Sony PSP
Hi Gents!
As i will be down in HKT mid Jan a friend of mine asked me if i can get him a Sony PSP. Im not into computer games but he told me its the same thing like the famous Gameboy. Now to my question. Is this PSP thing available down in HKT or bangers? He told i should be able to get it for him for less then 9000 baht plus copies of games for around 200 baht. Advice from some addicts would be highly appreciated!
thanks

I am getting one before I go to Los, Over here it is about 13,000bt, I'd say you would be able to pick one up for about 10,000bt over there though.
I would be interested to know also if anyone knows if and where they have the games on sale in Los for the PSP?

You need to be more clear on what you are trying to buy..
The basic value pack is going for 11k (and under now I am guessing) in games not dead by lotus tesco (also have a 1GB memory card which you prolly need for 4500 I am told).. Bangkok choulc be cheaper..
At first they were a lot cheaper here than uk (like 250 GBP and 12 - 13k) but now I dont know.. 9k ??? Perhaps if your lucky in MBK but it will be tight... Of course by Jan in the post christmas sales all this will be different..
Copy games.. not seen any yet.. Also it depends on the devices firmware if it can be hacked to play copy games (firmware flash like a mod chip) if I understand correctly..
I have not followed the PSP mod scene at all so I really dont know but I heard the early firmware could be hacked but loading any later official firmware onto it then locked it tight and sony cleverly released some hot titles that only ran on later firmware.. All this was stuff I skim read a couple of months back and may well have changed.. Tell him to find out exactly the score first online..
Anyway games not dead in Tesco is your best guy around here.. MBK better in BKK..

Pantip you should be able to get one for 9,500 Baht - The games are all available to download or purchase on CD, you just copy them to the memory card on the PSP. Great for watching movies etc... as well.
Most games only run off the memory card with a 1.5 OS, which you should be able to find fairly easily - if not, don't worry as they have a 'downgrader' available now that flashes your PSP to 1.5 from 2.0.

hi all!
first of all thanks for all the great info. since im not a computer whizz and cant be arsed with firmware and downgraders and modchips and what the heck during my holiday i will pass all the info you guys gave me to my friend which then has to write on to me what exactly he wants and i just buy it off mbk or tesco. everytime i go to asia its the same. all my friends go on my nerves and ask me to bring them electronic gadgets i never have heard of.
i rather stick with my golfclubs and play with my gamegirl during my stay in hkt...
thanks for all the info doh!

As far as I can tell the PSP has not been modded yet. The usual vendors certainly arent carrying any chips. I found this article if you are interested: http://www.psproms.com/psp_mod-chips.htm
Thats a good price for the value pack. I hadn't seen one for much less than $200 here, even when they are used.

hi!
a friend told me a modchip is not needed to run homebrew or counterfeit software on the console. its all done by a bug in a firmware. the firmware version has to be 1.50 to use this bug and play games of the memorystick. as far as i have read all new psp units are shipped with a new firmware 2.0 or even 2.01 which cant play software on the ms anymore. alldoh some days ago a "firmware-donwngrader" was released to the copy scene that allows to downgrade from verision 2.0 firmware to 1.50 again which makes it possible again to play games or homebrew.

I was sure I read though that Sony had released some 'must have' game(s) that only ran on later FW and included a FW updater with it, kind of a way of forcing inconvienince for copy gamers..
Any info on that ??

hi!
i think my mate is really into this whole thing. i asked him your question and he told me theres a homebrew application out that makes the psp bios think you have a version 2.00 firmware installed when really you use 1.50. you put this thing on the memorystick. fire it up. choose which version you want to emulate go back to your memorystick and run the game that you want. very nice indeed.
