PHUKET: Two early morning earthquakes, measuring 5.0 and 5.3 on the Richter Scale respectively, posed little danger to Phuket.
The Meteorological Department reported that the first earthquake was recorded at 6:22 am with the epicenter at 5.78ºN, 98.33ºE, about 260 kilometers from Phuket off the west coast of Satun Province.
The tremor was felt in both Phuket and Phang Nga Provinces, but there was no reported damage.
The second earthquake happened at 7:43 am. Its epicenter was off the northwest coast of Sumatra at 0.51ºN, 97.7ºE.

WOW ok...
I woke up in the night and thought I felt the bed shaking (no jokes).. then rolled over and went to sleep.. I woke up with this twice but didnt know if it was dreaming as I woke up groggy thinking 'did that just happen'..
First time I woke up.. Slept through one in Cali.. Slept through the Tsunami and the quake before it.. woke up this time !!!

Its allready calmed down.......I was awake at the moment and felt nothing.
There will be small earthquakes in the Sumatra-area for at least one more year, but its harmless compere to whats happen before.
So no need to worry about going to Phuket.

Geir, When I stayed at the third floor during tsunami earthquake it moved a lot, both me and Ead woked up and it was big movements. While Ead tried to look outside what was going on I just continued to sleep, to sleepy to think about it.

When I was on the third floor in the Banthai, I didn't feel a thing- but I think the Christmas day alcohol intake had a lot to do with that.

When were these earthquakes supposed to have occurred. I cant locate anything at the USGS website. There was a 5.7 quake in the Nias region at 6/9/05 18:00 (Thai time). Even this quake would have NO impact on Phuket.

I know, but there is nothing listed on the USGS website for that time frame, not too worry.

From Yesterday's Bangkok Post
Residents run for hills after earth tremor
Phangnga _ Residents in Takua Pa district ran for their lives yesterday morning, fearing tidal waves might strike again after a mild earthquake hit Indonesia's northern Sumatra. While sprinting to high ground, villagers cursed under their breath about a lack of a tsunami warning system.
In Ban Nam Khem fishing community, 200 people, mostly children and women, ran to Bang Muang tambon administration organisation when they felt the tremor.
Somnuek Kaewla-iad, 43, of Laem Pom beach, said she felt the house trembling some time after 6am and ran out to wake up the neighbours. The villagers headed for TAO Bang Muang.
Mrs Somnuek said she waited at the TAO office for almost three hours before going home. ''I went back after 9am because the kids were getting hungry. The whole village was quiet.
''I really don't know how long we have to run like this. It would be great to have a tsunami warning tower here,'' she said.
Mrs Somnuek said the government should pay more attention to villagers rather than focusing on tourist destinations.
Boontham Roopkham, another Laem Pom resident, said she was frightened, especially when she did not know for sure if the tidal waves would come.
''I want a warning tower as soon as possible. Without a warning system no tourists would come.''
Arthon Srisukkaew, another Laem Pom villager, said he did not understand why the government ignored villagers' calls for a warning system.
''Even in tourist spots, hotels aren't safe without a warning tower.''
Orawan Harntalay, of Thap Tawan village, said her neighbour called a disaster warning centre in Phuket before 7am but nobody answered. ''We don't know who we should contact in a situation like this.''
Ladda Thongdee, a school teacher in Bang Sak community, said a tsunami warning system is urgently needed as villagers currently rely on television or radio broadcasts only. A warning system would enable evacuation to safe places and reduce panic. ''These days when they hear about an earthquake, they just run in all directions.''

The problem is,
If you feel an earthquake, you do not know if the epicenter is near you and the quake is a little one (5.x) or if the quake is very far out at sea and you feel it because it's gigantic (9.x).
I am going to make it a point when I go to Phuket in November to stay in a hotel near or with an internet connection. If I feel an earthquake (I live in San Francisco so we feel them all the time) rather than run like a maniac I am going to immediately go here:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqs...uakes_all.html
And see what it says. It's usually very up to date, like up to the minute. If there's a earthquake off the coast of Thailand that is 5.0, I will go back to bed. If the one I felt is 8.3 off the coast of Sumatra, I'm going to run like hell. Pretty much that simple.

Yeah
Last year I stayed at the C&N hotel, right next door to an internet cafe. I was there two weeks before the Tsunami. I like to think that had it happened when I was there I would have done exactly that, and hopefully have been able to save some lives by running around and telling people. The problem was, the initial readings of the earthquake were not large enough. I would have been concerned enough to say "maybe there's a tsunami coming" but not in a proper panic, which is what I would have been in if I had learned from that page it was a 9.3 or whatever it turned out to be...
