay or not, and 500 isnt that many people.

This looks like a nice gesture (if true). The Thai government is under no obligation to do this, as it was a very infrequent natural disaster.

Without being cynical, could they be trying to find ways of showing tourists that things are back to normal?

Yes, this is ofcourse the main reason for Thaksin, it was mentioned in the Swedish article. But it is a good gesture anyway.
